7 THE HISTORIC PAST OF GREENWICH Greenwich is a name etched in history, with the famous Royal Observatory s Prime Meridian the original basis for coordinated timekeeping and maritime navigation across the world. Seated atop the hill in Greenwich Park, the Observatory has long been the site of scientific progress and home of Britain s Astronomer Royal. Prime Meridian This is a place awash with the history of seafaring. Only a ten-minute walk away, the National Maritime Museum is the largest institution of its kind in the world, holding some two million pieces that include maritime art, cartography, ship models and plans, and scientific and navigational instruments. Royal Observatory Now proudly displayed on the banks of the Thames, the celebrated Cutty Sark was one of the last and most advanced clipper ships produced before steam came to dominate the high seas.
