2 ENTRY CATEGORIES 1 RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE: For the innovative use of timber, resulting in a distinctive visual impact on a residential building, either stand-alone or multi-unit/multi-storey project. 2 COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE: For the innovative use of timber resulting in a distinctive visual impact on a commercial, industrial, or public building environment. 3 ENGINEERING INNOVATION: For the innovative use of timber, resulting in a distinctive technical/structural solution in a residential, commercial, industrial or public building environment. 4 EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS: For the innovative use of EWP s, resulting in a distinctive impact of the EWP properties and aesthetics on a residential, commercial, industrial or public building environment. 5 INTERIOR INNOVATION: For innovative use of wood or a wood panel product as a signature feature, in a predominantly wood building, adding ambience, flair and practicality. 6 EXTERIOR INNOVATION & INFRASTRUCTURE: For any wood or wood panel product that forms the exterior of a structure, be it residential or non-residential which highlights the versatility and flexibility of wood while enhancing the buildings aesthetic. 7 NZ INDIGENOUS TIMBER SHOWCASE AWARD: The use of indigenous timber in a manner that best highlights its unique characteristics. This category is open to entries from across the spectrum of NZ timber usage from furniture to buildings, facilities to objet s d art. 8 NOVEL APPLICATION OF WOOD AWARD: For using a new wood product or system in a manner that characterises its unique features via an innovative application of design or technology. This category is open to entries from any sector. RESENE OVERALL SUPREME AWARD: This award is the Judges choice selected from all categories entered. PERMISSIONS (MANDATORY) I have read and agree to the term and conditions of entry (as detailed on following page). I permit NZ Wood and the award partners to use any images of my entry into the NZ Wood Timber Design Awards as they require for promotional use. I also permit photos to be used by third parties where acknowledgements are as I specified on previous page. ENTRY Entry is open to NZ resident architects, builders, architectural designers, engineers, students and other designers who have used NZ originated timber that has been manufactured in NZ.

3 AWARDS 2015 WELCOME TO THE 2015 NZ WOOD TIMBER DESIGN AWARDS ENTRY INFORMATION Please ensure you have read and understood the conditions below before submitting your entry into the 2015 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards. ENTRY Entry is open to NZ resident architects, builders, architectural designers, engineers, students and other designers who have used NZ originated timber that has been manufactured in NZ. Only one entry per project, joint entries between disciplines or firms are welcome. A submitted project must be based on a completed building or structure. Building or project must have been completed between 1 November 2013 and 31 December 2014 Building or project must have significant timber content, either structural or decorative. Projects may include the effective use of timber in combination with other materials. Building or project owner s consent for publicity must be acknowledged on the entry form. Anonymity of the owner s name will be assured if requested in the appropriate part of the entry form. The entry form must be complete and accurate you should retain a completed copy for your records. You will receive an confirming your entry once it has been processed. Projects entered in previous years must not be entered again. An entry fee of $95.00 per category entry is payable using the online PayPal method. A submission may be entered in a maximum of two of the following eight categories: PRIZES There will be a cash prize of $2000 awarded for the winner of each category. 3

4 PROCESS First Stage Entries for all categories close 5pm, Friday 12 May 2015 First stage of entry requires between 4 and 6 high resolution photographs and a project description of between 150 and 250 words. (In the case of an unbuilt project high resolution images will not be required, but plans and artists impressions/ drawings are essential). The project description must cover the judging criteria for the relevant categories.. The initial judging will be done via a series of electronic files, which will be electronically sent to each judge by drop box. The first stage entries will be judged and a short list developed against each category. The short list will be announced and up to 5 shortlisted entrants will be invited to submit second stage entries relevant to their category for detailed final judging. An entry fee of $95 per category entry is payable using the online PayPal method. All entrants have the opportunity to showcase their entries at the Presentation Evening, if not selected through to Stage Two of Judging by paying $50 per entrant. (Further details on page 7). Week Commencing 26 May 2015, Timber Design Awards shortlisted category finalists will be announced and will be invited to enter the Second Stage Second Stage Entries will close at 5pm, 4 August 2015 Second stage entries will require 2-3 A2 presentation boards (5mm foamcore) with mounted images. Written design statements ( words) can be included as paper copies. NZ Wood reserves the right to sub-divide categories in the event of a large number of high quality entries. 6 JUDGES DANIEL SCHEIBMAIR ME (Hons), CPEng, IntPE, MIPENZ (261677) Design Engineer Current President of the NZ Timber Design Society, a technical group of IPENZ, and Chartered Professional Engineer who has been with MiTek for 7 years and more recently moved to Pryda, building on extensive knowledge on timber connections using mechanical fasteners which began with his Master of Engineering Thesis work at the University of Auckland. He has an in-depth knowledge of timber engineering and stress graded timber as well as Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) from previous roles. PIP CHESHIRE B.A. B. Arch. Principal, Cheshire Architects. Pip is a Distinguished Alumni University of Auckland, Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and a Member of the Auckland City Council Urban Design Panel. He was the Chair of the Auckland Branch of the NZ Institute of Architects between 1998 and 2000, Pip is a Greenstar Accredited professional. In 2004 he founded Cheshire Architects Ltd, a move that followed 13 years with Jasmax in the capacities of director and, later, managing director. Pip has an impressive list of achievment to his extensive 32 years of experience. DUNCAN JOINER PhD (London) B.Arch(Hons) FNZIA RIBA LDINZ Chief Architect, Department of Building and Housing. (MBIE) Duncan Joiner has experience in architectural practice, research and education. His appointments include ten years as Assistant Government Architect in New Zealand, and Chief Architect in Works Consultancy Services Ltd., before establishing his own architectural design and research business. Between 1994 and 2007 Duncan was Head of the Wellington School of Design, Inaugural Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Design, Fine Arts and Music and Professor of Design at Massey University. He was a practising architect at Stephenson & Turner Ltd immediately prior to his appointment as Chief Architect at the Department of Building and Housing in Duncan is a Fellow of the NZIA and a Life Member of DINZ. He holds a PhD from London University, and was educated at the School of Architecture, University of Auckland and the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. Novel Application of Wood Award Judges: TOM CLARK Tom is the Technical Services Manager at CHH Pulp & Paper s Kinleith Mill. He has been with Carter Holt Harvey in a range of technical and operations roles for 19 years. Prior to that, he was a scientist at Forest Research Institute (now Scion) for 13 years. Most of his career has been involved in R&D and process improvement projects related to the kraft pulp and paper industry. He is also on the Executive Committee of Appita. Tom has a Bachelor of Technology degree and PhD in biotechnology from Massey University. DOUG GAUNT Doug Gaunt is a civil engineer with 25 years industry and research experience. His career started with Forest Research in 1979 during which time he completed his NZCE (civil) followed by his Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Canterbury NZ. Doug then worked for six years as a structural design engineer both in NZ and the U.K designing with concrete, steel and timber. Doug returned 17 years ago to Scion working as a research engineer and is manager of the Timber Engineering laboratory, Science Leader for the Wood & Fibre program. PUBLIC RELATIONS/PROMOTION Permission from owners and photographers is the responsibility of the entrant and must be obtained before entering. NZ Wood will publish all entries on the NZ Wood website and may use photographs and details in subsequent web articles and advertising. As an added benefit for attending this years awards, NZ Wood has joined NZIA this year and 10 CPD points will be given to all that attend the Presentation Event. 6

7 First Stage Entries for all categories close 5pm, 12 May 2015 ENTRY DETAILS COMPONENTS: STAGE ONE 1. Completed entry form and paid entry fee 2. Photographs For purpose of viewing by judges the photographs should illustrate use of timber throughout the project. Should include at least one photograph which strongly represents the timber subject of the project. One photograph which shows the completed project. Digital colour high resolution images sent via electronic files, which will be sent to each judge by drop box or Hightail. Files must be suitable for media/print use (JPEG image: minimum of 300 dpi and no larger than 10 MB in file size). Additional plans and sections no larger than A4 size may also be included to demonstrate particular features of the building. Photographs of the frame in construction will be required in Category 3 & 4 Engineering Innovation and Excellence in Engineered Wood Products. First stage entries to be sent via FTP Upload: 3. Project Descriptions These will enable the entry to be properly appreciated by the judging panel, a short form of which may be placed on the NZ Wood website, and in the case of winning entries for post award publicity purposes. Requirements: The description must not exceed 250 words each, included in the Dropbox file as a Word document (only) including: The stage one entry description must include an explanation for how the use of timber added value to the project in terms of construction benefits, aesthetic benefits, cost benefits. Details of the timber species (as appropriate) used for various applications within the project.
