1 Building Your Home From Home We re here to make you feel at home. All of our spaces are your spaces. We re transforming our bars, cafes, social and study areas to create the places to make friends and relax. Students Union currently occupies a number of disparate spaces across a variety of buildings on the Bloomsbury Campus. As a result, the Union currently lacks a coherent identity and collaboration and communication between the Union departments is increasingly impeded. In addition, many of the spaces occupied by the Union are currently inaccessible and outdated; which does not align with the approachable and open ethos of Students Union. The proposal looks to consolidate and enhance the provision at the Union, as well as improving the internal spaces used by the Union staff and students. It is hoped that this will increase the Union s outreach and engagement with the growing student body of ; bettering the student experience, as well as the day-to-day staff operations and communication. We are keen to get feedback from as many students and staff as possible during the consultation, and your views on the space and our proposed developments are very important. This consultation aims to ensure the new space has the widest possible appeal across all building users. The new facilities will address problems with the current space, including issues with temperature, light, air quality, and provide much-improved and coherent admin and reception spaces for students, providing enhanced service and an environment in which our students and staff can study and socialise. Students Union, along with Estates, have begun this consultation with students on the proposed redevelopment of Gordon Street, the and the Lewis s Building. Hawkins\Brown have been appointed as architects for the project and continue to work in close consultation with the Union team and Users as the project develops into the next design stages. 3 Students Union The strategic vision In order to rationalise and best enhance the services of the Union, it is important to consider the physical constraints of the existing buildings and available areas. The spaces at Gordon Street, Lewis s and Bloomsbury buildings all have very different qualities and therefore provide varying opportunities and constraints. For example, the spaces at the Bloomsbury building are larger and have greater columnfree spans than those at Gordon Street. This makes the much better suited to the activities and studio spaces required by Clubs and Societies, whereas Gordon Street is better suited for office use. We propose that each of the three main buildings become hubs of the Union; each providing specific services. This not only gives each of the buildings an identity and association, but also allows us to group the Students Union services to spaces that will best accommodate users. The proposal will also work with other elements of the Students Union at the Institute of Education and the ew Student Centre to provide students with new high-quality, adaptable study/social learning spaces. 4 Students Union Improving the student provision Better Study Space Provision Currently the Student Union manages a variety of study spaces; including the Wolfson Study Area on the second floor of Gordon Street. We are proposing to increase the provision of dedicated study space by moving the Wolfson Study Area to the upper two floors of the Lewis s Building and providing a new study zone on the first floor of the. These spaces will be better lit, have better AV and power provision and will consist of a variety of different workspaces - including quieter areas and group study areas. The number of study spaces on campus will be significantly increased with the opening of the ew Student Centre adjacent to the. Surplus to this, Richard Mully s Bar, Phineas Bar, the George Farha Cafe and the Bloomsbury Cafe will be refurbished to provide a better environment with more power and data points so that students can use these spaces for social study. Better Showers/WCs There is a significant lack of shower/changing facilities for those cycling/running to and those doing lunchtime CSC exercise classes (particularly in the ). More Storage Storage is lacking across all buildings and all departments. This is required in a number of forms-mainly: secure confidential storage/typical office storage (such as paper storage)/secure staff storage for personal belongings, as well as storage for transportable AV items are required. CSC also requires more/ more suitable storage for equipment. We are looking to increase and improve the storage available for the Union and will be working with the Union and Estates to see how we can better manage the problems of storage and access to this. Approachable/Less Corporate Aesthetics & Feel Furniture, colour and pattern will all be utilised to create spaces which echo the key values of the Union; spaces and services which are ambitious, inclusive, creative, representative, and empower students to take a proactive role within the Union. Accessibility Accessibility within the existing buildings is poor. We are looking to improve accessibility for everyone across all the Union spaces so that they exceed best practice. We are looking to increase the number of WCs and showers, as well as refurbishing the existing ones. We will also be providing more accessible WCs and showers. Flexible Shared Spaces We are working with the Union and Estates to see how we can improve the efficiency of the room booking system at the Union. We have looked to reconfigure the space available at the to increase the number of bookable spaces for students. In addition to this, we will be improving the environment within these spaces; enabling them to be used for a variety of CSC activities including lunchtime exercise classes.
