3 Kunstmuseum Basel St Alban-Graben Basel The Kunstmuseum Basel has undergone a major transformation Across Dufourstrasse, facing the Main Building and connected to it on the basement level, an exhibition building has been built that satisfies the highest contemporary standards for the presentation of art Designed by the renowned Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein, the new building is another architectonic highlight in the Basel cityscape Project is public! 4 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! 5 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Viktor Ramos Institute for Hospital Pharmaceuticals Spitalstrasse Basel The Hospital Pharmacie (in German: Institut für Spitalpharmazie) houses offices, labs and production The building is placed on the Rossetti-grounds, and presents itself to the street with a green monumental shield The building marks the entrance to the city, from the Spital-side The position of the elevator, stairs and entrance side for services was determined by the existing building from the 1960 s The façade is made with glass, covered by a Chromogenic colour print If you come close, you can see the structure of the print on the green, semi transparent building surface photo: Viktor Ramos Project is not public! 6 photo: Goran Potkonjak photo: Goran Potkonjak Novartis office Fabrikstrasse 6 CH-4002 Basel Before the advent of modern scientific methods in chemistry and pharmacology, it was the alchemists who endeavoured to discover remedies for human ailments The office building Peter Märkli architekten designed for pharmaceutical giant Novartis Pharma recalls alchemy's other enterprise, its attempts to turn base metals into gold: or rather, Märkli has succeeded in maintaining that illusion The anodised aluminium of the loadbearing façades has been coated with a champagne-coloured paint and the air ducts that run across the roof are encased in gold-coloured aluminium sandwich board While such non-designed service elements are often an eyesore, here they look like costly treasures photo: Goran Potkonjak Project is not public! 2006 Peter Märkli Novartis Pharma Kirsten_Hannema The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don't count on it The campus is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 6

10 Central Signal Box Münchensteinerstrasse Basel This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architect s talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night" Project is not public! 1999 Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, Anlagen Management boeboe 10

11 photo: Evan Chakroff Elsässertor II Centralbahnstrasse Basel This commercial and office building next to Basel's main train station sits between the train tracks and the Centralbahnstrasse, a major thoroughfare The façades along the building's length (facing the street and the tracks) consist of floor-height glass panels tilted at various angles, giving off a fractured reflection of the surrounding historic context The shorter sides of the building are indented to allow for open public space These façades are a double-skin, with the outer layer of glass screen-printed with a colored dot pattern (red on one side, blue on the other) This gives a soft colored glow to the exterior, but (unlike tinted glass) allows clear daylight into the office interior Project is public! 2005 evanc 11

15 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Headquarters Klünenfeldstraße Basel photo: Jeroen Meijer The existing zoning required a building of less than ten meters in height Parking was required at a rate of one car for every three employees on site, including existing uses The building is to house various working groups which require "changeable" office planning in a way which will allow them to demonstrate and experiment with their own furniture lines The offices also become showrooms, so a relatively neutral space was designed for this program element Much research was done to investigate state-of-the-art office space before the project began As a result, "combi office" and "office landscape" types will be accommodated as well as more traditional closed and open offices The strict energy codes of mandate that there be no air-conditioning for offices, so natural ventilation is accommodated by opening windows and the entirely shaded south wall under the large wing shaped canopy Project is public! 16 The Picassohaus Brunngässlein Basel The building site is prominently located on Picassoplatz This is a corner lot with, for the most part, six-story building in perimeter block development Distinctive buildings, among them the art museum and the Baloise Insurance Company's free-standing headquarters, are its next-door neighbours The proportioning of the building and the arrangement of each single part is based on a modular systemthe ground floor contains conference rooms and offices as well as access to the underground parking garage The upper floors are reached via a prominent staircase Location of and accessibility to service spaces are organized around a type of core, allowing entry from both sides Single-space offices as well as large open ones are thus possible The high spaces of the 'attic story' are used for conferences, employee's break, and offices The building's facade is rather elegant in dark gray steel Project is not public! 17 photo: M Spiluttini photo: M Spiluttini Wohnhaus Müller Frobenstrasse Basel Through an exterior load-bearing structure, an open floor plan is achieved; this generates a column-free space that in turn allows free partitioning Various dwelling types, from studio apartments to and 5 room apartments, to maisonettes, emerge from this configuration The deep structural layer fronting the street creates a semi-private space, which defines the building as a dwelling Facing the courtyard, each apartment has a generous balcony The concept of a dual architectural order comes from the observation of the horizon, which expresses the division between ground and sky This resulting dichotomy could also be applied to the architectural system Here, the horizon is expressed in the essentially structure - free middle level, a consequence of the five-storey building A two-storey beam carries the upper floors to the cross walls on either side photo: M Spiluttini Project is not public! 18 photo: M Spiluttini photo: M Spiluttini University Hospital Basel Spitalstrasse Basel The additional space, which is needed for a new surgery department and the Women's Clinic, is understood as a continuation of the existing building typology The new square structure is based on a large-scale concentric composition that allows flexible use of space The outpatient area of the Women's Clinic, the surgery department and the delivery rooms are variations of the same basic structure In the floor plans, new types of surgery and delivery departments are developed Through the choice of lighting from the facade and from the centre all the rooms receive natural light, despite their depth The exterior façade satisfies the complex requirements in relation to aesthetics, spatial and light quality, freedom from glare, protection of privacy, energy criteria and structural-physical criteria Harmony between the old and new façades is achieved by adopting the existing order of storeys, proportions, and load-bearing structure that is readable in the façade photo: M Spiluttini Project is public! 21 photo: Tim Smits Südpark Güterstrasse 4053 Basel Südpark is located near the main Railway Station Basel SBB The total ground floor level is designed to accommodate shops (since August 2011 the Swiss Supermarket Coop is settled in 70% of the ground floor area) The upper floors are designed around the first floor's enclosed garden The lower part (4 floors) in the south-west side of the volume accommodates several office spaces The higher part (9 floors) at the north-east side of the volume accommodates 100 apartments for elderly people, an elderly home with 28 beds and an internal restaurant The inner yard is part of the elderly house The façade of the whole building exists of a silver broom texture The tetris like windows on the north, east and west façade make it hard to read the floor plan from the outside The south façade is a spread of different sizes of windows at apparent places Project is public! 22 Museum der Kulturen Münsterplatz Basel Museum of Ethnology, located right in the heart of Basel's old town, has been renovated and extended so as to include new exhibition space on the top of an already existing building This addition is crowned by an impressive, irregularly folded, roof clad in dark green ceramic tiles (concave, convex and flat) Cantilevered from the rest of the building, the new structure provides support for specially devised plant holders that create a curtain of hanging greenery Access to the museum is through a courtyard that descends gently toward the reception area An open staircase leads to three refurbished exhibition floors and culminates in the column-free space of the new roof addition Project is public! 25 Roche Building 1 Grenzacherstrasse Basel Building 1 is the tallest and most distinctive building on the Roche site in Basel, marking a progression in the development plan that has emerged in logical steps commensurate with the organic growth of the corporation out of the original Hoffmann-La Roche AG industrial complex The new building is situated in the southern part of the Roche grounds, alongside Building 52, which is currently the highest structure In designing the 178m building, the main focus was on developing a highrise typology that visualises and fosters the internal organisation and communication within the various departments Project is public! 26 Roche Pharma Research Building Grenzacherstrasse Basel The new building has replaced an antiquated one on the company's premises The nine-storey-high research headquarters adhere to the typical structure of open galleries, used as emergency escape routes and service zones The façade in back is completely flat, smooth and glazed throughout Offices and laboratories as well as larger public areas, including a five-storey library, an auditorium and a café are housed behind this façade of structural glazing The different uses are visible from the outside through differences in depth and lighting, but also through the distinctive nature of the shades The shades play an important role in the design of the building, lending its otherwise crystalline appearance a softness of contour Project is public! 2010 Nazar 26

27 Roche Building 97 Wettsteinallee Basel Building 97 is the first element in the renewal of the site along Wettsteinallee The architectural language expressed in the new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron is related to the existing buildings on Wettsteinallee, with a clear, compact and well-structured core and shell, ribbon windows and white parapets Project is not public! 2014 Nazar 27

28 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Novartis Asklepios 8 Voltastrasse Basel Asklepios 8 consists of two cubes of almost the same height, placed on top of each other One is six-story high and 235 m tall, corresponding to the height of the neighbouring buildings as defined by the masterplan The cube on top has seven stories, to compensate the perspectival foreshortening when looking at the building from below or a distance Between the two cubes, a high open space provides a spacious lounge for a wide spectrum of activities, events, working situations, seminars, etc Project is not public! 2016 Nazar 28

30 Roche Building 95 Grenzacherstrasse Basel The new Biotechnology Production Centre at Roche Basel is housed in Building 95, a new, purpose-built structure on the Grenzacherstrasse The new building is 40 metres tall, with two basement levels and eight stories Its footprint is roughly the same as that of the building that used to occupy the site Project is public! 2012 Nazar 30
