2 Potsdamer Platz Office and Commercial Building Potsdamer Platz Berlin The 18-storey building between Alte Potsdamer Strasse and the new city park was erected on a triangular shaped plot It is one of the three skyscrapers that form a gateway to Potsdamer Platz Like the Debis Tower, this building is faced with yellow-ocher terracotta bricks and glass elements The expressive roof over the main entrance and the glass corner construction which appears like the bow of a ship, are impressive (text from 'Berlin, New ure') Public access unknown! 2000 Client Hans Kollhoff Daimler Chrysler pkrajewski_pl 2

3 Stresemannstrasse Residential Building Stresemannstrasse Berlin This is one of Zaha Hadid's projects which was realized before she became famous It was built in The structure is a residential building with an acute-angled corner on the corner of Stresemannstrasse and Dessauer Strasse Hadid designed oblique wall constructions which were shifted towards each other The eight-storey building is cladded with bronze, which results in changing light reflections Project is not public! 1994 Zaha Hadid s pkrajewski_pl 3

6 Ku'damm Eck Augsburger Straße Berlin Ku'damm Eck is a corner building with a gradated and rounded façade festooned with an electronic billboard and sculptures by Markus Lüppertz 2001 GMP Architekten Nazar 6

7 Quartier 206 Friedrichstraße Berlin This project was proposed by the Berlin Senate to resuscitate the Friedrichstrasse, pre-war Berlin's main shopping street An international competition specified development of three city blocks with connecting links, or Passagen Ultimately it was deemed economically and politically judicious to award the individual blocks to different developer-architect teams This proposal was consequently redesigned in specific response to its new location on the central block, retaining only the organic connections of the original scheme with underground parking and a retail concourse stretched across all three blocks Floor area/size m² Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Nazar 7

8 Apartments in Südliche Friedrichstadt Kochstraße Berlin The perception and the connection with the urban space is the preamble of the designing process The main purpose consists in the lining up of the buildings along the lot's perimeter that set up the continuity with the old part of Berlin through the re-designing of Friedrichstasse The continuity of the external facade do not compromise the connection between externals and internals, guaranteed by tears and openings The plan follows a half court's design characterized by balconies in the internal facade The street view's front is mark by the apartment's loggias and curtain walls The flexibility, which rules the composition of the spaces, let the ground floor be useful for shops and boutiques Public access unknown! 1981 Aldo Rossi albiben 8

9 Friedrichstrasse Checkpoint Charlie Friedrichstraße Berlin The commission followed two competition entries OMA submitted to the Internationale Bauaustellung in 1981 The program includes 26 apartments which occur as three types: 1 Penthouses 2 Three floors of flats which are reached from a double-height gallery 3 Garden access maisonettes The apartments sit on a podium above the new checkpoint facilities for customs workers and Allied forces The building was completed shortly after the Berlin wall came down The site is in the baroque area of Friedrichstadt, which is now dominated by the architectural remains of the pre and postwar period, the Berlin wall and the Checkpoint (the East/West border crossing for non-residents) The project exploits the latent qualities of the site The building functions as a series of pavilions for border control which form a podium, with a 'Miethaus' on top 1990 OMA - Rem Koolhaas Nazar Take the Ubahn U2 or U6 either to Stadtmitte (and walk south along Friedrichstrasse) or to Kochstrasse (and walk north along Friedrichstrasse) The ground floor is open during shopping hours 9

10 Television tower Panoramastraße Berlin The Fernsehturm is a television tower in the city centre of Berlin, Close to Alexanderplatz, the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the former German Democratic Republic administration who intended it as a symbol of Berlin, which it remains today, as it is easily visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin With its height of 368 meters, it is the tallest structure in Hermann Henselmann Nazar 10

15 Paul Löbe Haus Paul-Löbe-Allee Berlin This building to the west of the river Spree is part of the 'government ribbon' It is connected to the Chancellery and together with the Marie-Elisabeth-Luders House on the opposite side of the Spree it forms a formal and functional whole The building contains more than 900 offices for the parliamentary deputies It's 200m long, 100m wide and 22m high It has the form of a double comb with eight outer courtyards The main entrance in the west is situated under a large imposing porch with four filigree columns A large glass-roofed hall with glass-enclosed elevators and transparent staircases are in the middle of the block The building is named after the last parliamentary president, until 1933, Paul Löbe (text from book 'Berlin-New ure') Public access unknown! 18 photo: João Sousa Centro Cultural de Belem Praça do Império Lisbon Portugal The Cultural Centre of Belém (CCB), located in the Belém quarter of Lisbon, is the largest building with cultural facilities in Portugal CCB includes very complex areas such as an auditorium for opera, ballet, symphony concerts and congresses, high security meeting halls, a library and a 7000 m² exhibition area Also located in the CCB is the Jacques Delors European Information Center The centre has m² of construction area and was prepared in a very short period ( ) The client of the project was the Portugese State through the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (State Agency for Culture) Completed in 1992, it occupies a total of m² and is the work of architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado; the interior was planned by Daciano Costa Floor area/size m² Main designer, Vittorio Gregotti Manuel Salgado Joao_Sousa The CCB is located right beside the famous 'Mosteiro dos Jerónimos' By tram: take the E15 Line to Belém 18
