1 Private guided tours General Information We offer private tours for groups in German, English and French. Tours in Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish and Chinese are also available upon request. Maximum group size is 30 persons, unless otherwise indicated. On weekends and holidays an additional fee of or per tour (depending on type) is charged. For tours of the current exhibition or in the Vitra Schaudepot after 6 pm we charge an additional fee of Payment in cash or by credit card; invoices are issued for amounts upwards of Reservations for private tours must be made at least three weeks in advance. 2 Vitra Design Museum Group Visits The Vitra Design Museum mounts temporary exhibitions in its main building. Smaller parallel shows are presented in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery, a neighbouring exhibition space. Museum hours: daily 10 am 6 pm Admission: 9.00 per person for groups of 10 or more, free for children under 12 Guided tours of the current exhibition Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design The designer, author, and design activist Victor J. Papanek ( ) anticipated an understanding of design as a tool for political change and social good that is more relevant today than ever. The guided tour of this first Papanek retrospective highlights historic as well as contemporary works form the fields of social and critical design and poses the question if design truly has the power to change the world., plus admission 9.00 Maximum group size: 20 persons 2

3 Vitra Schaudepot Group visits The Vitra Schaudepot originated from the intention of making the growing collection of the Vitra Design Museum visible and accessible to visitors. In the building by Herzog & De Meuron approximately 400 key collection pieces are on display. The Schaudepot is complemented by a temporary exhibition space, where displays relating to various topics and focal points of the collection are shown. Through windows, the visitor can gain insights into further collection holdings. Opening hours: daily 10 am 6 pm Admission: 6.00 per person for groups of 10 or more, free for children under 12 Guided tours of the Vitra Schaudepot Highlights from the collection The guided tour focusses on the highlights from the Vitra Design Museum collection, including rare and singular pieces from designers such as Gerrit Rietveld, Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames or Ettore Sottsass, but also less well-known or anonymous designs, rarities, prototypes and test models. The tour offers the visitor a unique possibility to experience the history of modern furniture design from its beginnings in the 19 th century up to the present day in all its facets from stylistic and technical innovations to the societal changes reflected in the objects., plus admission Maximum group size: 15 persons Focus: Eames Materials and Design Process Today many furnishings created by Charles and Ray Eames are revered as design icons, such as the Eames Plastic Chairs, the Aluminium Chair or the legendary Lounge Chair. The focus tour gives insight into the material innovations and design processes of the Eames, illustrated via select examples from the collection and Charles Eames studio., plus admission Maximum group size: 15 persons 3

4 Vitra Campus Vitra Campus Architecture Tour This comprehensive tour of the Vitra Campus provides an overview of the history of the Vitra company and the evolution of the company premises in Weil, placing special emphasis on the Fire Station designed by Zaha Hadid, the Conference Pavilion by Tadao Ando and the Schaudepot by Herzog & de Meuron. On the way, participants learn about the factory buildings designed by Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Álvaro Siza and SANAA, as well as the dome after Richard Buckminster Fuller and Jean Prouvé's petrol station. The VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron is visible from different perspectives during the tour and can be visited on an individual basis. Duration: approx. 120 minutes Tour fee: , reduced Fire Station / Zaha Hadid The guided tour of the Fire Station by Zaha Hadid, her first executed building design, includes not only a detailed viewing of both the exterior and interior of the structure, but also other parts of the Vitra Campus, such as the factory buildings designed by Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw and Álvaro Siza as well as the dome after Richard Buckminster Fuller and Jean Prouvé's petrol station. An introduction to the history of the Vitra company and the development of the campus is also included in this tour. Japanese Architects / SANAA and Tadao Ando This guided tour focuses on the origins and conceptual design of the buildings by SANAA and Tadao Ando. The production hall designed by the Japanese architecture firm SANAA comprises two semicircular concrete shells joined into a roughly rounded overall shape. Undulating panels are hung like a curtain around the entire structure, creating an unusual and intriguing facade. The tour also gives participants an opportunity to view the interiors of both buildings; the Conference Pavilion by Tadao Ando and the production facility by SANAA. 4

5 Project Vitra: Design, Culture, Industry The tour provides an overview of the company s history and the development of the Vitra Campus in Weil with over a dozen buildings by world-renowned architects. Its architectural diversity mirrors the Vitra product range, which is shaped by the distinct signatures of many different designers. This introductory presentation offers a chance to find out more about Vitra s unique industrial and corporate culture as well as its distinctive mix of cultural and commercial activities a synthesis represented by the Vitra Design Museum and the VitraHaus. Production Take a look behind the scenes of the production on the Vitra Campus. Experience different steps of the manufacturing process of the Aluminium Chair on a guided tour through the production hall by Frank Gehry. The chair developed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 is considered one of the greatest furniture designs of the 20th century. Vitra has been producing this timeless classic over a period of decades in the same superior quality. Find out more about its history as well as the significance of innovation, quality and sustainability at Vitra. The tour is followed by an introduction to Vitra s test centre. Only available: Mo Fr 10 am 3 pm; children over 14 years Maximum group size: 10 persons Citizen Office The Citizen Office tour provides insights into the exemplary design of an open space office of the Vitra company. 6 Walk «24 Stops» Rehberger-Weg Covering a linear distance of six kilometres, the Rehberger-Weg links two countries, two municipalities, two cultural institutions and countless stories. The path runs between Weil am Rhein and Riehen, between the Fondation Beyeler and the Vitra Campus. Guided by «24 Stops», 24 waymarkers created by the artist Tobias Rehberger, walkers can explore a uniquely diverse natural and cultural landscape. Get to know the Rehberger-Weg with an introduction about the artist, a presentation of individual objects and information about the partners and the surrounding landscape. The tour starts at the Vitra Campus and ends at the Fondation Beyeler. Duration: approx. 120 minutes Tour Fee: 300,00, no Weekend and holiday surcharge It is possible to combine some of the guided tours listed here. Please note that only guides affiliated with the Vitra Design Museum are authorized to conduct tours in the Vitra Design Museum, in the Vitra Schaudepot and on the Vitra Campus. Please also be aware that the buildings presented during the guided tours are in use. For this reason, there may be occasional restrictions with regard to viewing access.
