7 photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Vitra Factory Building Charles-Eames-Str Weil am Rhein Germany -building This most recent addition to the VITRA's architecturally distinguished campus, is the first industrial building designed by SANAA It was designed for "Vitrashop" which produces shop fittings and uses this hall primarily for storage and assembly Because the building was required to be of great size and because it is close to a nearby residential area, the architects shaped its floor plan as a slightly deformed circle (with a 160 m diameter) This overall form allows for functional flexibility as well as for a more pleasing visual impression The building is 11 m high, its roof is supported by a grid of steel columns The exterior envelope is made of concrete, insulated and wrapped in undulating elements of acrylic glass, with varying fold widths photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Project is not public! 13 photo: N Bräuning photo: Ryan Taube Beyeler museum Baselstrasse Riehen The elongated building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot of ground situated between a busy main road and a protected area of farmland It combines two contrasting motifs: long, solid walls and a light, apparently floating glass roof All the external walls are clad with red porphyry from Patagonia (Argentina) The building is supported by four 127 metre-long parallel load-bearing walls placed at intervals of about seven metres The two end façades are made of glass and look out over the park On the road side, the museum is completed by a windowless wall that protects the building and on the inside A large glass roof lets daylight into the whole building Unlike conventional top lighting, this roof allows the zenithal daylight to filter into the building s interior in its natural state instead of homogenising it and making it diffuse and milky There are also three systems with artificial light sources that illuminate the rooms when there is insufficient light from outside photo: T Dix Floor area/size m² Lighting designer Renzo Piano Arup Fondation Beyeler Marloes_Faber Museum daily 10 am to 6 pm, on Wednesdays 10 am to 8 pm New: The museum is open on all sundays and holidays The best way to reach the Fondation Beyeler is by tram no 6 (from city center and Badischer Bahnhof station), or directly by train from Basel SBB main station and Badischer Bahnhof, getting off at Riehen (train continues to Zell / Germany) From Riehen stop it is another 5 to 10 minutes walk The museum is located at the main road to the German boarder (to Lorrach) 13
