2 Transformer Station Thaerstrasse Berlin This transformer station in Berlin is part of a block concept with the switchyard from the Bewag on Eldenaer street Openings in the monolithic structure permit a view into the interior Despite the fact that the building has got a very distinct shape and colour, it relates to the height and proportions of its neighbouring buildings Project is not public! 1999 AssmannSalomon pkrajewski_pl 2

3 photo: Anna Armstrong photo: Anna Armstrong Unité d'habitation Berlin Flatowallee Berlin Le Corbusier designed several variations of the Unité d Habitation, the most famous of which is in Marseille, France All were derived from Le Corbusier s visionary 1922 city plan, known as Ville Contemporaine The plan envisioned massive residential blocks set in open green areas towers in parks, bringing light and air to the residents of urban housing The Unité type was most notable for its creation of internal streets and accommodation of social and communal functions: kindergartens, medical facilities, recreational spaces, all within the housing block The Berlin Unité lacks most of the amenities (save a shop and a post office on the ground floor), but is considered unique for its more generously-sized apartments It accommodates 530 units on 17 floors The internal streets here are oppressive, windowless corridors Still, the building is in quite good condition; its hilltop setting, iconic formal qualities, and polychromatic façades are very striking (text from Galinskycom) Public access unknown! 1957 Le Corbusier jeooren photo: Anna Armstrong 3

4 photo: Maarten Thewissen photo: Stefan Müller Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 1/ Berlin The Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum is the new central library of Humboldt University, located on the famous old boulevard Unter den Linden, near Museum Island and Brandenburg Gate It's the biggest freehand library in and contains 2 million books, all of them public accessible and not in closed depots Berlin-based Swiss architect Max Dudler won the competition, in which 277 architects participated, with a typical 'Berlin style' rationalist building Behind a strictly orthogonal façade, the visitor encounters the big reading hall, which refers to the terraces of the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis The space is illuminated by natural roof light and contains green desks and lamps with stone covers for 250 people, all designed by the architect The atmosphere of the hall breathes a similar spirit as the big library hall by Labrouste in Paris Most of the 1250 workstations are located directly at the façade with tremendous views over the city photo: Stefan Müller 2009 Max Dudler TicketB Monday - Friday: Saturday & Sunday: S-Bahn: Friedrichstraße Visits for groups can be booked by wwwticket-bde 4

7 Humboldt-Box Schlossplatz Berlin The Humboldt-Box adds to the importance of the Museum Island in Berlin and enriches Berlin with another attraction Designed by a trio of architects - Krueger, Schuberth and Vandreike - the Humboldt-Box radiates a futuristic ease amidst the historic buildings in Berlin's centre Its architecture is to reflect the idea of temporariness With a stipulated period of eight years, presumably until 2019, it holds a temporary, exciting spot advertising in an innovative way the future Humboldt-Forum Berlin - as well as being an actual trademark for Berlin 2011 KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike pkrajewski_pl Monday to Sunday: 10:00-20:00 h 7

10 Hamburger Hof Grosse Hamburger Strasse Berlin The Hamburger Hof complex presents itself today as a terrain genuinely grown and constantly re-combined by means of residential and commercial buildings over the last 200 year The only completely new building within the ensemble is a five-story construction abutting an existing fire wall On the top floor it protrudes widely into the retral adjacent park, while at the corner of the neighboring brick house shifting onto the old coffee roastery in respectful distance New fenestrations on the upper floors of the complex offer spectacular views onto this "pocket park" and the surrounding houses, while the historic courtyard is recast by the new layout explicitly implementing modern materials and shapes and yet retaining its vintage character as a semi-private space 2010, Interior architect NPS Tchoban Voss pkrajewski_pl 10

11 Memorial Visitors Center Bernauer Straße Berlin At the Visitors Center located near the Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station you'll find information about everything the Berlin Wall Memorial has to offer You can also get an overview of the entire memorial grounds and receive information about other Berlin Wall sites in the city On the Visitor Center?s upper level, two short films are shown about the history of the Berlin Wall and the border system Many different special events are also held in the rooms on this level There is a specialized bookstore on the ground floor with literature about the history of the Berlin Wall and the division of Visitor terminals allow you to look up information about other Wall sites in Berlin and along the former Iron Curtain 2011 Mola + Winkelmüller pkrajewski_pl 11

12 photo: SPEECH photo: SPEECH Tchoban Foundation - Museum for ural Drawing Christinenstraße 18a Berlin The building is set on the Pfefferberg, the premises of a former brewery, located at Christinenstraße 18 in Prenzlauer Berg in the Berlin district of Pankow The new museum building, designed by SPEECH in Moscow, operated by the architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergei Kuznetsov, is conceived as a part of the "Pfefferberg" complex as a whole, and was not erected on an individually defined parcel of land The five-story building, executed in solid construction with basement, rises above a rectangular plan The building generates the impression of being constructed of drawings imprinted on the outer façade, at the same time resembling a stack of storage shelves The building's exposed concrete shell takes the form of a monolithic, windowless volume without joints With the exception of the topmost level, the entire structure is covered in reliefs generated by means of matrix formwork photo: SPEECH SPEECH OscarB, Mon - Fri: 2-7 pm, Sat & Sun: 1-5 pm 12
