2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Floor area/size m² Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation Laurenz Foundation MI_MOA The building is ONLY OPEN for the public during exhibitions! 3 photo: Goran Potkonjak photo: Goran Potkonjak Novartis office Fabrikstrasse 6 CH-4002 Basel Before the advent of modern scientific methods in chemistry and pharmacology, it was the alchemists who endeavoured to discover remedies for human ailments The office building Peter Märkli architekten designed for pharmaceutical giant Novartis Pharma recalls alchemy's other enterprise, its attempts to turn base metals into gold: or rather, Märkli has succeeded in maintaining that illusion The anodised aluminium of the loadbearing façades has been coated with a champagne-coloured paint and the air ducts that run across the roof are encased in gold-coloured aluminium sandwich board While such non-designed service elements are often an eyesore, here they look like costly treasures photo: Goran Potkonjak 2006 Peter Märkli Novartis Pharma Kirsten_Hannema The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don't count on it The campus is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 3

6 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber St Jakob Park St Jakobs-Strasse Basel St Jakob Park is the stadium where FC Basel play "Joggeli" as it is nicknamed, has a current capacity of 39'000 seats 's first multi-purpose stadium, was inaugurated in 2001 after just two and half years under construction Situated on the south-eastern edge of the city in extensive park and recreation grounds, the world-renowned Basel architects Herzog & De Meuron have constructed an "experience park", which, with its unique dimension, bold architecture and ultramodern infrastructure, provides the optimum setting for large-scale events It combines a football stadium with shops and restaurants photo: Monique van den Berg Project is public! 2001 Basel United + City of Basel Marloes_Faber Basel United Stadion-Management AG, responsible for the professional marketing of the St Jakob Park, helps to plan and stage events professionally and provide guided tours of the St Jakob Park are offered (to book in advance) It is easy to get there by tram 6

7 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff St Antonius Church Kannenfeldstrasse Basel Karl Moser envisioned a structure that stood flush with the street's building line, with unpainted walls and large stained-glass windows that would fill the interior with light transformed into a maze of colour The church is built entirely of in-situ reinforced concrete and its plan is a simple rectangle of remarkable size: 60 metres by 22 metres; the height also being 22 metres The dimly lit, tunnel-like entrance area is a cleverly staged introit to the church's long, bright interior Eight remarkably slim concrete columns carry a barrel-vault over the nave and a flat roof over the aisles, both of them coffered on structural and acoustic grounds The choir is flat, closed off, and over-furnished; the mosaic cross put up later by Hans Stocker also seems out of scale The opposite side, with the soloists podium and mighty organ, has a grid of fine concrete ribs Project is public! 8 photo: Maarten Thewissen photo: Ryan Taube Musuem Tinguely Grenzacherstrasse Basel Jean Tinguely ( ) grew up in Basel and belonged to the Parisian avant-garde in the 1950s and 60s He stimulated and revolutionized the "static" art world with his kinetic works The Museum's permanent collections present a selection of the artist's machine sculptures, reliefs and drawings from all the periods of his career The Museum also offers a varied and lively programme of temporary shows devoted to Tinguely's fellow artists and contemporaries - Bernhard Luginbühl, Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Klein - and to his models such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, as well as to related subjects such as contemporary kinetic art photo: Ryan Taube Project is public! 9 photo: Ralph Feiner photo: Ralph Feiner Vineyard Estate Gantenbein Im Feld CH-7306 Fläsch This exclusive wine estate is a family run business, situated at the edge of gently sloping vineyards The extension to the vineyard exists out of 3 simple buildings that form a small courtyard 2 existing single storey buildings have been completed by a new structure The basement has 8 mushroom-columns, and forms an extension to the fermentation cellar, which is half sunk in the ground At courtyard level is a hall where the grapes are pressed, and at the top are the rooms for tasting wines It's a pragmatic, yet aesthetically pleasing building The concrete skeleton frame is filled in with bricks which are turned and have open vertical joints Together with the ETH Zurich these wall elements were assembled by industrial robots The open-jointed brickwork gives the facade an image of stacked grapes It provides sun shading and ensured an almost constant temperature for an optimal fermentation process Transparent polycarbonate sheeting provides protection against wind and moisture photo: Ralph Feiner Project is public! 2007 Bearth & Deplazes Martha and Daniel Gantenbein Naomi 9

10 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Central Signal Box Münchensteinerstrasse Basel This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architect s talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night" 1999 Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, Anlagen Management boeboe photo: Nazar Leskiw 10

11 Housing Schwarzpark Gellertstrasse Basel This project contains a great generous public housing because of both their spatial and their material quality Most of them have four bedrooms in a compact container located on one end of an urban park The insertion of the building into the grounds of the park by means of a folded block reduces its visual impact It incorporates various measures that contribute to the saving of energy and sustainable consumption, this without giving up a design that allows for maximum enjoyment of the area photo: Ruedi Walti Floor area/size m² Miller & Maranta Zentralstelle für staatlichen Liegenschaftverkehr aplust 11

14 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw The Picassohaus Brunngässlein Basel The building site is prominently located on Picassoplatz This is a corner lot with, for the most part, six-story building in perimeter block development Distinctive buildings, among them the art museum and the Baloise Insurance Company's free-standing headquarters, are its next-door neighbours The proportioning of the building and the arrangement of each single part is based on a modular systemthe ground floor contains conference rooms and offices as well as access to the underground parking garage The upper floors are reached via a prominent staircase Location of and accessibility to service spaces are organized around a type of core, allowing entry from both sides Single-space offices as well as large open ones are thus possible The high spaces of the 'attic story' are used for conferences, employee's break, and offices The building's facade is rather elegant in dark gray steel photo: Nazar Leskiw Peter Märkli UBS Property Fund Roderick Tram 8 to Aeschenplatz, short walk from there 14

15 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Headquarters Klünenfeldstraße Basel photo: Jeroen Meijer The existing zoning required a building of less than ten meters in height Parking was required at a rate of one car for every three employees on site, including existing uses The building is to house various working groups which require "changeable" office planning in a way which will allow them to demonstrate and experiment with their own furniture lines The offices also become showrooms, so a relatively neutral space was designed for this program element Much research was done to investigate state-of-the-art office space before the project began As a result, "combi office" and "office landscape" types will be accommodated as well as more traditional closed and open offices The strict energy codes of mandate that there be no air-conditioning for offices, so natural ventilation is accommodated by opening windows and the entirely shaded south wall under the large wing shaped canopy Project is public!
