MAAR supports an organized real estate environment and provides local REALTORS with essential market information, educational resources, a trusted networking community, an effective industry voice and a strong leadership for greater professional success. Our Mission. To provide the resources and leadership for REALTORS to succeed. Our Vision. To be the local real estate resource for a global market. Letter from the CEO The Minneapolis Area Association of REALTORS (MAAR) has a strong and honored history of excellence. Founded in 1887, the association is the largest local board in Minnesota and the 28th largest board in the nation. In 1916, Past President and Minneapolis member Charles Chadbourn coined the term REALTOR. The term was sold to the National Board of REALTORS for $1.00. Who would have known that the term Chadbourn created would become a national symbol of the real estate profession across the globe, and the honor it brings to Minneapolis? 130 years later, MAAR has over 8,000 members and our critical approach to excellence is to ensure member value and commitment. Providing REALTORS with essential tools to enhance their ability to complete transactions in a timely manner and make their job easier. In 2016, we increased membership, increased donations to charitable housing organizations, increased education opportunities, increased member services connections, increased our public relations initiatives and increased our government and public policy footprint. These were accomplishments not just for the increase, but for the betterment of our members and extending our reach to provide the services and programs needed to be successful. MAAR is about one thing the member. The success of one member is the success of all members. We are honored to have John Smaby elected First Vice-President of the National Association of REALTORS for 2017 and the NAR President in 2019; Wyn Ray named 2016 NAR Good Neighbor winner; Rod Helm elected 2019 NAR Region 8 Vice President; and, 2016 President Judy Shields lead MAAR through another great and successful year. Our long tradition of bringing forth leaders to the local, state and national levels along with REALTOR leaders within the Minneapolis area communities demonstrates this excellence and success. I look forward to an exciting The MAAR team will continue to strive for member excellence. - Bill Wald
3 Community Impact MAAR Foundation: REALGivers make a real difference. The Minneapolis Area Association of REALTOR Foundation envisions a society without homelessness. We believe everyone deserves a place to call home. To realize that vision, we fund local nonprofits that provide housing programs and services for those in search of safe, sustainable housing and all program participants and clients are treated with respect regardless of their economic status. Whether by providing emergency shelter for those fleeing domestic violence, creating housing for those challenged with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or educating potential first-time homebuyer about the benefits of homeownership, our housing partners are creating housing solutions that address the most basic human need, which is a necessity of housing. REALTORS who donate to the MAAR Foundation helps us to support local housing organizations. REALTOR contributions to the MAAR Foundation create lasting impact in the housing community. In 2016, the MAAR Foundation supported fifteen organizations with housing grants, and ten housing organizations received matching funds through the Give2Give Broker Office Matching Fund Program, which launched in In addition to the housing grants, REALTORS committee volunteer hours and sweat equity hours to transform the courtyard at St. Anne s Senior Housing complex located in North Minneapolis. Not only did we transform the courtyard, but we also left the volunteer project with a little more joy in our hearts. 4 New Members and Membership History In 2016, MAAR held 20 orientations and averaged 55 members per class. MAAR s membership trends tend to follow the market up or down. In other words, when the market is performing well (as measured by sales and/or prices), we see more agents enter or return to the business. The opposite is also true. During the downturn, we saw membership levels decline. 6 Recognition and Awards REALTOR of the Year. Todd Walker was honored as the 2016 REALTOR of the Year in recognition of his commitment to MAAR, the real estate community and the community at large. The REALTOR of the Year recipient is allotted a $1,000 charitable gift. Todd selected the organization FOCUS, an outreach of the Orthodox Christian churches in the greater Twin Cities area. Their mission is to help the underserved poor, homeless, working poor and provide them with food, occupation and clothing. The outreach programs of FOCUS Minnesota are intended to enable FOCUS and its partners to meet the pressing demands of the poor and needy, and to initiate and/or augment charitable and humanitarian operations in the Twin Cities. Scholarships. The Ann Brockhouse Future Leader Scholarship was awarded to Thang Holt, a member who demonstrates leadership abilities within MAAR and the REALTOR community. The Jean Leake Emerging Market Service Scholarship was awarded to Erica Blanchard & Rebecca Simonton, members who serve the emerging markets communities, with particular efforts to increase homeownership among diverse communities in Minnesota. The recipients attended the National Association of REALTORS Midyear Legislative meetings in Washington D.C. They served as MAAR representatives on Capitol Hill, met with Minnesota Legislators to discuss housing policies, and attended NAR s housing conference. Heart of the Community. The MAAR Heart of the Community program awards a contribution up to $500 to an organization on behalf of a REALTOR who has made an extraordinary commitment to improve the quality of life in their local community through volunteer community service. The 2016 Heart of the Community Awards recipients included Bonita Everts, Chuma lkegwuani, Philip Rustad, Steven Ganz and Ted Field. 4
7 Membership Events MAAR Events. Ringing in 2016, MAAR hosted a mascarade themed event for Judy Shields s presidential installation at ARIA MPLS. Attendees were entertained throughout the evening by performances by local music group The Teddy Holidays, and had a custom photo booth on-site for those wishing to capture the moment. Two of our largest annual events the spring REALTOR Summit and fall Tech Byte sold to capacity, and we saw sellout numbers for our Member Appreciation Week s free headshots & free CE classes. A tiny home tour and food truck (hosted in the MAAR parking lot) capped off the week with a strong showing of curious members. Other successes in 2016 include our collaboration with MNAR and SPAAR for REALTOR Day at the MN State Fair and our board s participation/volunteerism in the 2016 Twin Cities Pride Festival a first for the Association. 8 Committees Young Professionals Network. YPN had a very productive year tackling a variety of events and working to increase engagement and participation. YPN had a strong showing of attendance at their Women s All-Star Panel (in partnership with WCR), Get A Clue mini conference (in partnership with SPAAR), Builder-REALTOR Exchange (in partnership with the Builder s Association YPN), and saw an increase in participation over 2015 for the annual 5K held at Lake Calhoun. Additional highlights include the YPN Annual Golf Outing, partnerships with Minnesota Housing and Minnesota Homeownership Center in presenting an Affordable Housing Roundtable and networking event, and our wildly popular annual boat cruise. YPN Annual 5K Event YPN Annual Golf Outing YPN Annual Boat Cruise YPN Affordable Housing Roundtable Global Business Council. The Global Business Council s mission is to be your real estate resource in a global market locally and abroad. In 2016 MAAR s Business Council held a number of cultural events, including Lunch and Learns, such as Muslim Financing; Dinner event on Ireland, and local cultural awareness with a tour of the Midtown Global Market. In addition, MAAR participates in the National Association of REALTORS s (NAR) Ambassador Program, think Sister City, with the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV), in Ireland. Global Midtown Market NAR IPAV 2016 Delegates Award Society and Community Engagement. This year, MAAR launched the Awards Society and Community Engagement Committee. The purpose of the committee is to review nominations and select the recipients of MAAR s scholarship programs, Heart of the Community Awards, and REALTOR of the Year Award. The committee is also responsible for organizing a membership volunteer service project in partnership with a local organization. This year, the committee partnered with Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), local PBS station. They recruited members to serve as volunteers to answer donor calls and collect donations during a nationally televised pledge drive. MAAR members are the volunteers for the show, Feel Better with Pressure Point Therapy featuring Dr. Michael Pinkus. 6
9 Committees Diversity Committee. The purpose of the MAAR Diversity Committee is to promote the benefits of homeownership and real estate as a profession in the community. This year, the committee participated in St. Louis Park High School Career Fair and Northside Housing Fair at Lucy Craft Laney School, hosted a viewing of Race, the Jessie Owens movie, and partnered with the City of Minneapolis to host a Navigating Diverse Markets through the home buying experience event with speakers from the city s Neighborhood and Community Relations Department. St Louis Park High School Career Fair. When asked the question, What does Homeonership mean to you? a student answered, It means having a stable, protected place to live. Somewhere you can actually call home. MAAR Race Marketing and Communications. The Marketing and Communications Committee oversees the strategic communications and marketing plan to promote MAAR s mission and vision to its members and the public. In 2016, the Marketing and Communications committee moved from a taskforce to a committee and implemented the Matchmaker Marketing and Communications ad campaign. Government Affairs. The Government Affairs Committee worked diligently in 2016 especially with fighting back the Rental Ordinance in Brooklyn Center. The City of Brooklyn Center introduced an ordinance that would limit the number of rental licenses issued for single family homes throughout the city. The proposal would cap the number of available rental licenses to 30 percent of the single family homes per block in R1 and R2 zoning districts. Through MAAR s Government Affairs Committee members came together and were able to defeat this Ordinance. 7
