1 BIG SUR LAND TRUST BUSINESS SPONSORS BSLT is organizing Monterey County s participation in Take It Outside California, a statewide event, promoted by the California Council of Land Trusts. The local event will take place on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Natividad Creek Park in Salinas. This event celebrates parks and open space, highlights the many benefits of outdoor recreation and provides opportunities for people to connect with nature where they live. In the city of Salinas, only 3% of the land is dedicated to parks and the 2.9 acres of park per 1000 people is far below the California state average for other dense urban cities. It is more important than ever to celebrate the spaces that the city currently offers and to advocate for new community parks and open space! BSLT has acquired a 73-acre property in the heart of Salinas, the area known as Carr Lake. Take it Outside provides the perfect platform to begin the process of community engagement and public participation in the design of the next big community green space. We are currently working with several different community organizations on the event programming and logistics. The day will include public live art, a gardening workshop, a skateboard competition, culturally-relevant live theatre performances, live music from youth groups, tabling by various organizations involved in the outdoors and community health, along with other assorted activities. 5 BIG SUR LAND TRUST BUSINESS SPONSORS Big Sur Land Trust is organizing Monterey County s first annual Race for Open Space, a local trail race dedicated to fostering an appreciation of natural spaces in Monterey County. The inaugural event will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Big Sur Land Trust s Marks Ranch property in Salinas, CA. This event celebrates open space, highlights the many benefits of outdoor recreation and provides opportunities for people to connect with nature where they live. Over the course of its 40-year history, the Big Sur Land Trust has acted as steward for over 40,000 acres, nearly 21,000 of which have since been transferred to organizations such as California State Parks and the Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks District. It has also worked to foster a love of the land by organizing and administering children s summer camps for Salinas area residents who may otherwise not have opportunities to connect with nature.
