3 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Nazar Leskiw Swiss-Re HQ St Mary Axe 30 EC3A London 30 St Mary Axe (for obvious reasons also called The Gherkin) is a landmark 40-storey office building in the heart of London's financial centre, developed by Swiss Re and designed by architects Foster and Partners The tower has a circular plan that widens as it rises from the ground and then tapers towards its apex which makes it appear less bulky than a rectilinear building of equivalent floor area 30 St Mary Axe is London's first environmentally sustainable tall building Among the building's most distinctive features are its windows, which open to allow natural ventilation to supplement the mechanical systems for a good part of the year Whenever possible, recycled and recyclable materials have been specified throughout the building and innovative ways of reducing energy consumption have been implemented photo: Mieke Vullings Project is public! m² Structural engineer Arup Swiss Re Marieke_Mannens Only the retail space located at ground level, opening onto the landscaped plaza, will be open to the public The stunning Bar and Restaurant at the top of 30 St Mary Axe affords some of the best views in London Whilst normally reserved for tenants of the building and their guests, the top floors also provide a number of entertaining opportunities for external guests Walk 5 minutes from underground station Liverpoolstreet, or Bank 3

4 photo: Carlos Dias photo: Carlos Dias Bridge of Aspiration Floral Street WC2E London Twisting high above Floral Street in Covent Garden, the 'Bridge of Aspiration', provides the dancers of the Royal Ballet School with a direct link to the Grade 1 listed Royal Opera House The award-winning design addresses a series of complex contextual issues, and is legible both as a fully integrated component of the buildings it links, and as an independent architectural element The skewed alignment and different levels of the landing point dictate the form of the crossing, which is geometrically and structurally simple A concertina of 23 square portals with glazed intervals are supported from an aluminium spine beam These rotate in sequence for the skew in alignment, performing a quarter-turn overall along the length of the bridge The result is an elegant intervention high above the street, which evokes the fluidity and grace of dance (text from website architect) photo: Carlos Dias 2003 Wilkinson Eyre s MI_MOA metro Piccadilly - Covent Garden 4

5 Oxford Street Oxford Street W1R 1AJ London This project is a refurbishment of a 1960's commercial building One floor has been added to the structure to provide extra office space The new façade on Oxford Street, London's busiest shopping thoroughfare, consists of a number of projecting hexagonal bays, which offer the inhabitants side views along the street The architects describe the façade as 'jewel-like' It is not instantly recognisable as a Future System's project, given the precedents of Selfridges Birmingham and Lord's Media Centre The angular geometry is a world away from these projects However, it is vast improvement over what was there before, and looking up above the shop fronts, it is a much needed, eyecatching addition to this famous street 2007 Services engineer Roof & facade consultant Future Systems Arup Billings Design Associates Savant The shops on the ground floor are open to the public, but are not part of Future Systems' work The nearest tube station is Oxford Circus (Bakerloo, Victoria and Central lines) Use the Oxford Street East (south side) exit Whilst the offices are not public, the shops below are 5

6 Boiler Suit Great Maze Pond SE1 9RT London The boiler house at Guy's and Saint Thomas' Hospital is located next to the main entrance An important building, but regarded as ugly It has long been held that the environment often influences how you feel: therefore having attractive hospitals is important Recognising this, the hospital decided upon an upgrade and, with the collaboration of the Crafts Council, commissioned Thomas Heatherwick to refurbish the exterior The solution he arrived at consists of 108 almost identical square panels or tiles, the edges of which have an uniform 'S'-shape, which are then infilled with woven stainless steel mesh Individually, this gives each frame an appearance akin to a hyperbolic paraboloid, but combined together the effect is that of a rippling surface All the panels are demountable to allow access for maintenance The building is specially illuminated for night-time appreciation A distinctive and welcoming icon for both staff, patients and visitors 2007 Heatherwick Studio Guy's and Saint Thomas' HNS Foundation Trust The nearest main line and tube station is London Bridge (Northern Line Bank branch and Jubilee Lines) 6

7 Ravensbourne College Penrose Way 6 SE10 0EW London This college can boast a number of famous alumni including Stella McCartney and David Bowie Originally located in Chislehurst, Kent, in September 2010 it moved to a new building in the Greenwich Peninsula It forms part of a masterplan, centred on the adjacent O2 Arena (formerly known as the Millennium Dome), prepared by Terry Farrell The new building is intended to pioneer new ways of teaching, geared towards the digital generation Internally the building has been designed without department boundaries Finished quite sparsely, it is intended to be flexible, with the aim of advancing the boundaries of teaching However, the most striking feature of the building is its exterior Covered in thousands of pressed metal tiles, arranged in what is described as a tessellated non-periodic pattern, the swirling designs and differing sizes of windows are created using just five different tiles m² Structural engineer Contractor Roof & facade consultant Services engineer Foreign Office s Adams Kara Taylor Bovis Lend Lease Buro Happold Gardiner & Theobald Scott Wilson LTD Ravensbourne College The nearest tube station is North Greenwich (Jubilee Line) At the top of the escalators turn through 180 degrees and walk towards the O2 Arena The project is straight ahead 7

8 Evelyn Grace Academy Shakespeare Road 255 SE24 0QN London Evelyn Grace Academy is Zaha Hadid 's first completed building in England and RIBA Stirling Prize winner 2011 It comprises of two separate schools - Evelyn and Grace - both of which are divided into two by age groups, making a total of four schools under one roof, each with 270 pupils All four academies have their own entrances and external break areas The overall footprint resembles a letter "S" or "Z" running diagonally across the site At one end (the west) is the Evelyn School with Grace at the other, separated by a central administration unit, library, visitor's entrance (at ground level) with shared halls, dining facilities and so on on the upper floors Also at ground level, shooting off from the ends of the arms, are an arts and technology block on the west side, with a sports hall on the east Internally, floor plates are 18m wide, with rooms ranged on either side of a central circulation route Detailing is kept simple and robust using economic materials m² Project manager Landscape designer Contractor Services engineer Acoustics consultant Zaha Hadid s Capita Symonds Davis Langdon & Everest Gross Max Mace Ove Arup Sandy Brown Associates Ark Schools/Department for Children Schools & Families The nearest tube station is Brixton (Victoria Line - fare zone 2) Conventional train services stop at Loughborough Junction, which is served by First Capital Connect Trains Whilst not officially open to the public, its popularity has forced the school to run a number of limited guided tours Check with the school's web site for details: wwwevelyngraceacademyorg/tour-information 8

9 The Walbrook Cannon Street EC4N 5HA London Foster's Walbrook Building sits at the junction of Cannon Street and Walbrook The latter takes it name from one of London's "lost" rivers - tributaries of the Thames which have been culverted over In plan, the deep footprint is "L" shaped, with the southern arm terminating on Cannon Street and the junction with the remaining arm taking place adjacent to Sir Christopher Wren's famous church of St Stephen Walbrook It is here that Foster has placed the main entrance, rather than at the more obvious location on Cannon Street Behind the entrance lies the main core, which on the upper levels also gives access to two oval shaped atria - one located in each wing Externally, the rippled and curved form of the building is clad with curtain walling, which in turn is concealed behind a covering of cast aluminium louvers At the crook of the two wings a small public garden has been preserved and refurbished m² Landscape designer Lighting designer Project manager Roof & facade consultant Services engineer Acoustics consultant Contractor Charles Funke Claude Engel David Bonnett Associates Davis Langdon & Everest Devla Patman Associates DP9 GVA Second London Wall KKS Strategy Ove Arup PCM Safety Reef Associates Roger Preston & Partners Sandy Brown Associates Skanska Minerva Limited The nearest tube stations are Cannon Street (Circle and District Lines) and Bank (Central, Waterloo & City Lines and Docklands Light Railway) Both stations are in Fare Zone 1 9
