5 photo: David Cowlard photo: David Cowlard Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre Peerless Street EC1 London hildrenseyecentre The new children's eye centre at Moorfield's Eye Hospital This world-class treatment centre for children's eye conditions brings together the medical expertise of Moorfields Eye Hospital and the research base of the Institute of Ophthalmology The new facility is the largest hospital anywhere in the world solely dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of children s eye disease It provides a dedicated centre with outpatient clinics, day surgery, research facilities and a short stay hostel for patients' families Clinics are arranged above the welcoming reception with a shop and a cafe enjoying views south into a pocket park The eight storey solar shading façade is composed of shimmering free form louvres with a bay for outpatients waiting area projecting out at the third floor Project is not public! 6 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh 88 Wood Street Wood Street 88 EC2V 7DB London This is one of the best speculative office buildings in London Built for the Daiwa Corporation on the site of what was to be their European headquarters, 88 Wood Street is an outstanding addition to the city of London The scheme comprises of three connected accommodation blocks, each with a different footprint and height The lowest block has the largest footprint and is located on Wood Street where it respects the scale of the tower of St Alban's church by Christopher Wren and other older listed buildings Turning the corner onto London Wall, the blocks increase in height Sited in between each block are the marvellous vertical circulation elements which mark the building out as something special It is in the same language as Lloyds of London but completely transparent; you're left wondering how the stairs stand up Connecting all these elements is a two-storey entrance hall, accessed at Wood Street and running the length of the ground floor along London Wall Project is not public! 9 photo: Maurice Brill Lighting Design Finsbury Avenue Square Installation Whitecross Place EC2A London The light design for Finsbury Avenue Square was part of a light masterplan for the entire area around the square in the middle of the Broadgate business district: sq metres of office, retail and leisure accommodation, and Liverpool Street Station The aim was to transform the square, a rather unprepossessing space where people wandered around aimlessly at night, into an attractive social space with a distinct identity But the result does more than that: thanks to the innovative use of lighting, Finsbury Avenue Square has become one of the most exciting public spaces in the city The open space is structured by a taut grid of LED-backed frosted glass strips, which emerge from the ground to form the supports for the square's benches The LED's (over 10000) can change colour, be dimmed and are currently programmed to display 10 'scenes', varying from subtly changing (in the time that it takes to cross the square), to turbulent 'Tsunami' or violent 'Matrix' scenarios photo: Maurice Brill Lighting Design 2004 Main designer, Artist Lighting designer Maurice Brill Lighting Design Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Artistic Licence The British Land Corporation Kirsten_Hannema Located next to the A501 (City Road) It's a bit confusing, but although it's called the Finsbury Avenue Square Installation, it's located just a few corners away at the Whitecross Place The Finsbury Square is somewhere else close by 9

10 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Folding Landscape Creekside SE 8 3DZ London photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Laban dance school is located in Deptford, an industrial district to the southwest of London The design of the garden in front of the building by Herzog and De Meuron reflects the interior of the building, which is characterized by ramps The way to the main entrance of the building leads in a slightly zigzag course through a hilly landscape created by bending and folding The sloping lawns and geometric hills form a lively landscape As in a natural landscape, chains of hills and dales form extremely dissimilar situations that can be variously used, for example the lawn steps as a performance room in the sense of an amphitheatre The modeling of the ground also made it possible to dispose of the existing, contaminated soil on the building side of the site at a reasonable cost The decision to refrain from planting trees was based on ecological considerations: a rare bird, the black redstart, would otherwise have been hunted by birds of prey lurking in the trees Floor area/size m² Landscape architect Vogt Landschaftarchitekten The Laban Centre MI_MOA The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) offers a frequent service to Cutty Sark station which is a few minutes walk from Laban The DLR joins to the London Underground at Monument / Bank (Central, Circle and District Lines), Shadwell (East London Line), Canary Wharf (Jubilee Line) and Stratford (Central Line) At Cutty Sark turn right out of the station and right again on to Creek Road Take the second left after the bridge, Creekside and Laban is a on your left (10 min walk) 10

11 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Nazar Leskiw Swiss-Re HQ St Mary Axe 30 EC3A London 30 St Mary Axe (for obvious reasons also called The Gherkin) is a landmark 40-storey office building in the heart of London's financial centre, developed by Swiss Re and designed by architects Foster and Partners The tower has a circular plan that widens as it rises from the ground and then tapers towards its apex which makes it appear less bulky than a rectilinear building of equivalent floor area 30 St Mary Axe is London's first environmentally sustainable tall building Among the building's most distinctive features are its windows, which open to allow natural ventilation to supplement the mechanical systems for a good part of the year Whenever possible, recycled and recyclable materials have been specified throughout the building and innovative ways of reducing energy consumption have been implemented photo: Mieke Vullings Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Foster & Partners Arup Swiss Re Marieke_Mannens Only the retail space located at ground level, opening onto the landscaped plaza, will be open to the public The stunning Bar and Restaurant at the top of 30 St Mary Axe affords some of the best views in London Whilst normally reserved for tenants of the building and their guests, the top floors also provide a number of entertaining opportunities for external guests Walk 5 minutes from underground station Liverpoolstreet, or Bank 11

15 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Thames Barrier North Woolwich road E16 London The Thames Barrier is a flood control structure on the river Thames, located downstream of central London Designed by Rendel, Palmer and Tritton, it was finished in 1982 and officially opened in 1984 It's purpose is to protect London from being flooded by an exceptionally high tide moving up from the sea, exacerbated by a storm surge At low tide it is opened to release water flowing down the Thames The barrier divides the river into four 61m and two 31m navigable spans and four smaller non-navigable channels between nine concrete piers and two abutments The flood gates across these openings are circular segments in cross section, raised by hydraulics and operated by rotating It is the world's second largest movable flood barrier, the largest being the Maeslantkering in The Netherlands photo: Maarten Helle 1982 Rendel, Palmer and Tritton Greater London Council HelleBeelden Visitors are not allowed on the barrier, but is can be seen from the riverside 24/7 The barrier is located just off North Woolwich Road, serviced by underground station 'Pontoon Dock' Coming from the southern banks, the barrier can be reached from Eastmoor Street, a small street off Woolwich Road (not to be mistaken with North Woolwich Road on the northern river banks) 15

18 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh Hauer-King House Douglas Road 40 N1 2LD London The Hauer-King House, designed for two restaurateurs, sits in a conservation area between a row of terraced houses, and a pub Roughly wedge shaped in section, the front elevation is vertical wall of glass bricks, behind which one can clearly see the main stair serving all the floors of the house To the rear or south the roof slopes down to the ground and is completely glazed Trees at the bottom of the garden provide shade in the summer to help prevent the house overheating The ground floor is one level below the street/entrance level and features a small guest or au-pair's flat, together with the kitchen/dining area, which opens up to the rear garden This floor is connected to the living room, at the entrance level above, by an accommodation stair Above this are two bedrooms for the family's children, and the top floor serves as a master suite Bathrooms and storage spaces etc are treated as brightly coloured free-standing pods, which contrast with the chiefly white interior Project is not public! 1994 Main designer, Future Systems Amanda Levete s Jeremy King & Deborah Hauer davidb photo: David Baugh The nearest tube station is Highbury and Islington (Victoria Line and London Overground) (Fare Zone 2) Note that this station is one of two that serves Arsenal Football Club, so on Saturday afternoons, when Arsenal play at home, this station and the trains may get rather crowded The nearest train station is Essex Road (Fare Zone 2), which is served by First Capital Connect services from Moorgate and Old Street and Finsbury Park 18

21 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Millenium Bridge Pauls Walk 1 EC4V London This is the first pedestrian rivercrossing in central London for more than a century A shallow suspension links Bankside with the City This winning entry of a competition organized in 1996 was an innovative "blade of light" from Arup, Foster & Partners and Sir Anthony Caro Unexpected lateral vibration (resonant structural response) caused the bridge to be closed for modifications The movements were produced by the sheer numbers of pedestrians (90,000 in the first day, with up to 2,000 on the bridge at any one time) Attempts were made to limit the people crossing the bridge: this led to long queues, but dampened neither public enthusiasm, nor the vibrations themselves The closure only 3 days after opening attracted public criticism Solved by installing dampers under and between the deck and the river piers; excellent, as it does not impact the aesthetics Linking the 2 major tourist attractions of St Paul's Cathedral and the fabulous Tate Modern, the bridge is well worth a visit photo: Ruth L Structural engineer Foster & Partners Arup City of London boeboe 24/7 The Millennium Bridge connects two landmarks in London - St Paul's Cathedral (next to St Paul's London Underground station) designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century, and Herzog & de Meuron's Tate Modern gallery The nearest underground stations are Blackfriars or Mansion House, both on the Circle line and District line The nearest mainline station is Blackfriars This is one of those cliché-projects: 'you can't miss it' 21

24 Vents Paternoster Square 10 EC4M 7DX London Paternoster Square is part of a development in a high-profile, sensitive location, next to St Paul s Cathedral in London It is a new public space containing a pre-existing underground electricity substation This substation required a cooling system with outlet and inlet vents, but the client team was unhappy with the proposed solution for a single large object as it would turn the surrounding space into a corridor The studio made use of the two existing holes in the concrete slab covering the substation, to reduce the overall size of the vent object by splitting the outlet part into two smaller vents saving significant space by setting the inlet ducts into the ground using grilles flush with the pavement The Vents are fabricated from 63 identical, 8mm thick, stainless steel isosceles triangles welded together and finished by glass bead blasting photo: Jack Solomon 2010 Heatherwick Studio jacksolo17 The nearest main line and tube station is St Paul's (Central Line) 24
