2 Netherlands Embassy Klosterstrasse Berlin The new Dutch embassy is located in the Berlin-Mitte district, the earliest heart of the German capital, in-between the River Spree and the omnipresent TV tower on Alexanderplatz In 2005 OMA won the Mies van der Rohe Award for the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin: The jury felt that the embassy was a powerful reconceptualization of the notion of an embassy, a government agency, and a building block within a city OMA's refusal to either adapt to the city grid or create a monument, choosing instead to create a carefully formed fragment that leaves open the question of what the identity of a government or a country should be, was much appreciated It was also felt that the spiraling trajectory that winds its metal-clad way through the whole block while allowing carefully framed views of the neighbouring city, produced such a seductive series of spaces carried out with such a sophistication of materials and visual effects and so revealing of its context, that it should receive the prize Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Services engineer Cooperating designer Lighting designer Project manager Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside Huygen Elwako Inside Outside OVI, Washinton DC Royal Haskoning Lensvelt Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs MI_MOA 2

10 photo: René Rutgers photo: René Rutgers Exhibition hall of the German Historical Museum Unter den Linden Berlin The extension, which took four years to complete, is a sparkling addition to the city s skyline With its dramatic, glass-walled spiral staircase, the new wing stands in sharp contrast to its neighbors, the neoclassical Altes Museum and Neue Wache, built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel Pei called on specialists from across Europe to help construct his design: an Irish team built a special supporting framework; parts of the complex staircase were shaped in the Netherlands; he combined French limestone with North American granite and Finnish glass In an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit, Pei put his creation in context: "The architecture should seduce people to move through the whole building full of curiosity and pleasure I even want to tempt them to the top-most floor through ever more steps, new views" It s Pei s only project in Like the new glass cupola of Berlin s Reichstag by Norman Foster, the Pei wing is expected to attract tourists with its striking design Floor area/size m² photo: René Rutgers IM Pei German Historical Museum Daily 10 am - 6 pm The DHM will be closed 24 and 31 December 2008 rrutgers 10

11 Parkside Apartments Am Park Berlin The Parkside Apartments are so named due to their exclusive location directly on the Tiergarten park in the centre of Berlin The 10 storey apartment building forms the northern border of a new hotel, office and residential development, namely Beisheim Center on Potsdamer Platz The building accommodates 36 apartments The high degree of flexibility in the design of the floor plans - spanning traditional to flowing room concepts forms the basis for all apartments, as does the constant presence of the surrounding green space All apartments have balconettes and generous loggias The 9th-floor apartments are maisonettes, the upper floors of which provide access to the roof terrace with its far-reaching views over the Tiergarten park and the city of Berlin Public facilities such as cafes, restaurants and shops are located on the ground floor The main entrance to the apartment block is located in the centre of these facilities (text from website architects) Project is not public! 12 Stresemannstrasse Residential Building Stresemannstrasse Berlin This is one of Zaha Hadid's projects which was realized before she became famous It was built in The structure is a residential building with an acute-angled corner on the corner of Stresemannstrasse and Dessauer Strasse Hadid designed oblique wall constructions which were shifted towards each other The eight-storey building is cladded with bronze, which results in changing light reflections Project is not public! 1994 Zaha Hadid s pkrajewski_pl 12

14 Bauhaus archive Klingelhöferstraße Berlin The Bauhaus Archive or the Museum of Design in Berlin deals with the research and presentation of the history and impact of the Bauhaus ( ), the most important school of architecture, design, and art of the 20th century It is the most complete existing collection focused on the history of the school and all aspects of its work and is accessible to allthe museum building is a late work of Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus It was planned in 1964 for Darmstadt and was built in modified form in Berlin Today, its characteristic silhouette is one of Berlin's landmarks 1979 Walter Gropius pkrajewski_pl Wednesdays to Mondays, 10am - 5pm The museum is closed on Tuesdays On Tuesdays following public holidays the museum is open from 10am to 5pm Access by public transport: U-Bahn Nollendorfplatz Bus 100, M29, 187 und 106 Lützowplatz 14

17 French Embassy Pariser Platz Berlin The Embassy of France in Berlin is the diplomatic mission of the French Republic in Designed by Christian de Portzamparc and completed in 2002, it is at the same address, Pariser Platz 5, as the former embassy which was destroyed in World War II Prior to German reunification, France had an embassy in the German Democratic Republic at a different address and an embassy in the Federal Republic in Bonn photo: Nazar Leskiw 2002 Main designer, Christian de Portzamparc Steffen Lehmann Nazar 17

18 photo: Nazar Leskiw Friedrichstrasse Checkpoint Charlie Friedrichstraße Berlin The commission followed two competition entries OMA submitted to the Internationale Bauaustellung in 1981 The program includes 26 apartments which occur as three types: 1 Penthouses 2 Three floors of flats which are reached from a double-height gallery 3 Garden access maisonettes The apartments sit on a podium above the new checkpoint facilities for customs workers and Allied forces The building was completed shortly after the Berlin wall came down The site is in the baroque area of Friedrichstadt, which is now dominated by the architectural remains of the pre and postwar period, the Berlin wall and the Checkpoint (the East/West border crossing for non-residents) The project exploits the latent qualities of the site The building functions as a series of pavilions for border control which form a podium, with a 'Miethaus' on top photo: Nazar Leskiw 1990 OMA - Rem Koolhaas Nazar Take the Ubahn U2 or U6 either to Stadtmitte (and walk south along Friedrichstrasse) or to Kochstrasse (and walk north along Friedrichstrasse) The ground floor is open during shopping hours 18
