2 The Schillerpark Settlement Barfusstraße Berlin n_berlin/en/weltkulturerbe/siedlungen/schillerparkshtml The Settlement was the first metropolitan housing project in Berlin during the Weimar Republic Taut's urban planning reflects modern Dutch architecture, particularly the work of Jakobus Johannes Pieter Oud His choice of materials also reflects the brick buildings of Amsterdam Colour as an element of design is predominantly restricted to the interior Instead, the design of the façades focuses on building materials and a spatial structure visible from the outside - such as a jamb floor without joints on which laundry facilities and drying rooms have been located A third flat, which juts out from the row of buildings with three flats per floor, provides for a particularly striking façade relief of the buildings that were constructed first Buildings erected at a later stage do not have this feature any more This reduction of shape, tending towards minimalism, not only reflects the contemporary architectural trend, but is also economically motivated From 2008 on the UNESCO List 1930 Main designer,, Urban planner Bruno Taut Max Taut 2

3 Hansaviertel Klopstockstraße Berlin The Hansaviertel is a small locality between the Tiergarten park and the Spree river within the central Mitte borough of Berlin It was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt from 1957 to 1961 as a housing estate project of international master architects like Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer etc, called Interbau 1957 (IBA 1957) The whole ensemble is now protected as a historic monument The quarter received its name for its streets named after Hansa cities, with the Hansaplatz in the centre This square contains a small shopping arcade, a library and the Grips-Theater The Hansaplatz subway station was already built in 1957, though the U9 line did not open before 1961 Some Gründerzeit buildings remained north of the Stadtbahn railway The Altonaer Straße, named after Altona, Hamburg, leads to the Victory Column Schloss Bellevue, the residence of the German President is nearby (text from Wikipedia) 1957 Main designer, Alvar Aalto Arne Jacobsen Egon Eiermann Godber Nissen Hans Scharoun Jacob Bakema Ludwig Lemmer Max Taut Oscar Niemeyer Pierre Vago Walter Gropius Werner Düttmann 3

4 photo: Timo Mecking photo: Timo Mecking Bauhaus Building Gropiusallee Dessau The Bauhaus Building is one of the most famous architectural monument of modern architecture Designed by Walter Gropius it was erected in only thirteen months to provide ideal working space for the Bauhaus, that had to move from Weimar to Dessau The Building itself is a manifestation of the Bauhaus design philosophy Three different wings are determined for school, workshop, students housing and administration purposes The buildings curtain wall glass façades and the fact that the façades show no front/ back hierarchy were a revelation at the very beginning of modern architecture In 1945 the building has been damaged by bombs and was reconstructed 1975/76 Since 1996 the Bauhaus building in Dessau is registered as a World Heritage site photo: Timo Mecking Walter Gropius timo_mecking Building is open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00 For further information about current exhibitions please check The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation provides guest rooms inside the historical student housing For more information about staying at the Bauhaus please call / Dessau is located in Saxony-Anhalt, between the cities of Leipzig (52 km south) and Magdeburg (65 km north) and can be reached by train or highway A9 4

6 The Snake Paulstrasse Berlin This big housing project of the German government in the city centre of Berlin is a residential building for government employees The original main building of 300 metres length was built according to plans by Georg Bumillers Its ground plan has the shape of a wavy, serpentine line, like the one made by a snake In addition to this complex with 718 apartments, the site contains four apartment blocks by Urs Müller, Rhode & Wandert and, in the western part, a brick building dating from 1934 Further buildings include a new gymnasium, a power plant and a children's day centre, designed by GKK Partners Public access unknown! 7 Chapel of Reconciliation Bernauer Straße Berlin This oval shaped building is located on the plot of land where the Protestant Reconciliation Church, dating from 1894, used to stand before it was blown up in 1985 It was located on the so-called 'death strip' of the Berlin Wall The loam community building, which contains an organ loft and a single upper window, has an ambulatory added to the front Its façade is dominated by a lamella wall In the back part of the ambulatory, the foundation walls of the predecessing building are visible through a small opening in the ground The chapel's bells hang in the separate bellcote on Bernauer Strasse 2000 Reitermann and Sassenroth Tuesday - Sunday: / Divine Service: Sunday 1000 / Devotion and prayer: Monday + Saturday 0730; Friday 1800; Saturday
