2 Villa la Roche Square du Docteur-Blanche Paris Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker and collector of avant-garde art Among other things, the house would serve as a private gallery to display La Roche's extensive art collection Built in a private Paris courtyard, the house had major constraints imposed by the site and its zoning restrictions, including a north orientation, existing trees and height and boundary limitations Inside the building, to display the art, an architectural promenade was made, a theme inspired by 's visit to the Acropolis in 1911 and repeated most strikingly in his Carpenter centre for the Visual Arts nearly forty years later The promenade goes up and down staircases, leads you through tight spaces, in-between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a beautifully lit library This idea of a spatial sequence was re-invented by many modern architects, after 1925 Main designer, Pierre Jeanneret Raoul La Roche Michael_Noordam 10 am to 1230 pm to 6 pm (Mondays 130 pm - Fridays 5 pm) Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm Closed : Sundays, Monday mornings and public holidays The villa is open to the public, administered by the Fondation, which is based in the adjoining Villa Jeanneret at 8 square du Docteur-Blanche For reservations please call or visit wwwfondationlecorbusierassofr he villa is ten minutes' walk west of Jasmin metro station line 9 (Jasmin) / liges 9 and 10 (Michel-Ange - Auteuil) Bus : line 52 (La Fontaine - Mozart) / Line PC : (Suchet - Raffet) 2

3 Monastery of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette Route de la Tourette Eveux 's last major work in Europe Its program is unusual a complete, self-contained world for a community of studying, silent monks, living a life so austere they are sometimes known as the 'begging brothers' The building has 100 individual cells, communal library, classrooms and refectory, a rooftop cloister and church Many of Le C's long-established practices are here: the pilotis (load-bearing columns) inside the walls freeing the facade for long strip windows, the grassed rooftops and the carefully planned architectural promenade with ramp; but the austerity and spirituality of the monks' life gives a very different outcome Trying to give the monks what men today need most: silence and peacethis monastery does not show off; it is on the inside that it lives" Despite many practical reservations (soundproofing, acoustics and many maintenance issues that are very visible today) one student monk compared his entry into the building to a second entry into religion 1960 Dominicans of Lyon Michael_Noordam Though still functioning for a greatly-reduced population of monks, La Tourette has become something of a pilgrimage site for students of architecture Overnight stays can be arranged in the unused cells To get there by car, take the A6 motorway north from Lyon, until the "Limonest" exit (33) Take the N6, then shortly turn left onto the D73 to cut across to the N7 Follow the N7 to L'Arbresle, then follow signposts to Eveux and to the Couvent de La Tourette 3

4 Maison de Verre Rue Saint-Guillaume Paris Interior designer Chareau joined efforts with licensed architect Bernard Bijvoet to design what would be part gynological clinic for Dr Dalsace and part private residence for the doctor and his wife, Annie The remarkable Maison de Verre (glass house) was inserted into an existing building and is one of the greatest houses of the International Style, adding materials the movement had never used before in such an extent to create a work of architectural genius -- a structure that is fully functional and fully aesthetic in its simplicity The steel frame allowed for complete freedom of internal space The glass block wall itself, is able to stand alone without a heavy frame breaking its pattern Ventilation through the glass block wall is provided by a series of movable traps A not-so-complicated weight and pulley system opens the window panels, allowing for natural ventilation This unique system causes a minimum of visual impact on the glass facade of the structure Floor area/size m² Main designer, Pierre Chareau Bernard Bijvoet docteur Dalsace Michael_Noordam The house is still inhabited by the grandchild of the original client The Maison de verre is open for a limited number of visits by appointment Group visits for schools of architecture are given priority The visits will be organized on Fridays at 2 and 3:30PM and are limited to a maximum of 10 people per group Language: English Duration: 1,5 hours Costs: 20,- pp for teachers/students; 40,- pp for other visitors For more info and reservations: mdv31@orangefr Métro : 12, Rue du bac 4

5 Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Rue Chapelle Ronchamp On a hill, this monumental pilgrimage church 'chapel of our lady of the height' (though on most days more frequented by architectural pilgrims than the intended variety) is a dramatic form with the contrasts of a dark roof, deep windows with coloured glass and the white-washed curved walls of rough masonry Formally and symbolically, this small building is immensely powerful and complex The heaviness of the walls and roof is misleading In 's words: 'The shell has been put on walls which are absurdly but practically thick Inside them however are reinforced concrete columns The shell will rest on these columns but it will not touch the wall A horizontal crack of light 10cm wide will amaze' The place is truly astounding, very impressive photo: Yoshinori Kuwahara 1955 City of Ronchamp Michael_Noordam Hours for the chapel are 10-16h everyday Tél Ronchamp is a little over an hour's drive west of Basel-Mulhouse, the airport near the French/Swiss/German border From Mulhouse follow the A36 southwest to Belfort, then the N19 west to Ronchamp A steep windy road to the North is signposted to the chapel from the center of Ronchamp village 5

6 Maison de la Culture Route de Saint Just Malmont Firminy The concrete House of Culture was built on a hill, on a former stone quarry The situation contributed to the majesty of the structure The most striking detail of the design is the curved roof The inclined façade resembles an athletic complex The building was conceived directly after the period of constructing the convent of La Tourette, and some similar architectural elements are recognized: the Corbusier theme of the architectural sequence through a series of spaces, and the way rooms are illuminated Together with this Cultural Centre, The nearby church Saint-Pierre and sports stadium form an entire Corbusier complex 1965 Eugène Caudius-Petit, mayor of Firminy Michael_Noordam Firminy has 4 Corbusier buildings in one place Guided tours Monday to Friday start at 2:30 pm from the Maison de la Culture / Espace and take about 3 hours Firminy is about 14 km (9 miiles) from Saint Etienne, in the south of 6

9 photo: Leonardo Noguez photo: Leonardo Noguez Heidi Weber Museum Höschgasse Zurich Switzerland The Heidi Weber Museum reflects the harmonic unity of Le Corbusier's architecture, sculptures, paintings, furniture designs and his writings which is unique and possibly the only one such existing structure in the world: a total work of art Located on the wooded shores of Lake Zurich, the last building designed by, synthesizes Corbusier's genius Yet it marks a radical change of his achievement of using concrete and stone so poetically He to put in practice the construction system based on cubic units of 226 meters each side, created according to the Modulor measures He framed his final masterpiece in steel and glass and thus created a signpost for the future made great use of prefabricated steel elements together with multi-coloured enamelled plates fitted to the central core, and above the complex he designed a 'free-floating' roof to keep the house protected from both the rain and the sun (text by Arch Leonardo Noguez) photo: Liesa Siegelmann Mrs Heidi Weber JMMM From July to September on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5 pm for updates take Tram 2 along Seefeld Strasse to Hoeschgasse Walk along Hoeschgasse towards the lake (that's to the right if you're coming from the town center) The pavilion is at the end of the road on the left, within the Zürichhorn park 9

10 photo: David Uró i Vilanova photo: David Uró i Vilanova Nemausus Avenue du Général Leclerc Nîmes In peripheral surroundings of modest houses, appears an alternative of "housing" in two parallel blocks, with maximum flexibility and typological variety using "modular" apartments (studio, one-room, double height, duplex) Between blocks there are the rest of a "arboretum" as public park on the ground floor In the half-buried plant is the parking The access to the blocks is by outside stairs and metallic footbridges, that lead to the 114 houses Trying to reduce the communitarian spaces, the façades (South) can be completely opened with a system of accordion doors The terrace can be completely integrated with the living, the apartment is opened to light and to the Mediterranean climate in Nimes The construction system uses industrial materials and prefabricated (thin walls of concrete and aluminium) to reduce the costs, and to construct high quality apartments To lower the price, with vocation to be: "the democratic aspect" photo: David Uró i Vilanova Project is not public! 11 photo: Ana Luzia Raposo photo: Ana Luzia Raposo Casa das Mudas Arts Centre Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas Calheta Portugal -paulo-david-5254html The Arts Centre is a landscape mark, placed strategically on the top of the cliff that abruptly terminates over the Atlantic Ocean Calheta is a district with large extension, located on the west coastline of the island Madeira It is situated in the middle of the deepest point of a valley and surrounded by high mountains The core Is developed through a north-south longitudinal axis, and it's extensions match the topographic construction limits This buried and sculpted core promotes an underground experience; the outer spaces, subtracted from the original conceptual core are characterized by the texture and colour of their pavements, which reflect the particular island's Skylight The centre was built in black basalt stone, as an approach to the volcanic landscape's nature Being a local and profuse material, it's colour and texture brings continuity and support to the building's merging in the landscape, thus enhancing the value of the landscape and it's nature photo: Augusto Esteves Floor area/size m² Paulo David Casa Cultural da Calheta Joao_Sousa see also Calheta is located on the west side of the island Madeira, about 20 minutes away from Funchal The centre has a restaurant located in one of the complex s turning points, and as all of the other functions in the Centre, it works autonomously, and has public free access 11

12 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Weissenhofsiedlung Rathenaustraße Stuttgart Germany The Weissenhofsiedlung is one of the most significant landmarks left by the movement known as "Neues Bauen" The development was erected in 1927 as a residential building exhibition arranged by the City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund Working under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, seventeen architects created an exemplary residential scheme for modern urban residents The architects participating in the exhibition - including, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Scharoun and others - were known at that time only in those circles devoted to the international avantgarde Today they are amongst the most notable masters of modern architecture To be found at the Weissenhof development are numerous homes built by these architects, all in close proximity one to another And that's what makes this residential development unique around the world photo: HJ Imhoff 1927 Main designer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Hans Scharoun JJP Oud Mart Stam Peter Behrens City of Stuttgart and the Deutscher Werkbund HJI The neighbourhood is still "in use" and so open 24hrs a day The house by is nowadays a museum, check the website for opening hours With U-bahn go to station "Killesberg Messe", from there it's just a short walk 12

13 photo: Viktor Ramos photo: Viktor Ramos Villa Savoye Rue de Villiers Poissy The Villa Savoye, also called "Les Heures Claires" in Poissy, which was built by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, and Pierre Jeanneret between 1928 and 1931, is considered as one of his major works, and even as one of the masterpieces of 20th century architecture The villa was designed for a rich insurer, Mr Savoye, and was the result of several years of formal research which revolutionised the traditional codes of residential architecture The building was constructed in the form of a white parallelepiped with a smooth exterior surface punctuated by a row of windows It is supported by thin pillars and topped by a roof-terrace The house sits in the middle of a field, a prime example of a new architectural vision photo: Viktor Ramos 1931 Main designer, Pierre Jeanneret Mr Savoye boeboe (subject to change!)
