3 Botania Anne Frankstraat BZ Amsterdam At the crossing of the Nieuwe Herengracht and the Entrepotdok the Botania apartment complex rises out of the water The autonomous brick façade refers to the Amsterdam canal houses and the composition of white wooden window frames with green glass is a modern version of the traditional urban block It has 40 apartments that enclose an inner courtyard The 1000 m2 of commercial space on the ground floor is at certain places set back, behind the main façade, to create entrances and public space m² de Architekten Cie Botania BV, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 9 and 14 pass closeby at the Plantage Middenlaan 3

6 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Four Towers Jan van Zutphenplantsoen 1069 Amsterdam In Osdorp, SW of Amsterdam, major changes are under way to transform a currently vacant zone into a residential district connected to the existing housing area alongside it All towers are sited according to the given urban footprint and take up the maximum envelope, giving a total of 390 apartments evenly distributed over 11 levels The plan allows for a high degree of interchangeability of layouts so as to offer a diversity of apartment types A central core and a number of strategically positioned service shafts enable the different types to mirror and shift not only with regard to each other but also in terms of the spatial configuration within one apartment An aluminum cladding indicates the separation between the apartments, while the mirroring concept of the plan results in a playful façade pattern ranging between alteration and iteration, between standardizing and individualizing The twofold elements bring about a subtle discontinuation within the unitized surface photo: Dirk Verwoerd 2008 Wiel Arets s Delta Forte jpmm 6

8 Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 8

9 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Luuk Kramer IJburg Block 14 Bert Haanstrakade DK Amsterdam Block 14 lies at a unique location within the Haveneiland grid, consisting of streets and closed blocks Due to the slight change of angle of the site, the block has a trapezium shape Taking into account the scant depth and the exceptionally positive conditions along the edges, it was logical to situate as many houses as possible along the banks and to allocate maximum openness to the inner area As a consequence, the houses profit fully from their situation on the IJ Water and also have a direct relationship with the more sheltered, semi-public inner area The court is connected to the quay via a spacious platform stairway The difference in height at the site offers the possibility of generating extraordinary transitions between public and private areas In addition to single-family dwellings with access to gardens, an unusual type of house has been introduced: the 'Zwebo', which is an abbreviation of the Dutch for 'floating single-family upstairs apartment' photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer Contractor DKV en ABT Smit's Bouwbedrijf IJ-Delta Ontwikkeling (Smit's Bouwbedrijf, Era Bouw, Bouwfonds, Ymere) DKV 9

11 photo: Allard van der Hoek photo: Allard van der Hoek Nieuw Peil Nicolaas Ruychaverstraat 1067 NH Amsterdam The main thrust of the regeneration of Dutch post-war housing estates is demolition and new-build Thus far, few of the interventions have taken much account of the context and the particular identity of these neighbourhoods, which has resulted in dissonant building types and the introduction of shapes, colours and materials that sit oddly with the characteristic, simple modern architecture The apartment building that Roberto Meyer and Jeroen van Schooten realized in Amsterdam-West differs from this generality precisely because it does not deviate fundamentally from what stood there before it and to some extent still stands around it The chief difference is the radiant presence in a setting that is dominated by grey and brown The concrete block with white granite aggregate and the glass balconies lend distinction to an apartment building containing low and medium-priced rental units It is a radiant signal that a better future is at hand photo: Allard van der Hoek 2006 MVSA s Nieuw Peil (De Key/Principaal) Hans_Ibelings Tram 13 stops just in front of the building 11

20 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd La Grande Cour Westerdokseiland EH Amsterdam The apartment building La Grande Cour was the first completed building on the newly regenerated Westerdokseiland The redevelopment is part of the large-scale development along the south bank of the IJ The urban plan by Peter Defesche (OD205) made a clear distinction between the buildings along the IJ (high-scale) and on the other hand the city centre side (small-scale) La Grande Cour is the most southern of the three urban blocks The architecture of the south block is allocated to three architects Each office was given a courtyard and a periscope tower to develop During the planning process continual coordination between the three schemes was paramount in order to ensure a unified architectural outcome, similarly a high level of attention was given to the architectural details The three courtyards (cours) each contain a more individual architecture They all have varying heights, the IJ side (eastern side) is higher than the western edge photo: Dirk Verwoerd Main designer, MVSA s de Architekten Cie Heren 5 architecten City Cour Combination VOF dirkverwoerd This recently developed area lies just west of Central train station, about 5 minutes walking along side of the IJ 20

22 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss De Keyzer Czaar Peterstraat PR Amsterdam De Keyzer has been built on the site of a demolished monumental housing project ('de Dubbeltjespanden') Much care has been taken to match the original urban structure and architectural appearance of that project The building includes 68 apartments; 6 group dwellings and 8 independent apartment for a care institution The ground floor supplies commercial space The outer wall consists entirely of precast concrete brick, because the building site did not allow enough room for traditional brick work The 68 apartments have been grouped around 4 courtyards which supply extra light The light courts have special padded stucco facades that resemble a Chesterfield sofa The historic wall anchors of the facade of the demolished "Dubbeltjespanden" have been reused as decorative knots photo: Frankss Contractor Technical engineer Structural engineer FRANTZEN et al architecten Bot Bouwgroep Cauberg-Huygen Pieters Bouwtechniek De Principaal - De Key Franks You can take tram 10 in the Azartplein direction and get off at the Eerste Coehoornstraat stop in front of the project Alternatively, from Amsterdam Central Station you can take tram 26 and exit at the Rietlandpark stop From there it's a 5 minute walk all the way down the Czaar Peterstraat 22

23 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Zorro Ecuplein RN Amsterdam The residential tower 'Zorro' has 18 storeys and a car park and power station below ground level The figure of Zorro was used as a symbol: straight-backed, yet cloaked in a dashing cape The imagery of Zorro's cape has been literally applied The idea was to truly let the building's 'cloak' hang: there is only one apartment on the ground floor, so the elevation immediately above ground level remains open and the 'cloaked façade' hangs above the ground The 54 metres of the tower seem to hover above the surroundings This was achieved by collecting the forces of the floors and walls in a metre-thick first-floor slab of concrete which then redistributes the forces to conical columns that are flared beneath the 'cloak' In order to achieve abstractness, the window frames spiral up the building to the 17th storey The façade was constructed with a wooden structure, making Zorro the first high-rise building of its kind in the to employ this technique photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 1999 TANGRAM Architekten Delta roa, Amsterdam; SBDN vof, Beverwijk/Warmenhuizen; Woningstichting Zomers Buiten, Amsterdam construction dirkverwoerd 23

25 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 25

26 photo: Christian Richters De Tropenpunt Mauritskade RP Amsterdam Opposite of the largest anthropological museum, The Tropenmuseum, a new apartment building was set up, De Tropenpunt It consists out of twelve luxurious apartments, above an exposition space, bar and 14 mechanically organized indoor parking lots Its triangular location forms the new end of a 19th century building block Because of this shape, the apartments have a special floor plan, with light coming in from both sides Also in the façade we can recognize a special scheme with light: a mix of vertical and horizontal lines of dark stone, glass and aluminium The floors at the corner slightly overlap each other m² Contractor Designed by Erick van Egeraat Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA East side of town: tram 9 and bus 22 stop at Linnaeusstraat 26

33 photo: UXUS photo: UXUS Bloemgracht Loft Bloemgracht 1016 KH Amsterdam UXUS designed a private residence, located in a historic building on one of Amsterdam's famous canals The home is located in a 250 m2, 18th-century warehouse with a panoramic view over the city The interior of the loft, situated in an old sugar warehouse built in 1763, had remained in its original state for almost 250 years and the owners wanted to keep as much intact with as little intervention to the space as possible In keeping the original open-plan layout, UXUS created a series of dramatic curtain walls that could be opened and closed according to the needs of use Made of luxurious Italian linen, the curtain walls are opaque when lit from the front yet transparent from behind At night, the space becomes a series of glowing tents, creating the effect of a surreal interior landscape All of the decorative interior elements were selected to reflect the eclectic tastes of the owners photo: UXUS m² Interior architect UXUS Private UXUS 33

34 photo: Miguel Loos photo: Miguel Loos Holiday Apartment Amsterdam Hazenstraat 1016 Amsterdam For this conversion of a small studio apartment in the centre of Amsterdam into a holiday home, the intervention was kept as compact as possible Around the sanitary core, a multifunctional piece of furniture is constructed, containing all the functions required: a hall stand, a kitchen with fridge, cooker and washer-dryer, a double bed, a dining table and a lot of storage space The basic shape was a simple cubic volume, which we wrapped around the sanitary core as a second skin In the design process, two big bites were taken out of the volume, creating the hall stand and kitchen counter A fold-away bed and a linen cupboard were also excised As a last step, a dining table was cut out, which can be extracted from under the kitchen counter All cutting planes were covered in olive green panelboard, emphasizing the sculptural character of the core In addition, the apartment was provided with a light green linoleum floor and white plastered walls When closed, the core constructio m² Loos s WHD Interieurbouw Amsterdam FML photo: Miguel Loos 34
