2 photo: Rafael Vargas photo: Rafael Vargas Ikea Restaurant Portal de Castilla Vitoria-Gasteiz To conceptualize the interior decoration of the Ikea Restaurant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Studio Mariscal imagined it as a place set in farmhouse on the top of a small hill, surrounded by a forest of beech and oak trees The fact is that Ikea is like a fairy story, which is in the middle of a forest of buildings After the reform, the forest is experienced inside Oak and other local woods share the area with warm stone and granite Unpolished wood and stone, leaving the grains and knots, the cut of the saw on view to give it a primitive sensation, where formal imperfection is simply a quality of the material photo: Rafael Vargas Project is public! 2006 Javier Mariscal To reserve for diner call

3 photo: Cesar San Millan photo: Cesar San Millan Vital Building Paseo de la Biosfera Vitoria-Gasteiz &apdo=2#uno photo: Cesar San Millan This is the headquarters for the local savings bank The building reproduces the scale of the surrounding small woods, a park of the Natura 2000 networking programme The floor plan has a chromosome shape with four arms The structural concept is based on pairs of exterior metal supports, clad in stainless steel composite panels One of the arms has been conceived as a 26 metre cantilever In this case the concept changes and the pairs do not have any structural function A double height hall located in the heart of the building has its two façades enclosed by a work of art They have been constructed with bright red polyurethane panels with a manually painted biological pattern The idea is to identify the building as a live organism in motion A black skin made of glass protects the inhabited spaces behind the stainless steel pairs Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Mozas Aguirre arquitectos NB35 Caja Vital Kutxa moag The building is located in the northeast area of Vitoria-Gasteiz, near Pabellon Buesa Arena on Portal de Zurbano & Salburua park 3

4 Electric Ramps at the Old Centre Cantón de la Soledad Vitoria-Gasteiz This project came about from an idea competition organized by the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz The programme contemplates the creation of covered mechanical ramps, four sections in Cantón de la Soledad and three sections in Cantón de San Francisco Javier The decision to cover the ramps allows a better guaranteed use, given the extreme winter conditions in the city The covering will be both complex and simple It is complex in its apparent three-dimensional perception and simple as it is conceived from equal pieces, uniquely displaced among themselves The basic stainless steel and glass portico acts similarly to the shots of a film, by means of rotary movements around a virtual axis in sequences of one metre distances The sensation of rotational movement that the user perceives uses the movement of the ramp itself to create a connected sequence that holds one's interest all the way up, creating different views in different places along the way photo: Roberto Ercilla Project is public! 2007 Roberto Ercilla Municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz Roberto_Ercilla 4

5 Sancho el Sabio Foundation Calle de Betoño Vitoria-Gasteiz The Sancho el Sabio Foundation, dating from 1964, is the main documentation and investigation centre of Basque culture and history The proposal involves the recovery of a former cemetery and based on that, the development of the remaining building Because the programme involves important storage spaces, it was decided that all of the storage areas and adjoining work areas would be on basement level and the former cemetery would hold a lobby, meeting rooms, administration, and circulation The main idea is to preserve the old building in a glass structure that would also provide natural light to the basement level To achieve this, a perimetrical ring around the cemetery is emptied and the glass façade of the new building is built up from this fissure The basement is developed as an external ring around the cemetery and in it are located different storage and work rooms The proposal realizes the coexistence of the two buildings photo: Roberto Ercilla Arquitectura Project is public! m² Main designer, Roberto Ercilla Miguel Angel Campo Caja Vital Kutxa Roberto_Ercilla 5

6 photo: Francisco Mangado photo: Francisco Mangado Archaeological Museum of Vitoria Calle Cuchilleria Vitoria-Gasteiz "We like to think of an archaeology museum as a compact jewel box concealing the treasure that history has given us piece by piece" The building adjoins the Palace of Bendaña (museum of Naipes Fournier) and the access is through the same courtyard Functionally, the volume is organized so that working areas and facilities are located at ground level and oriented towards the street, with an independent access The assembly hall and galleries for temporary exhibitions are at the public entry level, shared with the Naipes Fournier museum, whereas permanent exhibition halls are in the upper levels The stairs which connect them define part of the transparent façade onto the access courtyard In contrast, the façade on the street is hermetic with wide openings where needed In this way the internal exhibition spaces are unencumbered and only traversed by translucent light prisms The whole building is coated with bronze blades, very close on the street and more rarefied on the courtyard photo: Francisco Mangado Project is public! m² Francisco Mangado Diputación Foral de Álava liutaiogitano Tuesday to Friday: and Saturday: Sunday: Monday: closed 6

7 photo: Barcena y Zufiaur photo: Barcena y Zufiaur Caserío Gernika C/Los Buesa Vitoria-Gasteiz The Caserío Gernika is a building of unique characteristics of scale, volumetry and materials that, though it cannot strictly be listed as a monument, possesses notable constructional value as a representative element of the architecture made in Vitoria at the start of the century These circumstances have caused it to be included in the category of "Structural Conservation" by the General Plan of Vitoria-Gasteiz The effort put into the proposal has interpreted the existing elements to adapt them to the needs of the present, understanding the simple three-dimensional order of the built volumes as a contraposition between two types of architectural languages: more classic for the noble building and contemporary for the annexe This is a forceful yet serene and respectful intervention that has the only objective of recovering the original nobility of the old principal building and its tree-lined surroundings photo: Barcena y Zufiaur Project is not public! 2007 Barcena y Zufiaur barcenayzufiaur 7
