3 Villa la Roche Square du Docteur-Blanche Paris Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker and collector of avant-garde art Among other things, the house would serve as a private gallery to display La Roche's extensive art collection Built in a private Paris courtyard, the house had major constraints imposed by the site and its zoning restrictions, including a north orientation, existing trees and height and boundary limitations Inside the building, to display the art, an architectural promenade was made, a theme inspired by 's visit to the Acropolis in 1911 and repeated most strikingly in his Carpenter centre for the Visual Arts nearly forty years later The promenade goes up and down staircases, leads you through tight spaces, in-between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a beautifully lit library This idea of a spatial sequence was re-invented by many modern architects, after 1925 Main designer, Pierre Jeanneret Raoul La Roche Michael_Noordam 10 am to 1230 pm to 6 pm (Mondays 130 pm - Fridays 5 pm) Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm Closed : Sundays, Monday mornings and public holidays The villa is open to the public, administered by the Fondation, which is based in the adjoining Villa Jeanneret at 8 square du Docteur-Blanche For reservations please call or visit wwwfondationlecorbusierassofr he villa is ten minutes' walk west of Jasmin metro station line 9 (Jasmin) / liges 9 and 10 (Michel-Ange - Auteuil) Bus : line 52 (La Fontaine - Mozart) / Line PC : (Suchet - Raffet) 3

4 Monastery of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette Route de la Tourette Eveux 's last major work in Europe Its program is unusual a complete, self-contained world for a community of studying, silent monks, living a life so austere they are sometimes known as the 'begging brothers' The building has 100 individual cells, communal library, classrooms and refectory, a rooftop cloister and church Many of Le C's long-established practices are here: the pilotis (load-bearing columns) inside the walls freeing the facade for long strip windows, the grassed rooftops and the carefully planned architectural promenade with ramp; but the austerity and spirituality of the monks' life gives a very different outcome Trying to give the monks what men today need most: silence and peacethis monastery does not show off; it is on the inside that it lives" Despite many practical reservations (soundproofing, acoustics and many maintenance issues that are very visible today) one student monk compared his entry into the building to a second entry into religion 1960 Dominicans of Lyon Michael_Noordam Though still functioning for a greatly-reduced population of monks, La Tourette has become something of a pilgrimage site for students of architecture Overnight stays can be arranged in the unused cells To get there by car, take the A6 motorway north from Lyon, until the "Limonest" exit (33) Take the N6, then shortly turn left onto the D73 to cut across to the N7 Follow the N7 to L'Arbresle, then follow signposts to Eveux and to the Couvent de La Tourette 4

5 Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Rue Chapelle Ronchamp On a hill, this monumental pilgrimage church 'chapel of our lady of the height' (though on most days more frequented by architectural pilgrims than the intended variety) is a dramatic form with the contrasts of a dark roof, deep windows with coloured glass and the white-washed curved walls of rough masonry Formally and symbolically, this small building is immensely powerful and complex The heaviness of the walls and roof is misleading In 's words: 'The shell has been put on walls which are absurdly but practically thick Inside them however are reinforced concrete columns The shell will rest on these columns but it will not touch the wall A horizontal crack of light 10cm wide will amaze' The place is truly astounding, very impressive photo: Yoshinori Kuwahara 1955 City of Ronchamp Michael_Noordam Hours for the chapel are 10-16h everyday Tél Ronchamp is a little over an hour's drive west of Basel-Mulhouse, the airport near the French/Swiss/German border From Mulhouse follow the A36 southwest to Belfort, then the N19 west to Ronchamp A steep windy road to the North is signposted to the chapel from the center of Ronchamp village 5

6 Maison de la Culture Route de Saint Just Malmont Firminy The concrete House of Culture was built on a hill, on a former stone quarry The situation contributed to the majesty of the structure The most striking detail of the design is the curved roof The inclined façade resembles an athletic complex The building was conceived directly after the period of constructing the convent of La Tourette, and some similar architectural elements are recognized: the Corbusier theme of the architectural sequence through a series of spaces, and the way rooms are illuminated Together with this Cultural Centre, The nearby church Saint-Pierre and sports stadium form an entire Corbusier complex 1965 Eugène Caudius-Petit, mayor of Firminy Michael_Noordam Firminy has 4 Corbusier buildings in one place Guided tours Monday to Friday start at 2:30 pm from the Maison de la Culture / Espace and take about 3 hours Firminy is about 14 km (9 miiles) from Saint Etienne, in the south of 6

10 photo: Viktor Ramos photo: Viktor Ramos Villa Savoye Rue de Villiers Poissy The Villa Savoye, also called "Les Heures Claires" in Poissy, which was built by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, and Pierre Jeanneret between 1928 and 1931, is considered as one of his major works, and even as one of the masterpieces of 20th century architecture The villa was designed for a rich insurer, Mr Savoye, and was the result of several years of formal research which revolutionised the traditional codes of residential architecture The building was constructed in the form of a white parallelepiped with a smooth exterior surface punctuated by a row of windows It is supported by thin pillars and topped by a roof-terrace The house sits in the middle of a field, a prime example of a new architectural vision photo: Viktor Ramos 1931 Main designer, Pierre Jeanneret Mr Savoye boeboe (subject to change!) 13 Saint-Pierre de Firminy Church Rue des Noyers Firminy Construction works on this church by in the French city of Firminy were stopped in the 1970's, with only the foundations and a base square built Due to local political conflicts the project remained stalled from 1975 to 2003, when the local government declared the mouldering concrete ruin an 'architectural heritage' and financed its completion Le Corbusier's former apprentice José Oubrerie, who worked initially on the scheme in his atelier, finished the church in 2006 Since there were no building plans left, he had to work with old pictures, models and sketches 2006 Main designer, José Oubrerie City of Firminy goa From Lyon: take autoroute Lyon - Saint-Etienne - Le Puy From Clermont Ferrand: take the autoroute in the direction of Saint-Etienne to Firminy - Le Puy By train: take the Lyon Saint-Etienne - Firminy line 13

15 Pavillon Suisse Boulevard Jourdan Paris Cité universitaire was founded in 1921 to provide accommodation and support for foreign students in Paris, with a number of residential pavilions endowed by different national communities The pavilion adheres to 's 'five points of architecture', but with a number of developments since the Villa Savoye The free façade and horizontal window have become a continuous glazed curtain wall, on the south side of the building (above) The pilotis have developed from thin columns to six massive reinforced concrete 'dog-bones' or 'thighs' with their characteristic figure-of-eight cross section to withstand winds While the client accepted the student rooms being raised in mid air, the public spaces were required to be on the ground The plan accommodates them in a separate block sitting on the earth, its curvaceous form contrasting with the simple slab of the student accommodation (text from wwwgalinskycom) 1930, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner goa Committee of Swiss Universities & Station RER B: Cité Universitaire Bus: 67, 21 and T3 15

17 Cité de Refuge Rue Cantagrel Paris The Salvation Army Refuge in Paris was 's first opportunity to create accommodation for the urban poor The compact site provided the chance for a radical approach both to bringing in light and space and to laying out the entrance halls to accommodate the Salvation Army's reception process The core of 's design was the dormitory slab with a sheer glass curtain wall Critical to the success of this south-facing glass wall was to have been a technologically ambitious system of double glazing and air conditioning ('respiration exacte') These were never built as intended, and the sheer skin of the wall was lost to 's trademark brises soleils later on in an attempt to prevent the inhabitants from overheating In the spirit of the free plan, took the entrance hall components out of the dormitory block, constructing a geometric pathway through separate reception buildings outside (text from wwwgalinskycom) 1929, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner goa Armée du Salut (Salvation Army) Telephone: Take the RER to Bibliothèque François Mitterand, and choose the Rue du Chevalaret exit Walk south along Rue du Chevalaret, and at the first junction turn backwards right up rue Cantagrel The Refuge is a few meters up on your right 17

23 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Ricola Europe Mulhouse Rue de l'ill Mulhouse 9BB33A63B4A4B3 This is a packing and distribution building for Ricola Europe in Mulhouse-Brunstatt When the Swiss decided against joining the EU economic area in a referendum held in 1992, it became necessary for Ricola to set up a sales company in the EU and to build a hall for Ricola Europe in neighbouring This hall was built in a few months in 1995 It is situated on the periphery of Mulhouse, on the west bank of the Rhine-Rhône Canal, facing Brunstatt It is a simple building, 60 m long, 30 m wide an 8 m high The roof projects outwards and slightly upwards for 8 m on each of the two long sides It creates large, protected areas, those facing into the yard being used for loading and unloading the trucks, and those facing a small park for rest periods Here, the roof is of a material which allows the light through, so that these areas are bathed in soft light (text from website Ricola) photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 1995 Herzog and De Meuron Ricola HelleBeelden 23
