4 Local News 10m to help cut down on hospital waiting lists SOME 10m will be allocated to tackle the problem of waiting lists in public hospitals, with two to three million of that amount distributed immediately, Health Minister Giorgos Pamborides announced on Friday after a cabinet meeting. There are waiting lists of between eight and 24 months, he said, these should be eliminated. These are short-term measures which are investigated at the behest of the president and taken with immediate effect in order to alleviate the problems of our fellow citizens in anticipation of wider reforms. The plan, according to Pamborides, is to use practical solutions that take into account the public sector infrastructure and the possibility to work afternoons and evenings, as well as the capacity of the private sector to contribute to the effort. Costly and high tech equipment which has been secured at the cost of the Cypriot citizen, the taxpayer, is utilised mainly during the official working hours of the public service, he stated. Primarily, the public infrastructure will be used, but there will also be pilot programmes where senior staff of public hospitals will work overtime in the afternoons. In addition, cases which cannot be served by afternoon overtime in the public hospitals will be referred to contracted private hospitals which have agreed to provide certain services to the health ministry. Patients will be given a subsidy coupon, which will give them the possibility to decide which health service provider they would like to choose, while the patient only pays for the additional cost which may arise. Detailed aspects of the programme and the procedures will be presented at a press conference by the health minister early next week. Alitalia resuming flights to Cyprus after six-year hiatus Italy s national airline Alitalia will begin flights to Cyprus after a sixyear absence, while Greek company Ellinair has officially arrived to Cyprus aiming to directly connect Europe with Russia. Alitalia said their new flights between Rome and Larnaca would begin on June 8 with two flights a week. The distance between Italy and Cyprus will soon seem a little

5 shorter The new service represents an important launch pad for the further development of trade and tourism, the airline said in a statement. Flights to Larnaca will depart from Rome Fiumicino every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:35pm, arriving at 2:40am (local time) the following day, while Alitalia aircraft will take off from Larnaca on Thursdays and Sundays at 4.50am (local time), arriving in Rome at 7.15am. The service will be operated with Airbus A320 aircraft featuring two classes of service, business and economy. Alitalia s MilleMiglia loyalty programme members will be able to earn and redeem miles on these new flights. The airline cited figures by the Italian Statistics Institute Istatthat showing trade between the two countries, encouraged by common interests in the Mediterranean, continued to grow in 2015, with Italian exports standing at 263 million and imports at 32 million. Italy is one of Cyprus s main trading partners. The Rome-Larnaca flights aim to serve as a convenience to passengers that can take connecting flights at Alitalia s Fiumicino hub to 89 destinations in Italy and Europe, the Middle and Far East, North Africa, Asia and the Americas, including Santiago, Mexico City (from June 16) and Beijing (from July 18). Tickets for the new flights may be purchased online at alitalia.com, by calling the Alitalia Customer Center on from Italy ( from abroad), in travel agencies and at airport ticket offices. Ellinair Meanwhile, Ellinair which recently launched its Larnaca- Thessaloniki flight schedule with ticket prices as low as 19 including luggage said a new office opened in Limassol was opening up new jobs for people.
