The London Eye Belvedere Road SE1 7PB London In 1993, a competition was held in the UK for ways of celebrating the year 2000 The jury considered that non of the entries were good enough Having entered, Marks Barfield were undeterred by not winning, and decided to persevere with their proposal, finding the site, sponsors and finance and so on The wheel is 135m tall and has 32 air conditioned capsules around its rim Each capsule is powered, rather relying on gravity, to maintain it in the correct attitude on each 30 minute revolution The speed of rotation is slow enough to allow passengers to safely embark and dis-embark at ground level with out the wheel having to stop Richard Rogers has said that: "the Eye has done for London what the Eiffel Tower did for Paris" Like the Eiffel Tower, the Eye was intended to be a temporary structure, but it has proved so popular with the public (having carried 85m passengers by July 2002) that its future as a permanent feature looks assured 1999 Infrastructure consultant Landscape designer Services engineer Technical engineer Lighting designer Marks Barfield s Atelier One Beckett Rankine Partnership Dewhurst Macfarlane Edward Hutchison Loren Butt Consultancies Ove Arup Tony Gee & Partners Yann Kerslake AIK The London Eye Company davidb vary Please check via the website: wwwlondoneyecom Please check via the website: wwwlondoneyecom/ Please note that there are some variations in the address due to the fact that the London Eye is on a riverside footpath, that doesn't have house or building numbers, rather than a road However the post code is correct 5
photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Millenium Bridge Pauls Walk 1 EC4V London This is the first pedestrian rivercrossing in central London for more than a century A shallow suspension links Bankside with the City This winning entry of a competition organized in 1996 was an innovative "blade of light" from Arup, Foster & Partners and Sir Anthony Caro Unexpected lateral vibration (resonant structural response) caused the bridge to be closed for modifications The movements were produced by the sheer numbers of pedestrians (90,000 in the first day, with up to 2,000 on the bridge at any one time) Attempts were made to limit the people crossing the bridge: this led to long queues, but dampened neither public enthusiasm, nor the vibrations themselves The closure only 3 days after opening attracted public criticism Solved by installing dampers under and between the deck and the river piers; excellent, as it does not impact the aesthetics Linking the 2 major tourist attractions of St Paul's Cathedral and the fabulous Tate Modern, the bridge is well worth a visit photo: Ruth L Foster & Partners ARUP City of London boeboe 24/7 The Millennium Bridge connects two landmarks in London - St Paul's Cathedral (next to St Paul's London Underground station) designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century, and Herzog & de Meuron's Tate Modern gallery The nearest underground stations are Blackfriars or Mansion House, both on the Circle line and District line The nearest mainline station is Blackfriars This is one of those cliché-projects: 'you can't miss it' 6
photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens The Big Blue 2000 Canada Square 10 E1 4 London Situated in Canada Square, this was designed both as the skylight of the shopping mall below and as a sculptural image above ground, especially when the blue lights around it reflect off the curved under-surface Many of the locals refer to it as the "Flying Saucer" The Big Blue is a huge, asymmetric glass fibre object which rests on a ring of structural glazing, making it appear as if it were floating above the ground Its bold sci-fi looks are typical of the vitality Arad brings to all his commissions and exemplifies the way in which he has made the avant-garde accessible photo: Marieke Mannens 1998 Landscape architect, Interior architect Ron Arad Marieke_Mannens Canary Wharf Group 24/7 situated in public space London Underground Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf River Travel from the Embankment to Canary Wharf throughout the day Parking: Follow signs for Cabot Square or Canada Square car parks Cabot Square is accessed from the lower level of Westferry Circus roundabout 7
Albion Riverside Hester Road SW11 4AJ London A mixed use development sitting on the South bank of the Thames immediately adjacent to Foster & Partners' offices Eleven storeys high, the upper floors contain private apartments, varying in size from one to four bedrooms, arranged around four vertical circulation cores A typical floor holds approximately 27 units The top floors contain duplex apartments, nestled under the roof In plan the footprint of the scheme is an asymmetrical crescent, forming a piazza between its arms The riverside elevation is dominated by a continuous, sinuous line of extended floor plates, forming balconies, finished with glass balustrades Set back from this edge, is the faceted line of glazing In contrast the outer façade is one sweeping partial torus, or two dimensional curve, of aluminium tubes, the lines of which are disturbed by openings for windows and balconies This elevation seems to rest on dramatic double height "vee" shaped columns The whole project is executed with typical F&P panache Project is not public! 2003 Foster & Partners Hutchison Whampoa Property davidb The nearest tube station is Sloane Square (Circle and District Lines) but this is quite a walk away Bus numbers 19, 49, 239, 319 and 345 all pass the site 8
Waterloo International Mepham Street SE1 7ND London Waterloo International was built as a temporary measure to serve as the UK terminus of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, whilst the high speed route into St Pancras was being constructed The train shed sits on a concrete viaduct, four storeys high, with the Eurostar trains rubbing shoulders with their slower counterparts on the upper level The steel and glass train shed enclosure is impressive, in having to accommodate a snaking, tapering footprint, the dynamic loads of the moving trains, and an asymmetric section, yet still use rectangular panes of glass It is long - 35 bays - but only has a maximum span of 485m, reducing to 327m The lowest, basement, level serves as a car park The ground floor is for arriving passengers who, having passed through customs, can step out to a taxi rank, whilst a mezzanine level handles departures Sadly, the terminus was abandoned in 2009, when services were diverted into St Pancras and has yet to find an alternative use 1993 Contractor Building costs consultant Lighting designer Technical engineer Services engineer Grimshaw Anthony Hunt Associates Bovis Construction British Rail Network Civil Engineer Cass Hayward & Partners Davis Langdon & Everest Lighting Design Partnership Ove Arup and Partners Roger Preston & Partners Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners Tony Gee & Partners British Railways Board - European Passenger Services davidb Waterloo station is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Unfortunately, due to Waterloo International being un-used, it is not accessible to the public, but it can be seen from the concourse and outside the station in places such as Yorke Road and Leake Street However it is occasionally used for special purposes and occasions at which times the public may enter Waterloo International lies on the west side of Waterloo station on the side of the river Thames Waterloo is served by three tube/underground lines - Jubilee, Northern (Charing Cross Branch) and Bakerloo, and lies in fare zone 1 9
The O2 Peninsula Square SE10 0DX London The Dome (as it was initially known) was commissioned by the British Government to commemorate the year 2000 It attracted immense media criticism, chiefly because of its cost, however this was mainly due to the expense of the exhibition inside; the building itself was well under budget The statistics are impressive The structure encloses over 2 million cubic metres of space, being 365m in diameter and 50m high with a circumference of 10 km The teflon coated glass fibre fabric envelope is suspended from twelve towers, each 100m tall, by more than 70km of cables Internally, the environment is maintained by twelve externally located service towers The Millennium exhibition was visited by over 6m people during 2000 Afterwards the interior was stripped-out, and the project lay unused for several years before being converted into the O2 arena, becoming one of London's leading music and entertainment venues 1999 Technical engineer Sustainability consultant Landscape designer Landscape designer Building costs consultant Contractor Acoustics consultant Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Atkins Battle McCarthy Bernard Ede Buro Happold Desvigne & Dalnoky GA Hanscombe Partnership McAlpine / Laing Sandy Brown Associates The New Millennium Experience Company davidb The O2 is immediately adjacent North Greenwich tube station on the Jubilee Line Upon reaching the surface, at the top of the escalators, turn through 180 degrees and you can't miss it! 10
photo: Nazar Leskiw Moorhouse Moorgate 117 EC2Y 5ET London This is a massive building which tries hard to disguise the fact There are a few slab blocks in the vicinity of similar height, but nothing has quite the same bulk Quadrant-shaped in plan and section, its form seems to mutate as one moves around it From some standpoints it is huge, and from others it is less so It dominates the view along parts of London Wall from the east 16 floors of rentable floor space and a penthouse plant floor sit above a two-storey base podium - all accessed via a central core Whilst many would state that it is far from the practice's best work, it is, nevertheless, executed with the usual mastery that one expects from Foster & Partners Junctions and details which lesser architects would struggle with, are handled here the practice's usual panache; lifting the building above the mundane Project is not public! 12 photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak London Metropolitan University Graduate Centre Holloway Road N7 8DB London Created as a gateway to the "Graduate Student Centre for the London Metropolitan University" the building also acts as a community space The result is a very "Libeskind-like" form which animates a rather dull and grey part of northern London Public access unknown! 2004 Daniel Libeskind London Metropolitan University stefan_tuchila photo: Wojtek Gurak tube, Holloway road station 12
photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Nazar Leskiw Tate Modern Bankside Jetty SE1 9TG London The former Bankside power station consists of a huge turbine hall, a thirty-five m high and 152 m long entrance area with ramped access, as well as a display space for very large sculptural projects Parallel to it the boiler house, where now the galleries are housed Above the original roofline of the power station the then relatively little known Swiss architects added a two-storey glass penthouse; the lightbeam This houses a café-restaurant with stunning views of the river and the City, and the lower a membersroom with terraces on both sides of the building The chimney was capped by a coloured light feature designed by the artist Michael Craig-Martin, known as the Swiss Light The redevelopment of the redundant Bankside Power Station is a key to the regeneration of the area Tate Modern is the national gallery of international modern art Located in London, it is one of the family of 4 Tate galleries which display selections from the Tate Collection photo: Naomi Schiphorst 2000 Artist Herzog and De Meuron Michael Craig-Martin Tate boeboe Sunday Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Last admission into exhibitions 1715 (Friday and Saturday 2115) Ticket desks close at this time Tate Modern is located on the south bank of the River Thames at Bankside, near Blackfriars Bridge, opposite St Paul's Cathedral and next to the Globe Theatre By boat: Tate boat runs every forty minutes along the Thames between Tate Britain, the London Eye and Tate Modern By Underground: Southwark (Jubilee Line) and Blackfriars (District and Circle Lines) are the closest underground stations both of which are approximately ten minutes walk away Bus: RV1, 45, 63, 100, 381,
Cannon Place Cannon Street 78 EC4N 6HL London Like Bush Lane House next door, Cannon Place is severely restricted on where it can place its foundations Not only does the site sit over an existing underground station, but above this is a main line over-ground station serving 27m passengers a year Sandwiched between the two lie the ruins of the Roman Governor's Palace - a scheduled ancient monument Foggo Associate's solution, inspired by the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland, was to place three 32m deep cross-braced rectangular trusses along each of the two long sides of the site, in an ABABA rhythm These six trusses, each weighing over 200 tonnes, rest on four perimeter thrust blocks; the only points where load is transfered to the ground Consequently the four end trusses each cantilever some 20m Transversely linking the trusses together are a series of six 32m deep vierendeel like beams (the outer two are cable-stayed) from which all the floor plates - each the size of 26 tennis courts - are hung Project is not public! 15 Royal Victoria Dock Bridge Royal Victoria Dock E16 1XL London This bridge was commissioned to provide a strategic pedestrian link across the dock, which was originally built between 1850 and 1855 and is 15km long As part of the renaissance of London's docklands, the Royal Victoria Dock was designated as a centre for sailing and rowing Therefore any bridge had to provide the necessary clearance for recreational sailing vessels to pass underneath This design (a competition win in 1996) was originally intended to be a transporter bridge, featuring a gondola - or moving platform, slung beneath the main deck, but to date this has not been installed Pedestrians can alternatively use lifts or stairs to reach the main deck, which sits 15 metres above the water The main span is 130m long and is designed as a cable-stayed fink truss 1998 Building costs consultant Services engineer Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands Davis Langdon & Everest Jacobs Engineering Techniker davidb Use Custom House station (for Excel West) on the Docklands Light Railway From here there is a pedestrian route to the bridge, past the front entrance of Excel Use of the bridge is free 15
photo: Richard Davies photo: Richard Davies Floating Bridge N Colonnade Tower Hamlets London The bridge links two areas of very different scale On the one side a vast commercial development and on the other the more delicate proportions of 19th century warehouses and a quayside piazza By creating a low floating structure emphasis is placed on the horizontal stretch of water rather than the vertical dominance of Canary Wharf The slender form of the bridge is evocative of a brightly coloured insect touching the water as lightly as a water skater, offering pedestrians a sense of freedom as they cross Colour is central to the concept like a laser beam of light the bridge skims the dock with a piercing lime green line, the sense of perspective exaggerated by the tapering plan of the deck photo: Richard Davies 1996 Lighting designer Future Systems Anthony Hunt Associates Lighting Design Partnership Littlehampton Welding London Docklands Development Corporation Take the subway to Canary Wharf or to the West India Quay The Bridge is in-between the West India dock road (on the north side) and the North Colonnade at Cabot square (south end) 16
Great Court of the British Museum Great Russell Street WC1B 3DG London The Great Court originally "evolved", over many decades, into the book store for the British Library, with Robert Smirke's famous circular reading room (not quite) in the centre With the completion of the new British Library in Euston in 1998, the books were moved out and the space became available for re-development Foster & Partners won the competition to reuse the space and expand the museum's facilities with the scheme we see today The labyrinth of spaces was swept away and the court glazed over, creating one of the largest indoor spaces in Europe (92x73m) The roof itself is part of a torus, and each double glazed unit is unique The old reading room was refurbished into a new exhibition space, and new facilities added in an egg-shaped extension which wraps around the domed structure New work also extends below the floor of the Court, with the Clore Education Centre, two auditoria, new African Galleries and several plant spaces Floor area/size m² Services engineer Contractor Building costs consultant Project manager Foster & Partners Buro Happold Mace Northcroft Reg Cobham British Museum davidb The Great Court is open daily except for the 24th, 25th, 26th of December and the 1st of January 0900 to 1800 Saturday to Thursday 0900 to 2030 Fridays (except Good Friday) Entrance to the Great Court and the Museum is (at the time of writing) free The nearest tube stations are; Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines) 500m Russell Square (Piccadilly Line) 800m Goodge Street (northern Line Charring Cross Branch) 800m For further details see the museum's web site:
photo: Nazar Leskiw City Hall The Queens Walk 110 SE1 2AA London The City Hall is located on the south bank of the Thames This distinctive glass globe is home to the Mayor of London, the London Assembly and the GLA It expresses the transparency and accessibility of the democratic process and demonstrates the potential for a sustainable, virtually non-polluting public building The building has no front or back: its shape is derived from a geometrically modified sphere This hybrid form is designed to minimise the surface area exposed to direct sunlight The design incorporates a number of features designed to make the building as green as possible Robert Townshend designed the surrounding public space City Hall usually takes part in London Open House, on the third weekend in September each year Check wwwlondonopenhouseorg for details Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Building costs consultant Foster & Partners Townshend Landscape s ARUP Davis Langdon & Everest Greater London Authority (GLA) Marieke_Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens Members of the public may visit parts of City Hall Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm To visit as much of the interior as possible, including the ramp down to the debating chamber, look out for opportunities in London's annual late-september 'open house' weekend (wwwlondonopenhouseorg) Underground and rail stations: London Bridge (Jubilee and Northern lines and mainline station), Tower Hill (Circle and District lines), Tower Gateway (Docklands Light Railway) Buses: 42, 47, 78, 381, RV1 River services: to London Bridge City Pier, also Tower Millennium Pier and St Katharine's Pier - see Transport for London - river services Bicycle: bicycle racks are available at City Hall, on the south side of the building by Potters Fields Park 18
Ravensbourne College Penrose Way 6 SE10 0EW London This college can boast a number of famous alumni including Stella McCartney and David Bowie Originally located in Chislehurst, Kent, in September 2010 it moved to a new building in the Greenwich Peninsula It forms part of a masterplan, centred on the adjacent O2 Arena (formerly known as the Millennium Dome), prepared by Terry Farrell The new building is intended to pioneer new ways of teaching, geared towards the digital generation Internally the building has been designed without department boundaries Finished quite sparsely, it is intended to be flexible, with the aim of advancing the boundaries of teaching However, the most striking feature of the building is its exterior Covered in thousands of pressed metal tiles, arranged in what is described as a tessellated non-periodic pattern, the swirling designs and differing sizes of windows are created using just five different tiles Project is not public! 20 Bush Lane House Cannon Street 80 EC4N 6HL London This building was intended to straddle the proposed Jubilee Line extension along Fleet Street Consequently the designers were faced with the problem of having restricted access to the ground and where foundations could be located To overcome these difficulties, the building sits on four pairs of huge circular columns Sprouting from these is a connected, diagonal grid of tubes, which act structurally to carry all the column free floor plates, and also provide bracing The tubes are reputed to be water filled to dissipate heat in the event of a fire, and prevent the structure collapsing Fortunately, this has never been put to the test After going to all this effort, the route of the Jubilee Line was changed, and was routed East on the other side of the River Thames, so all the structural gymnastics were in vain Nevertheless, the building is distinctive and unique, if not a little more brashly detailed than one would normally expect Project is not public! 1976 Arup Associates Trafalgar House Developments Limited davidb The building sits over Cannon Street tube station (District and Circle lines) 20
photo: Richard Davies photo: Richard Davies Lords Media Centre Saint John's Wood Road NW8 8QN London At Lord's exists a tradition of patronage of innovative structures The objective of the design was to respect and savour the essential nature of Lord's while bringing to it a building that will herald the coming millennium and provide the most elegant and state-of-the-art media centre in the world The NatWest Media Centre at Lord's is one of the most innovative buildings this century It's the first all aluminium semi-monococque building in the world and represents a breakthrough, not just in the creation of a new 3D aesthetic but in its method of construction This building was built and fitted out not by the construction industry but by a boatyard, using the very latest advances in boat building technology The aerodynamic contours reflect the sweep of the plan of the Ground with the enclosing skin formed by a smooth, white, seamless shell The west facing glazing is inclined to avoid any glare or reflections while providing unobstructed views of the game for the world's media photo: Richard Davies Floor area/size m² Roof & facade consultant Services engineer Building costs consultant Project manager Contractor Future Systems ARUP Billings Design Associates Buro Happold Davis Langdon & Everest Gardiner & Theobald Pendennis Shipyard Marylebone Cricket Club The cricket grounds are open for the public Check the website for guided tours and opening hours:
