AFM ALC Ghent, 1995 Adriaan Verhult Preident of the International Commiion for the Hitory of Town Ann. Clon. Ann. Conn. Ann. Inif. Ann. Tig. AU 1, 2 INTRODUCTION It wa in a pirit of co-operation after the econd world war that in 1955 the International Commiion for the Hitory of Town recommended the publication of a erie of European national hitoric town atlae to encourage a better undertanding of common European root and to facilitate comparative urban tudie. Since then facicle for c. 460 town and citie in eventeen European countrie have been publihed, more or le on the line recommended by the Commiion. Thi volume i part of Ireland contribution to the cheme. At an interdiciplinary ympoium on Irih town and medieval Europe, organied in 197 by the Board of Medieval Studie in Univerity College, Dublin, the idea of an Irih hitoric town atla wa firt publicly dicued following a lecture by Heinz Stoob from Münter on the German town atla project. In June 191 the Council of the Royal Irih Academy agreed to publih the Irih Hitoric Town Atla and the government of the Republic of Ireland ubequently provided fund for the employment of a cartographic editor. The joint editor of the firt four facicle were J.H. Andrew (Department of Geography, Trinity College, Dublin) and Anngret Simm (Department of Geography, Univerity College, Dublin). H.B. Clarke (Department of Medieval Hitory, Univerity College, Dublin) wa appointed a an additional editor in 1990, Raymond Gillepie (Department of Hitory, National Univerity of Ireland Maynooth) in 1994, and Jacinta Prunty (Department of Hitory, National Univerity of Ireland Maynooth) in 200. John Andrew retired a editor and became conultant editor in K.M. Davie wa cartographic editor and project co-ordinator from 191 to On her retirement Sarah Gearty wa appointed to the poition. Angela Murphy became editorial aitant to the project in Angela Byrne wa with the project taff from 2003 to 2010 and Jennifer Moore joined the team in The editorial board ha been complemented by an editorial committee in which the editor have been joined over a period of time by Terry Barry (Department of Medieval Hitory, Trinity College, Dublin), John Bradley (Department of Hitory, National Univerity of Ireland Maynooth), M.J.D. Brand (former Director, Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland), Mary Clark (City Archivit, Dublin City Library and Archive), M.E. Daly (College of Art and Celtic Studie, Univerity College, Dublin), Richard Haworth (formerly of the Department of Geography, Trinity College, Dublin), A.A. Horner (formerly of School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy, Univerity College, Dublin), Richard Kirwan (former Director, Ordnance Survey Ireland), Tomá Ó Carragáin (Department of Archaeology, Univerity College Cork), Philip Robinon (formerly of the Ulter Folk and Tranport Mueum), Geraldine Ruane (Chief Executive, Ordnance Survey Ireland), Katharine Simm (formerly of Department of Medieval Hitory, Trinity College, Dublin), Matthew Stout (Department of Hitory, St Patrick College, Drumcondra) and Kevin Whelan (Univerity of Notre Dame). The atla i indebted to Ordnance Survey Ireland and Land and Property Service (formerly Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland) for practical upport from their repective intitution. Valuable aitance ha alo been received from the taff of the Royal Irih Academy. The editorial board i grateful to the Heritage Council, the Marc Fitch Fund (Oxford) and the Luther I. Replogle Foundation (Wahington D.C.) for on-going upport in the preparation of the atla. The atla ha been planned a a erie of facicle, one or more for each town or city in a election repreenting variou ize-categorie, variou region of the country from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and variou period of origin, growth and change, with ome bia in favour of the medieval period but not excluding the etate town, indutrial town and reort town characteritic of more modern time. Large citie are divided chronologically according to available cartographic ource. The principal map in each facicle i a large-cale (1:2500) repreentation of the town a it i believed to have tood at a period a cloe a poible to 0. The recontruction i baed on the manucript town plan made by the Ordnance Survey in and on the manucript map compiled at the ame time or oon afterward by the General Valuation Office. Ue i alo made of urviving contemporary etate map and, where neceary, of the earliet (133 46) publihed Ordnance Survey map at ix inche to one mile (1:10,560). The recontruction include building, treet, road, path, yard, garden, orchard, park, field and urface watercoure. Contemporary name are ued wherever poible. The bae map on which thee data are aembled i the mot accurate available nineteenth-century town plan, which in mot cae i the one publihed by the Ordnance Survey on a cale of either 1:1056 or 1:500 at ome time during the period A econd map how the town in it mid-nineteenth-century etting at 1:50,000. Thi ha been prepared from the firt (155 95) edition of the one inch to one mile (1:63,360) Ordnance Survey map of Ireland. The third map common to all facicle i a modern Ordnance Survey town plan at 1:5000. A election of facimile map i included, ome with their accompanying reference table. Where poible there are alo growth map and large cale ingle period map recontructing ignificant phae of development before the end of the nineteenth century. Other graphic material include the town armorial bearing, if any, a modern air photograph and facimile of early view. The text accompanying the map comprie an introductory eay, topographical information on the town a a whole and it component part, elected documentary and literary extract where appropriate, and a bibliography. The map and topographical information are derived directly from primary ource and to that extent are le likely to become out of date. But reader may alo expect to be given an interpretation of the ource, and thi i the role of the introductory eay. Each town i decribed in relation to it phyical ite and etting, and it development i reviewed in chronological equence from the beginning of urban life to the end of the nineteenth century, with a brief indication of it twentieth-century hitory. In the cae of large citie, thi i done over a erie of linked part. The eay i intended to deal primarily with the form and layout of the town a expreed in the accompanying map. Individual building may receive attention a topographical entitie, but the atla doe not uurp the function of an archaeological or architectural urvey. In the ame pirit, political and ocio-economic factor are introduced in o far a they eem relevant to an undertanding of the towncape and not a end in themelve. The bibliography lit important item devoted to a ingle town or city for the period, epecially thoe of topographical relevance, and i not necearily confined to work cited in the footnote. Other ource mentioned in the footnote are not eparately tabulated, except where their title have been abbreviated in a way that require explanation. Abbreviation of more general application are lited inide the back cover of each facicle. Grid reference follow the Irih Grid co-ordinate ytem a hown on current paper Ordnance Survey map, and throughout the atla placename are pelt a in the map of Ordnance Survey Ireland or Land and Property Service Northern Ireland. Finally the atla expree the belief that large-cale plan contitute the bet kind of ource material for a comparative analyi of the topography of European town, whether a a tarting point for retropective topographical reearch or a a bai for tudying the change aociated with modern urban expanion. A uch, it i proving ueful not only to tudent and teacher of hitory, geography, archaeology and architecture, but alo to planner, conervationit and local government officer, and thu directly or indirectly to all reident and viitor in the town or citie concerned.
