2 Collab Philadelphia Museum of Art 2008 Collab student design Competition: Processing Frank Gehry Collab will hold its Sixteenth Annual Student Design Competition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday, November 3, This year s competition will be held in conjunction with the Museum s exhibition, Frank O. Gehry: Design Process and the Lewis House, devoted to the architecture and design of Frank Gehry, Collab s 2008 Design Excellence Award recipient. Students are asked to consider the way Frank Gehry experiments with forms and materials as part of his creative process. Theme Frank Gehry has designed furniture made of cardboard, bent wood, plastic, and metal, the same materials he uses in his architectural models. As in his architecture, Gehry develops and expands the possibilities of these materials, both formally and technically, taking them to the next level of development through digital modeling. Gehry s designs furnish some of his buildings; others are independently produced and marketed. The bench, characteristically found in bus stops, parks, cafeterias and museums, is designed to suit a range of human needs: to rest, to ponder, to interact, to commemorate. This simple yet complex object has the potential to enhance an experiential circumstance within a variety of environments. Challenge Students will design a bench for a public space in a museum. The bench is to be designed to seat more than one individual in a building Gehry could have designed, or did design, and take into account Gehry s own design process and the way the bench functions within a specific architectural context.

3 Submissions All submissions must include the following components: 1. Presentation board: 11" x 17" presentation board, mounted vertically (portrait format) on 1/2" foamcore, containing: Design statement outlining concept, technical and materials information A final high-resolution image of the design 2. Model: 3-Dimensional model in 1:4 scale 3. CD: A CD containing: 300 dpi image of bench in JPG format Microsoft Word document with design statement and registration form information 4. Registration Form: A completed Registration Form, which can be found at the end of this document or downloaded at Forms may be photocopied. Instructions: All entrants must complete a Registration Form form and place it in a sealed envelope along with the CD. The envelope is to be securely taped to the back of the presentation board and submitted with 3-D model. Addendum: Models made by 3-D Printers can use a scale other than 1:4. Please make sure to specify which scale is used. Date & Location Entries are to be submitted by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2008 for submissions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Prizes First Prize: $1,000 second Prize: $750 Third Prize: $500 Two Honorable Mentions entries are to be delivered to the Seminar Room, accessed through the Handicapped/ Accessible Entrance on the south side of the Museum. Please use this entrance only when submitting entries. Judging criteria Announcement OF WINNERS Publication Return of entries Eligibility 1. evidence of applied research of process and materials 2. originality and creativity of the concept 3. Functionality of design and ability to make multiples 4. construction (craft of submission) Entrants are asked to return to the Seminar Room at The Philadelphia Museum of Art on the same day at 3:00 p.m. for the announcement of the winners and a feedback session with the judges. A reception for the students will follow. After the competition, a selection of the winning projects will be published on the Philadelphia Museum of Art website and presented in the Collab spring newsletter. All entries will be returned following the awards presentation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Museum cannot be responsible for any projects left at the Museum after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, Students submitting projects to the Collab Student Design Competition must be currently enrolled in a college or university. Entries cannot be delivered by post. All students must be physically present to deliver their work on the morning of the competition and be present to hear the judges decisions later that day. No joint or team projects.

4 Competition Judges Lewis Wexler is the owner of Wexler Gallery in Old City, specializing in decorative and fine art. A member of many professional organizations, Lewis has been a juror for the Philadelphia Craft Show, the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Washington Craft Show. anthony Bracali is Principal of Friday Architects/Planners. Tony has served on the Board of the American Institute of Architects and as President of the Board of the Charter High School for Architecture & Design. He is the lead designer for the award-winning Paines Park skate park project in Philadelphia. Tony is also an adjunct professor at several universities. Jack Larimore is a furniture designer whose work bridges craft, art and design. Trained as a landscape architect, Jack creates multimedia works with a clear organic element. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and collections, including the Philadelphia Craft Show, Philadelphia Furniture and Furnishings Show, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. stephan Copeland is an industrial designer and owner of Copeland Studio. Specializing in industrial design, the firm s clients include Knoll, Flos, Steelcase and NASA, among others. Stephan s award-winning designs include the Greyhound Cycle, a 3-wheel, arm-powered racing cycle. linda O Keeffe is Creative Director for Metropolitan Home magazine, and the magazine s former Director of Design and Architecture for 14 years. Linda is the author of the book SHOES, currently in its 17th edition and translated into 15 languages. About Collab Collab is a collaboration of design professionals supporting the modern and contemporary design collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A volunteer committee founded in 1970, Collab is dedicated to enriching the Museum s collections with outstanding examples of mass-produced and unique designs, and to making the collections accessible to the general public, students, and the design community. Now among the most important in the country, the design collections of more than 2,000 objects range from appliances and furniture to ceramics, glass, posters, wallpapers, and lighting.
