photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff St Antonius Church Kannenfeldstrasse Basel Karl Moser envisioned a structure that stood flush with the street's building line, with unpainted walls and large stained-glass windows that would fill the interior with light transformed into a maze of colour The church is built entirely of in-situ reinforced concrete and its plan is a simple rectangle of remarkable size: 60 metres by 22 metres; the height also being 22 metres The dimly lit, tunnel-like entrance area is a cleverly staged introit to the church's long, bright interior Eight remarkably slim concrete columns carry a barrel-vault over the nave and a flat roof over the aisles, both of them coffered on structural and acoustic grounds The choir is flat, closed off, and over-furnished; the mosaic cross put up later by Hans Stocker also seems out of scale The opposite side, with the soloists podium and mighty organ, has a grid of fine concrete ribs Floor area/size m² Karl Moser evanc photo: Evan Chakroff Services take place saturdays at 1730 and sundays at 715 and 1000 You can take tram #3 to Burgfelderplatz or #1 and #3 to Kannenfeldplatz 16

photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Mediatheque Villeurbanne Cours Amile Zola Villeurbanne France The idea from the outset was to construct a central element of reference And this corresponds to the necessity the architect feels to find a 'backbone' in every project, so that people entering the building will have a chance to orient themselves It could be a shaft of light or a structural element The idea for the competition was to create a house made of empty space within the solid building, with connecting stairs winding around the void Then, little by little, Botta arrived at the final solution, perhaps less complex, but maybe also better considering the building's relatively small dimensions There are no direct references to illuminist or neoclassical architecture This space was born more of an intuition of light, of static reasoning - but also of agreements with the fire department, who forced the architect to put the tempered glass around the central void 1988 Mario Botta City of Villeurbanne jpmm photo: Jeroen Meijer Take the metro to station Flachet, walk 200 meter to the west 18

photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Hotel de la Region Allée de Platon Montpellier France Marking the end of the Antigone axis, having come right to the east bank of the river Lez, this administrative building was constructed as the seat of Government and the regional Parliament As a building emblematic of the region and the culmination of a major civic axis, it needed to have an easily recognizable monumental form It was therefore conceived as a glass-clad triumphal arch, 50 m in height, with a central opening of 12 m The two pillars of the arch house the vertical circulation and various offices The bridge element accommodates the great hall, laid out on three levels, with a large central window in which the Parliament sits The two columns of the west façade are in fact glazed galleries which provide views out over Antigone and the new axis of the river Lez towards Port Marianne photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown! 1989 Ricardo Bofill Ricardo_Bofill_Taller_de_Arquitectu ra 19

photo: Hacienda photo: Hacienda Lycée Sainte Marie-Lyon Chemin du Couvent La Verpillière France At the initiative of Father Marc Perrot, who believed that education should take place in a beautiful space, Georges Adilon was the architect of many buildings of the Marists Often compared to that of Le Corbusier, his architecture uses the stripped concrete, glass and stainless steel This is a reference in contemporary architecture in Lyon Unprecedented situation Georges Adilon worked forty years collaboratively with management St Marie; nearly twenty years with his daughter Marie Adilon photo: Hacienda 1976 Georges Adilon Sainte Marie Lyon School Hacienda Train Station La Verpillière 20

photo: Shawn Cooper photo: Shawn Cooper Fondation Maeght Contemporary Art Museum Chemin des Gardettes Saint-Paul-de-Vence France The museum which opened in 1964 is a superb modernist light-filled example of the Catalan Josep Lluis Sert's work (He also designed the Miró Foundation Museum in Barcelona amongst others) Painters and sculptors of the day collaborated closely in the realisation of this building by creating monumental works integrated into the building and surrounding environment: the Giacometti courtyard, the Miró labyrinth filled with sculptures and ceramics, mural mosaics by Chagall and Tal-Coat, a pool and stained glass window by Braque, a Bury fountain, etc Josep Lluís Sert ShawnC photo: Shawn Cooper Open every day, without exception: Open everyday without exception October-March: 10 am -1 pm / 2 pm - 6 pm; April-June: 10 am - 6 pm; July-September: 10 am - 7 pm The ticket office closes 30 minutes before closing time (Assuming most people will come from the Cote D'Azur/Nice area) - Head to the town of Saint Paul de Vence As you reach the ton there is a sign for the fondation which directs you up a hill Follow this road and first GO PAST the signed carpark on the main road (it's only an overflow carpark) and follow signs into the Museum as there is a carpark right at the front gate 22

photo: Michael Noordam photo: Michael Noordam Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Rue Chapelle Ronchamp France On a hill, this monumental pilgrimage church 'chapel of our lady of the height' (though on most days more frequented by architectural pilgrims than the intended variety) is a dramatic form with the contrasts of a dark roof, deep windows with coloured glass and the white-washed curved walls of rough masonry Formally and symbolically, this small building is immensely powerful and complex The heaviness of the walls and roof is misleading In Le Corbusier's words: 'The shell has been put on walls which are absurdly but practically thick Inside them however are reinforced concrete columns The shell will rest on these columns but it will not touch the wall A horizontal crack of light 10cm wide will amaze' The place is truly astounding, very impressive photo: Yoshinori Kuwahara 1955 Le Corbusier City of Ronchamp Michael_Noordam Hours for the chapel are 10-16h everyday Tél Ronchamp is a little over an hour's drive west of Basel-Mulhouse, the airport near the French/Swiss/German border From Mulhouse follow the A36 southwest to Belfort, then the N19 west to Ronchamp A steep windy road to the North is signposted to the chapel from the center of Ronchamp village 23

photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Villa Schwob Turque Rue de Doubs la Chaux de Fonds Le Corbusier's design for La Villa Turque was influenced by his travels in Turkey, and it made dramatic use of reinforced concrete Construction costs proved to be far beyond the architect's estimates, and Le Corbusier left for Paris after being sued by his client, watch factory owner Anatole Schwob Today, the villa is owned by Ebel, a watch company whose motto is "The s of Time" Ebel purchased the house in 1986 and invested heavily in its restoration La Villa Turque is now used by Ebel's public relations department and includes several guestrooms for employees and important visitors photo: Jeroen Meijer 1916 Le Corbusier Anatole Schwob jpmm Ebel opens the house to visitors on the first and last Saturdays of each month from 11 am to 4 pm Admission is free Be sure to visit the basement, where you can see an excellent film about the restoration in French, English, German, Italian, or Spanish A 12 minute walk ( 0,8 Km) uphill from the train station 25

photo: Michael Noordam photo: Michael Noordam Monastery of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette Route de la Tourette Eveux France Le Corbusier's last major work in Europe Its program is unusual a complete, self-contained world for a community of studying, silent monks, living a life so austere they are sometimes known as the 'begging brothers' The building has 100 individual cells, communal library, classrooms and refectory, a rooftop cloister and church Many of Le C's long-established practices are here: the pilotis (load-bearing columns) inside the walls freeing the facade for long strip windows, the grassed rooftops and the carefully planned architectural promenade with ramp; but the austerity and spirituality of the monks' life gives a very different outcome Trying to give the monks what men today need most: silence and peacethis monastery does not show off; it is on the inside that it lives" Despite many practical reservations (soundproofing, acoustics and many maintenance issues that are very visible today) one student monk compared his entry into the building to a second entry into religion photo: Michael Noordam 1960 Le Corbusier Dominicans of Lyon Michael_Noordam Though still functioning for a greatly-reduced population of monks, La Tourette has become something of a pilgrimage site for students of architecture Overnight stays can be arranged in the unused cells To get there by car, take the A6 motorway north from Lyon, until the "Limonest" exit (33) Take the N6, then shortly turn left onto the D73 to cut across to the N7 Follow the N7 to L'Arbresle, then follow signposts to Eveux and to the Couvent de La Tourette 26

photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Headquarters Klünenfeldstraße Basel photo: Jeroen Meijer The existing zoning required a building of less than ten meters in height Parking was required at a rate of one car for every three employees on site, including existing uses The building is to house various working groups which require "changeable" office planning in a way which will allow them to demonstrate and experiment with their own furniture lines The offices also become showrooms, so a relatively neutral space was designed for this program element Much research was done to investigate state-of-the-art office space before the project began As a result, "combi office" and "office landscape" types will be accommodated as well as more traditional closed and open offices The strict energy codes of mandate that there be no air-conditioning for offices, so natural ventilation is accommodated by opening windows and the entirely shaded south wall under the large wing shaped canopy Floor area/size m² Gehry Partners Vitra International Ltd jpmm by car: it is situated in a living area, on the E26 (to zurich) take the exit Hagnau, then the birsfelderstrasse, exit Rheinfelderstrasse, left Rheinfelderstrasse, first left on Burenweg > 300M, left then you see the terrain 27

photo: Antoine Stinco photo: Antoine Stinco Maison de la Culture Rue Paul Claudel Grenoble France The Maison de la Culture in Grenoble was designed by André Wogenscky to mark the 1968 Winter Olympics It has long been a symbol, a somewhat isolated object resembling the prow of a ship beached, as it were, in the town In 2004, the building began its new life as a cultural multiplex after six years of reconstruction Antoine Stinco completely revamped stage amenities and routing, while discreetly adding a new wing connected to the old part by two glass footbridges For Stinco it was a matter of "unlocking a building suspended above a green space, without resisting its architecture I did not want to arrive at a vocabulary that opposed this building which symbolizes Grenoble's 'heroic period'", hence the complete absence of lavishness This is a new complex for a city that has always demonstrated a large appetite for culture - put to the test here with a sober, almost too sober setting - which seeks to be neither very rich, nor ostentatiously poor Antoine Stinco City of Grenoble Sophie_Roulet photo: Antoine Stinco 28

photo: Roderick Trompert photo: Roderick Trompert Aula des Cedres Avenue de Cour Lausanne timents-et-infrastructures/location-de-laula-des-cedreshtml The Aula des Cèdres is the work of the internationally renowned architect Jean Tschumi His career was focused around the Lake Geneva region, mainly in the 1950s The Aula des Cèdres was built in 1961 and 1962 and served as a lecture hall for the Ecole Polytechnique et Universitaire de Lausanne Jean Tschumi, the head of architecture at the school, developed this auditorium with François Panchaud, who taught students about reinforced concrete This collaboration between an architect and an engineer, representative of the time, was behind the immense concrete veil that is so characteristic of the building Rectangular in shape, the veil is lifted on both ends to accommodate the high windows that introduce a strong dialogue with the nature in the area while letting in a great deal of light The auditorium itself is an oval-shaped structure located in the middle of the building photo: Roderick Trompert 1961 Jean Tschumi École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne Roderick 36

photo: Andreina Schoeberlein photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Westside shopping mall Riedbachstrasse Bern The Westside project is an urban scale architecture project totalling 15 million sq ft In addition to the 55 shops, 10 restaurants and bars, hotel, multiplex cinema, fun bath with wellness center and housing, this mixed-use program radically reinvents the concept of shopping, entertainment and living Despite its location west of the city, in Brünnen-Bern, Westside is urban in scale Critics, such as David Rogers of the Los Angeles-based Jerde Partnership, have faulted Bern for neglecting to integrate such a shopping center into the city s urban fabric A shopping center on the city s periphery contributes to the disintegration of the city center and leads to a loss of values, he says Defenders of Westside, such as Swiss architect Barbara Holzer, argue that Bern s urban center is not under threat and that the shopping center instead offers new urban spaces photo: Andreina Schoeberlein Daniel Libeskind Neue Brünnen AG, Anton Gäumann, CEO Andreina_Schoeberlein shopping: Mo-Thursday: Fr Sa Sunday: closed Cinemas: Mo-Thursday: Fr Sa Sunday: Every quarter of an hour, you can reach Westside in just eight minutes from Bern main railway station by S-bahn nos S5, S51 and S52 If you take bus no 14 to the terminus Brünnen-Bahnhof, you can also hop off right in front of the main entrance There is also the postbus number 570 that will take you once an hour from Mühleberg to Brünnen-station Read more at

photo: Vitorio Benedetti photo: Vitorio Benedetti Carré d'art Place de la Maison Carree Nîmes France The Carré d'art successfully connects ancient and modern architectures It also provides a powerful catalyst for reinvigorating the social and physical fabric of a city The site faces the Maison Carre, a perfectly preserved Roman temple The challenge was to relate new to the old, but at the same time to create a building that represented its own age with integrity This building not only contains magazines, newspapers and books, but it is also a gallery for painting and sculpture It has nine storeys, half of which is sunk into the ground The lower levels house archive storage and a cinema, while above a roofed courtyard forms the heart of the building, exploiting the transparency and lightness of modern materials to allow natural light to permeate all floors photo: Vitorio Benedetti Foster & Partners City of Nîmes MI_MOA Every day open from 10:00-18:00, except Mondays 38

photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Olympic swimming pool of Montpellier Jacques Cartier Montpellier France Above first floor level, the building is nothing more than a light roof suspended over the two pools From the entrance lobby, the view of the two pools and the sports hall is immediate Visitors, who enter at the highest level of the public seating, are met with a view of the sporting pool below with the leisure pool to its right Spectators can watch competitions from either side of the sporting pool Conceived of as two squares fused into one, although each with its own individual atmosphere, the leisure area and the sporting area are, nonetheless, fully integrated visually, spatially and functionally photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown!
