6 CALIFORNIA F O U N D A T I O N Defining Tiki Style Beyond the nkitch" Label By Sven Kirten After two recent preervation iue about the Tonga Room in San Francico and the Trader Vic' in Beverly Hill have elicited a Jot of pre and community attention, l thought it might be helpful to compile a catalog of tyle element that mark what ha become known a "Tiki tyle" nowaday. l am not altogether innocent in the rie of that moniker, having written two book that defined thi unique phae of theme architecture which had been ignored by culture critic in it own time. Thi article i intended to give any intereted preervation community member a better undertanding of Tiki a an architectural tyle. ln it heyday, the 195 to 196, the term "Tiki" did not exit a the decriptive label for the genre. Back then, example of thi deign category were ometime referred to a "Kon Tiki", or more often a "Polyneian" tyle. Today, miconception and confuion about the Tiki genre are till common, and it i often viewed a merely kitchy and tacky. l am partly to blame for that, too, becaue both of my book were deigned a eye candy coffee table portfolio, and not a cholarly textbook. Yet they demontrated that Tiki tyle i clearly more than than a temporary, iolated folly. 1t wa a populit deign movement that grew out of a pecific place, time, and ociohitoric context that exited during a ditinct period in mainland America (much more o than in Hawaii, or Polyneia in general). lt tyle-language wa born in the retaurant indutry, and then, in it heyday, applied to the architecture of Motel, bowling alley and apartment complexe all over the United State. To narrow down the definition of Tiki tyle, l have to briefly explain the difference between what l call "Polyneian pop" and it ub-genre, "Tiki tyle". The term Polyneian pop applie to all edifice built in the tyle of South Sea bamboo hideaway during the 193 to the 197. Tiki tyle evolved out of, and built on thi genre. lt actually flourihed only during a very brief period, approximately from 1955 to The two defining factor of Tiki tyle are 1) the ue of the Tiki Agure a a ymbol for the Polyneian paradie, and 2) it architectural application into modernit tructure of that period. lt i that very juxtapoition between pace age modernim and nai've primitivim that give Tiki Style it unique energy. The mot prominent architectural expreion of thi modem primitivim wa the A-frame, already in ue for churche, ki lodge and fat food chain, employed here to reemble native hut and meeting houe. (ee #2). While Tiki began to pop up in and around Polyneian retaurant 7. What element make thi tructure an example of Tiki Style? 2. We begin our expedition at the Northern mot tip at 89 N. Roemead Blvd in Roemead, where the amaing A-frame roof line of the Outrigger apartment are the mot telling remnant of the tyle. ln denial of it origin, it ha clear fall-off of contruction from the mid-6 on. Today, many of the retaurant example of that period have been lot to renovation or detruction, the mot tragic cae being the Kahiki in Columbu, Ohio, which, depite making it onto the National Regiter of Hitoric Place, wa raed for a Walgreen tore in September 2. For thi reaon l choe Tiki apartment building a the bet urviving ample of the tyle. Mot ubiquitou in Southern California, but preent all the way up the Wet coat to Seattle, and on the Atlantic coat in Florida, thee "Tiki village" have urvived the tide of time better than bowling alley and retaurant, and they incorporate all the element of the tyle. With Roemead Blvd, Lo Angele can offer an ideal model route of thi category, where everal example, from obliterated to well-cared-for, been renamed "The Huntington." Here we can define the tyle by what ha been renovated away: Once a large Tiki tatue tood under the main A-frame, which had it facia wallpapered with tropical matting. A i often the cae, the roof outrigger beam have been awed off. But embedded in the right rock wall we find the definitive proof of the building' tylitic root: Thi exact type of Chinee tile wa firt employed by Don The Beachcomber and Trader Vic in their retaurant (ee #4). Lat not leat, the wimming pool of the Outrigger/Huntington i till graced by the traditional pool hut rec room-even though it i obcured by the now obligatory iron fence (ee #5). The A-frame till ha it jutting outrigger beam (though the lower one have been lopped oft). Tropical foliage abound (ee #6).
