Jewish Museum Berlin Glass Courtyard Lindenstrasse Berlin This addition to the Jewish Museum in Berlin is located in the courtyard of the original building, which was built in 1735 The new building is inspired by the Sukkah huts that are used for gatherings during the Jewish festival of Sukkot The extension has a transparent glass roof and curtain walls that offer unobstructed views of the garden In the summer, sliding doors can be opened along the lower front elevation to transform the courtyard into an outdoor space Studio Daniel Libeskind worked together with Matthias Reese of Reese Architekten to complete the project (text from website architect) Floor area/size m² Associate architect Client Daniel Libeskind Matthias Reese Jewish Museum Berlin pkrajewski_pl Monday: Tuesday - Sunday: Admittance will be granted until 1900 Tuesdays - Sundays, 2100 on Mondays 4
photo: Christian Beirle González photo: Christian Beirle González Berliner Congress Center Alexanderstraße Berlin In , the Haus des Lehrers ('House of Teachers') was built on Alexanderplatz, together with the accompanying Kongresshalle ('Congress Hall') Hermann Henselmann chose a box form for the 12-storey building, which was a typical solution for post-war, modern skyscraper architecture Influenced by contemporary Mexican murals, the building was given a monumental, multicoloured frieze by Walter Womacka The Congress Hall (now known as the bcc / Berliner Congress Center) is striking for its transparency, clear forms and many interesting architectural details The shiny aluminium dome can be seen from far away A wide view of the cityscape opens out from the foyer The combination of the bcc and the neighbouring House of Teachers forms a tense architectural ensemble on Alexanderplatz Berlin-based architect Kerk-Oliver Dahm has refurbished and modernized the building in 2004 (text from project's website) photo: Christian Beirle González Project is not public! 6 photo: Jens Ziehe photo: Jens Ziehe Jewish Museum Berlin Lindenstraße Berlin It is "like other museums, with white walls where pictures can be hung and objects exhibited" (Daniel Libeskind, 2000) The Jewish Museum Berlin is one of the most spectacular museum buildings in Since the beginning it has been a magnet for the public, attracting 350,000 people even as an empty shell before it opened in fall 2001 The architecture was undoubtedly the cause for this initial popularity Numerous views and opinions have been expressed on the Jewish Museum Berlin Whether visitors see Libeskind's new building as a "spectacular" or a "normal" museum, a deconstructivist masterpiece, a ground breaking creation, intellectuality in the form of a house, or even an exhibit in its own right? the architect placed great emphasis on people's perceptions of the building and these are formed anew day after day Floor area/size m² Client Daniel Libeskind Stiftung Juedisches Museum Berlin NiER photo: Wojtek Gurak Monday from 10 am to 10 pm Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm Admittance will be granted until 7 pm Tuesdays-Sundays, 9 pm on Mondays Take the subway: U1, U6 Hallesches Tor; U6 Kochstraße Or the Bus: M29, M41,

Hansaviertel Klopstockstraße Berlin The Hansaviertel is a small locality between the Tiergarten park and the Spree river within the central Mitte borough of Berlin It was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt from 1957 to 1961 as a housing estate project of international master architects like Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer etc, called Interbau 1957 (IBA 1957) The whole ensemble is now protected as a historic monument The quarter received its name for its streets named after Hansa cities, with the Hansaplatz in the centre This square contains a small shopping arcade, a library and the Grips-Theater The Hansaplatz subway station was already built in 1957, though the U9 line did not open before 1961 Some Gründerzeit buildings remained north of the Stadtbahn railway The Altonaer Straße, named after Altona, Hamburg, leads to the Victory Column Schloss Bellevue, the residence of the German President is nearby (text from Wikipedia) 1957 Main designer, Alvar Aalto Arne Jacobsen Egon Eiermann Godber Nissen Hans Scharoun Jacob Bakema Ludwig Lemmer Max Taut Oscar Niemeyer Pierre Vago Walter Gropius Werner Düttmann pkrajewski_pl 11

photo: Thomas Bögl photo: Nazar Leskiw Quartier Schützenstrasse Schützenstrasse Berlin Quartier Schützenstrasse consists of a classical Friedrichstadt block defined by the Schützenstrasse, Markgrafenstrasse, Zimmerstrasse, and Charlottenstrasse Aldo Rossi s used the historical urban structure of the division of land into small plots as his concept for Quartier Schützenstrasse The individualized houses signal individual plots but the total number of façades exceeds the number of houses standing independently of each other While two of the buildings are reserved exclusively for residential apartments the rest provide for a mixture of residential and commercial use The plan, inspired by the building blocks of 19th century Berlin, is organized around two large and two small interior courtyards that fill the block with light The Quartier Schützenstrasse is a collage of icons and archetypes with several obvious references to other Rossi buildings as well as historical references (text from wwwarcspacecom) photo: Nazar Leskiw Public access unknown! 1998 Aldo Rossi Thomas_Boegl 13
photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Ludwig Erhaud Haus Fasanenstrasse Berlin The Ludwig Erhard Haus is a unusual and futuristic building located in the borough of Charlottenburg The long building complex which consists of three main parts is connected with atria made of glass The spectacular look of the building - fifteen tremendous arches create the building's signature ribbed structure - which is called "Gürteltier" (armadillo) is characterized by the combination of glass and steel The individual hung-from-arches form was derived from a logical exploration of how to enclose the maximum possible building volume, while following Berlin's very prescriptive building regulations to the letter Traditional parapets set 22m above the local streets govern the height of any new structures in the district, while the desks of workers in prime office accommodation have to be within 7m of a naturally lit window The elliptical rib cage structure enabled the building to meet the regulations, while creating a distinctive and very open public area at its heart photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Client Grimshaw Berlin Chamber of Commerce dirkverwoerd S-Bahn: Zoologischer Garten (S3, S5, S7, S75) U-Bahn: Zoologischer Garten (U2, U9) Bus: M46, X9, X10, X34, 100,109,110, 200, 204, 245, 249 Regionalexpress: Zoologischer Garten RE1, RE2, RE7, RB

photo: Nazar Leskiw Friedrichstrasse Checkpoint Charlie Friedrichstraße Berlin The commission followed two competition entries OMA submitted to the Internationale Bauaustellung in 1981 The program includes 26 apartments which occur as three types: 1 Penthouses 2 Three floors of flats which are reached from a double-height gallery 3 Garden access maisonettes The apartments sit on a podium above the new checkpoint facilities for customs workers and Allied forces The building was completed shortly after the Berlin wall came down The site is in the baroque area of Friedrichstadt, which is now dominated by the architectural remains of the pre and postwar period, the Berlin wall and the Checkpoint (the East/West border crossing for non-residents) The project exploits the latent qualities of the site The building functions as a series of pavilions for border control which form a podium, with a 'Miethaus' on top photo: Nazar Leskiw 1990 OMA - Rem Koolhaas Nazar Take the Ubahn U2 or U6 either to Stadtmitte (and walk south along Friedrichstrasse) or to Kochstrasse (and walk north along Friedrichstrasse) The ground floor is open during shopping hours 18
Mies van der Rohe Haus Oberseestraße Berlin This small and unassuming house on the shores of Lake Obersee is the last building designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe before his emigration to the USA After the War it was used by the Soviet army as a garage and later as a wash-house In 1977, East Berlin authorities declared it a historic monument In 1998, artist Günter Uecker installed an exhibition depicting the changes undergone by the house over the years Besides this permanent exhibition, the museum also shows temporary exhibitions of contemporary art (text from Home & Abroad) 1932 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe pkrajewski_pl Tuesday - Thursday: / Saturday & Sunday:
photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Galeries Lafayette Friedrichstrasse Berlin Known for his slick surfaces and shining facades, French architect Jean Nouvel has combined transparent and translucent surfaces in this department store, and so creates an unforgettable shopping experience on the corner of the Friedrichstrasse and Franzosischestrasse Once Berlin s fanciest shopping street Several glass cone-shaped volumes dominate the interior The main cone rises several stories upwards from street level to the top of the building A second, smaller, inverted cone drops from street level past two shopping levels and two parking levels underground Check out the satellite images on the map, to see the amount of cones in this building from above Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Client Jean Nouvel Arup Euro Projekt Entwicklungs GMBH NGHM photo: Naomi Schiphorst Monday - Saturday open, from 10 to 20:00 hr The building is block 207, between Franzosische Strasse and Mohrenstrasse Take the U-bahn to the Franzosische Strasse 20
photo: Jörg von Bruchhausen photo: Jörg von Bruchhausen Am Kupfergraben 10 Am Kupfergraben 10 D Berlin Here on the Kupfergraben canal the intention was to build a modern building which incorporates, but doesn t replicate the past As an urban repair, the new building occupies the footprint of the preceding building (destroyed in the war), while at the same time developing a sculptural quality The façades are composed of brick masonry on reconstituted stone consoles with no visible expansion joints While solid, age-resistant materials characterise the exterior, the interior is defined by daylight and proportion Throughout the 4 storeys the floor plan varies depending on the formation of the volume and the window openings The gallery spaces are lit from the side, and interior folding shutters make it possible to reduce the amount of daylight In contrast to a museum, the intention is to create good spaces, where one can live, work, or show art - in a townhouse dedicated to the arts, where it is not isolated from the world, but directly related to the cultural heart of the city Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Structural engineer Services engineer Services engineer Client David Chipperfield s Dreßler Bau Ingenieurgruppe Bauen JMP Ingenieurgesellschaft KMS Beratungs- und Planungsgesellschaft Celine and Heiner Bastian David_Chipperfield photo: Christian Richters Tuesday - Friday 11 am 6 pm Saturday 11 am 4 pm The gallery is closed between Christmas and New Year's Day The gallery is directly opposite of Berlin s Museum Island Take the U/S-bahn to Friedrichstrasse or the S-bahn to Hackescher Markt 21
photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Sony Center Potsdamer Platz Berlin In the reconstruction of Berlin, Sony Center stands for a new technical vision and order It is not a building, but a part of the city The spatial dynamics and variety is contrasted by a minimal and technological attitude Light, both natural and artificial, is the essence of the design Sony Center is luminous, not illuminated Façades and roof act as a fabric which moderates the natural and artificial light They become a screen With its characteristics of transparency, permeability to light, reflection and refraction, there is a constant change of images and effects during day and night Sony Center is a group of buildings for the new age of entertainment There is a serious effort for tailoring an architecture to the stimulating contemporary confusion of private and public space (s statement) photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Client Murphy-Jahn Tishman Speyer Gmbh MVar By Bus and Train: Potsdamer Platz Subway Station (Line U2); Potsdamer Platz Elevated Train (S-Bahn) Station (Lines S1/S2/S25/S26); Bus Lines 148/200/248/348/N5/N52 By Car: A100, A113, A114; Underground parking garage entrance at Ben-Gurion-Straße and Bellevuestraße 22
photo: Brighdino photo: João Sousa Wohnhaus Schlesisches Tor Schlesische Straße Berlin International recognition came to Siza in 1980 with his design of the Schlesisches Tor (Bonjour Tristesse), a large public housing block in Berlin Many have read this project, Siza's first to be built abroad, as the embodiment of the "contextual" qualities of his architecture, seeing proof of Siza's trademark sensitivity to his surroundings in the rhythms of the windows, in the apartment block's evocation of the street's curve, and in the slit between the new and old buildings I prefer to see it as a mirror of the melancholia of urban life Now known by the name Bonjour Tristesse scrawled clandestinely on its facade, the Schlesisches Tor - with its outer wall of identically sized windows - is animated only by the abstract evocation of a horizontal line, broken by a small dip as the building encounters the sky - ruefully reminds us that architecture is not, after all, always a joyful reflection of contemporary living Project is not public! 25 Netherlands Embassy Klosterstrasse Berlin The new Dutch embassy is located in the Berlin-Mitte district, the earliest heart of the German capital, in-between the River Spree and the omnipresent TV tower on Alexanderplatz In 2005 OMA won the Mies van der Rohe Award for the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin: The jury felt that the embassy was a powerful reconceptualization of the notion of an embassy, a government agency, and a building block within a city OMA's refusal to either adapt to the city grid or create a monument, choosing instead to create a carefully formed fragment that leaves open the question of what the identity of a government or a country should be, was much appreciated It was also felt that the spiraling trajectory that winds its metal-clad way through the whole block while allowing carefully framed views of the neighbouring city, produced such a seductive series of spaces carried out with such a sophistication of materials and visual effects and so revealing of its context, that it should receive the prize Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Services engineer Cooperating designer Lighting designer Project manager Supplier Client OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside Huygen Elwako Inside Outside OVI, Washinton DC Royal Haskoning Lensvelt Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs MI_MOA 25
