1 The West Jersey Architect Headlines: A Message from Our President The Quarterly Newsletter of AIA West Jersey 5 List of Upcoming Events AIA-WJ Inaugural Banquet and Installation of Officers AIA-WJ Recipient of Community Service Award 2013 AIA Grassroots Leadership & Legislative Conference 2013 AIA-NJ Design Conference 2013 AIA-WJ Allied Members The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the professional organization that helps architects serve the public's needs and builds awareness of the role of architects and architecture in American society. The organization was created in Today, with headquarters in Washington, DC, and nearly 300 local chapters, the organization represents 70,000 licensed architects and associated professionals. AIA West Jersey (AIA WJ) is a local section of AIA New Jersey. The section was formed in 1925, uniting the architects of the Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties by merging the local group with the five other sections that make up The New Jersey Society of Architects. (AIA New Jersey)
2 Dear Fellow AIA West Jersey Members: A Message from Our 2013 President R. James DelGrosso, AIA 2013 AIA West Jersey President It is my pleasure to serve as your 2013 President of the American Institute of Architects, West Jersey Section. I am honored to represent the 177 members and to carry on the tradition of the past 87 years since our inception in I want to thank Bob O Reilly, AIA, LEED AP, our 2012 President and the members of the AIA WJ Board of Directors for working closely with me over the past three years in preparing me for the job ahead. This year our mission will be to continue to carry forward the programs began in 2012 and promote the public s understanding of architecture through Advocacy, Education and Community Service. Advocacy: It is our collective responsibility to promote the ideals of the profession to local business leaders and community officials, allied professionals, friends and neighbors in our home towns. As your representative, I along with Jason Lutz, AIA, President-Elect 2013 and Kim Bunn, AIA, LEED AP, 2013 Trustee and 2 nd VP of AIA NJ, attended the AIA Grassroots, Leadership and Legislative Conference in Washington, DC in March. We had the opportunity to visit the Congressional offices of Rep. Rob Andrews and Rep. Jon Runyan to promote the agenda of this year s conference Let s Get America Building. First, we carried the message to Capitol Hill asking for legislation to help small businesses create jobs by making the tax code work for small firms and encourage smart building. Our goal is to protect small firms from tax increases. Second, impressing upon our Congressmen to strengthen and repair our buildings (infrastructure) by improving our schools, hospitals, commercial and institutional facilities. Although the Federal Government is searching for spending cuts, this is not the time to neglect our public buildings repair and renovation and opportunities for energy upgrades. Third, encourage our Legislators to support building and re-building sustainable, resilient and vibrant communities. After the terrible devastation Hurricane Sandy wrought upon our communities, this initiative is even more important. Fourth, propose reforming government to build better for less. Consideration should be given to retrofits to offset reduction in construction funding. Fifth, consider programs that invest in the next generation of design leaders. Create opportunities for our architectural students and recent graduates through the National Design Services Act to promote pro bono work in exchange for offsetting college loans. Establish programs similar to the medical and legal professions that encourage pro bono community service to reduce the financial burden which many of our architectural graduates face. You can do your part by reaching out to your local, county and state representatives and letting them know the benefits of engaging architects in their planning and design initiatives. (@aia_advocacy). 2 The West Jersey Architect: Spring 2013
3 A Message from Our 2013 President (Continued) R. James DelGrosso, AIA 2013 AIA West Jersey President There is a lot of information available to AIA members on the AIA website, AIA Government and Community Relations, Issues and Advocacy 365- making your voice heard year round, and through social media such as Facebook and Twitter (@aia_advocacy). If you prefer you can make a financial donation to our Public Action Committee at Education: Educating the public should be our first priority. That begins with each of us representing the values of the profession. Architects are visionaries, we think three dimensionally, we understand scale and proportion, proper use of materials, contextual issues and integrated design. But that is not all that we represent. We protect the welfare of our communities, the safety of the public, the well-being of those that live, work and play in our buildings. Who is better equipped than an architect to contribute to the planning and design of our communities? Whether it involves public or private building projects, land use planning, code amendments/education, sustainable communities, or historic preservation, we need to be a voice in the decision making process. Each of us has a unique expertise in one or more aspects of design and/or construction that the business leaders and homeowners in your area would welcome the opportunity to dialogue with and gain the insights that you can share. Not only do you get the recognition and exposure as an expert but the profession as a whole is recognized as well. Community Service: There is no better way to celebrate the ideals of the profession than to participate in community service projects, lending a hand to help others. AIA West Jersey has for many years devoted a day of service to local communities on project related to the built environment. The variety of opportunities includes everything from assisting a citizen group of volunteers rebuild a children s playground, to planting trees in Camden through the NJ Tree Foundation, to helping the Heart of Camden put the finishing touches on a adaptive reuse of a building as a community theater. This year we will be seeking volunteers to join us for a day of service. Following the devastation left behind from super storm Sandy, there is still a need to help the communities in the rebuilding effort. We will explore opportunities along the coast as well as needs closer to home. This past December, Bob O Reilly and I attended a full day training session sponsored by AIA Disaster Safety Assessment Program. It was held at NJIT on Saturday, December 8th. 3 The West Jersey Architect: Spring 2013
4 A Message from Our 2013 President (Continued) R. James DelGrosso, AIA 2013 AIA West Jersey President The response from Architects throughout NJ was overwhelming and they were forced to cut off registration at 120 participants due to limited conference room capacity. All attending received California Training Credential s for Rapid Assessments after a disaster. Larry Parisi, AIA is New Jersey s coordinator through AIA NJ Homeland Security. Additional training sessions have been proposed. We will keep you informed if we receive notice of the next session. This is certainly a worthwhile credential to carry should another disaster strike the state. The AIA West Jersey Board of Trustees is working on a full calendar year of events that we hope will encourage your participation. Your thoughts on the programs and events we sponsor are appreciated. Below is the list of officers with their contact information. Please feel free to reach out to any of us for any reason if you feel the need. Sincerely, R. James Del Grosso, AIA, LEED AP 2013 President AIA West Jersey 4 The West Jersey Architect: Spring 2013
