3 photo: Alessandro Conti photo: Alessandro Conti School Churwalden Witiwäg Churwalden Very early work by, this addition to a school complex consist of two new classrooms buildings and a gymnasium, built out of concrete bricks The classrooms develop in two levels: entrance on a main corridor with a first working-space, individual staircase leading to the upper floor, that is the main teaching space, opening on a garden in the back From the outside, the gym looks as a 3-naves church; the interior reveals that the roof of the shape is given by the structure, running longitudinal to the gym photo: Alessandro Conti Project is not public! 1982 alekf By appointment 3

4 photo: Ralph Kent photo: Ralph Kent Atelier Zumthor Suesswinggel Haldenstein This is 's studio in the small village of Haldenstein, just outside of Chur in the Graubunden region of The first studio was built in 1986, with the concrete extension adjacent to his private family home - added in 2005 Project is not public! 1986 jrhartley photo: Ralph Kent The area is not fenced off, but your attention is drawn to a small plaque near the door of the concrete atelier extension which reminds people that this is 's family home and to respect his privacy Park in the centre of Haldenstein and wander up north, you will pass the Zumthor atelier 4

7 photo: Wilfried Dechau photo: Wilfried Dechau Valserrheinbrucke Valléestrasse 7132 Vals Conzett's Valserrheinbrücke in the small village of Vals, is a very recent work and was inaugurated in the summer of 2010 It's an asymmetrical, stone-clad, concrete bridge that replaced an earlier steel structure Simple and elegant in design, it's clearly contemporary; however, at the same time, it seems to have spanned the river for centuries It's an impression enhanced by the use of the traditional Vals stone, thin vertical slabs of which fan out across the bridge With high walls enclosing the car or pedestrian, this is a bridge built to protect and to withstand the force of rising waters below photo: Wilfried Dechau Project is public! 2009 Conzett Bronzini Gartmann AG Grondonaudart 24h/24h 7d/7d 7

11 photo: Heinrich Helfenstein photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Chasa RTR Masanserstrasse Chur The local Radio e Televisiun Ramantscha (RTR) is the main occupant of this mighty six-storey angled structure, which completes a larger architectural quadrangle at the entrance to Chur's old city centre What is remarkable is that despite its expressive and incisive form, the building steps back and puts itself and its presentation at the service of the urban space For the observant viewer the almost banal looking window grid has a few surprises in store It is made of concrete, poured in one piece and subsequently bush-hammered, which is to say rough-hewn with a hammer and chisel - a process that exposes the concrete's main constituent, in this case Rhine gravel The monolithic effect of the façade has its significance: instead of a stuck-on 'outer skin' it becomes a massive, five-storey-high, load-bearing structure, resting on only three supports towards the square and street This static tour de force turns the heftily protruding mass into a light-footed elephant photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Project is not public! 2006 Client Staufer & Hasler Architekten Chur Municipality + SRG 'idée suisse' Bern Axel_Simon 11

12 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Church San Benedetg Caplutta Sogn Benedetg Sumvitg This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the building on a steep slope The church has a wooden construction and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips, similar to the locally build houses The building is very carefully detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind the concrete stairs of the entrance) The setting is wonderful Project is public! 1988 Client City of Sumvitg Marloes_Faber photo: Marloes Faber You can visit the church daily apart from Sunday Take the car to Sumvitg in the canton of Graubünden In this village is one road up to San Benedigt (different ways to write) It's about a km tough climbing for the car In San Benedigt it is easy to find your way to the church 12

13 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Shelters for Roman Archaeological Site Seilerbahnweg Chur Protective housing for the remains of the foundations of three Roman Buildings (which one of those only a corner is visible) This protective casing for the archaeological finds was conceived as a kind of abstract reconstruction of the Roman volumes: a lightweight framework for walls made of timer lamella which admit light and air exactly follows the Roman outer walls, thus producing a package-like effect which give a visible form to location of the Roman buildings in today's city landscape photo: João Morgado Project is public!
