1 tsk l a s v e g a s r e n o l o s a n g e l e s AIA Nevada Distinguished Service Award 2 October 2015 To distinguished members of the Jury Thank you members of the AIA Nevada Distinguished Service, I am honored to provide a letter of support for Gary Indiano of Basalite for the Allied Member of the year award. Gary is an incredible individual and offers to help at every occasion, often when he has not been asked but knows there is a need. I have known Gary for nearly 20 years professionally and at this time his continual good deeds and can do attitude have made him a dear friend. Community giving is integral to Gary s personality. The Step2 program in Reno is a national not-forprofit model for helping women fight addiction and to help them recover their spirit and ultimately to be reunited with their children. 6 years ago Step2 needed to expand their services and we designed a two-story building of roughly 7,000 square feet. The project commenced, but a number of their anticipated donors did not deliver and the project was in peril. Gary convinced the Basalite Reno office to donate ALL of the CMU for the project. We redesigned the exterior from an EIFS and Cement Siding project to a durable and easy to maintain CMU Exterior. It was an incredible gift they provided to the Step2. Now Step2 has met the community needs and is now underway with a dormitory building that I am sure Gary has raised his hand once more to support. Gary and Basalite also have donated and delivered their products to schools for raised garden beds and then even picked up the material when the project was completed. Many of the Community College student projects frequently have masonry material that has been donated for designs! Gary & Basalite have been sponsors for every event that the Northern Nevada Chapter has organized in the last 10 years. From being a title sponsor for the WMR Conference/Reno Host, multiple AIA Nevada Design Awards & Seminars, major sponsorships of the AIANN golf tournaments, sponsors of Canstruction and even our quarterly lunch programs. We will have evening lectures and Gary attends each one and after the program is excited to see the creativity that is pushed by young designers with unique program challenges. Gary & Basalite will even provide sponsorships for college students to attend the chapters paid speaker programs, feeling that costs should not preclude educational opportunities. Gary always recognizes quality design and inspires confidence to individuals and firms and recommends their projects for various design awards, be they local or regional award programs. He makes us feel good about our work even when we have moved on to the next pressing project. Gary has an open door policy at his office and has answered every technical question we have about masonry and construction. If he is not able to provide the answer he finds out who can and has them call us! His open door also extends to his dining room and he has a standing invitation to join him for dinner as he is the master of the BBQ and invite all of the profession and tradesman to an annual holiday party. 2 Gary Indiano Achievements Gary has been a member of the Reno Nevada Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute since August He has served as President, Vice President and member chair over that span. Gary and his family are members of the St Rose of Lima Catholic church in Reno, Nevada. He has served on the church parish council and is currently a member of the Pastoral Council. Gary volunteered for a Rotary Club project for the homeless in downtown Reno. Basalite crews donated masonry bench materials for the project. Gary Indiano - Achievements 1

3 Gary Indiano Biography Gary is of Basque heritage and was raised on a ranch in Minden, Nevada. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1971 and went on to receive an Associates Degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Nevada - Reno in Gary started work after college for Morrison Knudson as a truck driver and draftsman for the Trans Alaska Pipeline. He moved back to Nevada in 1977 and took up employment with Carson Masonry Supply as a Sales manager and truck driver. In October of 1984 he hired on as Assistant Plant Manager/ Dispatcher for Glass Mountain Block/Basalite in Carson City, Nevada. He was transferred to the position of Structural Sales Manager in 1989 to the Sparks, Nevada Basalite Concrete Products LLC Facility. This is a position he has held for 26 years working for Gordon Hinkel the manager. Basalite Nevada is now a division of Pacific Coast Building Products. Gary has been instrumental in acquiring support for AIA from Basalite and Pacific Coast Building Products. Basalite has been a sponsor or supporter of every event organized by AIA Northern Nevada for over ten years. Gary joined the AIANN Board as an allied director in He has faithfully served on the board with good attendance and participation in numerous committees. Additionally he has offered his services working the desk at numerous registration programs. He has offered his conference room for rotating board meetings for many years. He is married and his wife Joan also works at Basalite Concrete Products. They have two children and four wonderful grandchildren. He loves living in Northern Nevada and will continue to support AIA anyway he can. Gary Indiano Biography 1

4 Gary Indiano Contributions to AIANN Sponsorship and Financial Contributions to AIANN Gary started contributing to AIANN through his organization Basalite in They always sponsored a portion of the scholarship golf tournament, providing bags for tee prizes and sponsoring a team in the tournament. During this period they sponsored an AIA member, Brad Van Woert, for the Senior Gold Rush Tourney in Rancho Murieta, California. During the time period 2000 to 2010 Gary and Basalite sponsored numerous AIANN activities including the golf tournament, conferences, Canstruction, and various continuing education programs. Gary assisted with the lobbying efforts with AIA Nevada and AGC for the 5% preferential fee structure for local Nevada architects in public works projects during the Nevada legislative session. Also during this time period Basalite became an Allied member of AIANN with Gary as the company representative. In 2010 Basalite was the Platinum sponsor for the Triptych conference and AIA Nevada Awards at Squaw Valley, California. In addition Gary assisted with donated block material to construct the registration table designed by a local architect for the conference as well as the glass block table centerpieces and block stage for the banquet awards dinner and programs. Gary personally shipped the materials and helped construct these items for the conference. Additionally Gary assisted with the registration during the conference and awards program. 5 2010 AIA Nevada Awards Banquet Centerpiece During this time period Gary Indiano became an Allied member of the Board for AIANN. He joined the membership committee helping recruit additional Allied members from the construction community. Basalite continued as a leading sponsor of the AIANN golf tournament at its new location at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nevada and continues to do so through Basalite sponsor plaques and banners proudly displayed in Basalite s conference room Gary Indiano - Contributions 2

6 Knowledge Contributions to the Profession of Architecture Gary in his position as a masonry sales representative has been invaluable to the local AIA architect community providing new material information, building techniques and logistic support to the many masonry projects undertaken by local architects. Gary has kept the architectural community informed through his efforts with the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada. Behind the scenes he has updated the mailing lists of the Northern Nevada Architectural Community so that all receive the publications and latest product information for this building material. He has encouraged AIA architects to submit to the CMA awards program giving exposure to Northern Nevada Architect s design prowess. Additionally he encourages architects to photograph their projects for inclusion in Basalite s office wall of masonry projects at their Reno Headquarters. This helps market and promote architectural design as well as innovative uses of masonry. Charitable Contributions to the Northern Nevada Architectural Community Organizations in the Northern Nevada community have benefited greatly through Gary s efforts offering pro bono masonry materials to numerous architectural projects. The Step2 project where Basalite donated all the masonry materials for a 7,000 sf building is one project that comes to mind. Another project provided keystone block for a trail head project in Carson City conceived by an Eagle Scout. Gary s receptive attitude has provided the difference in many charitable works undertaken by AIA architects. His friendly demeanor and accessibility throughout the community has made it easier for architects to ask for his company s help. Sustainable Contributions to the Northern Nevada Architectural Community Gary has been instrumental in shaping Basalite as the local source for masonry products within the AIANN construction sphere. By providing green building certifications for the materials in their Carson City plant and with the plant s proximity to Northern Nevada and California construction sites, LEED credits in Materials and Resources are easier to document and achieve. Additionally Gary is the go to guy to provide the unique color, shape, or material with masonry that maintains the local source for LEED projects. Gary Indiano - Contributions 3

Fourth Street, Suite 175 Las Vegas, NV Re: Nomination for Gary Indiano for AIA Nevada Allied Member Award Dear Randy, It is my pleasure to write this letter of support for Gary Indiano for the AIA Nevada Allied Member Award. Gary has been a passionate supporter of AIA Northern Nevada for a number of years. As the Allied Director Gary has been involved in many AIA Northern Nevada committees and events. He has enthusiastically participated in chapter luncheons, the golf tournament, the DICE conference and others. He offers his time without being asked. Along with his company, Basalite Concrete Products, Gary has been an important financial supporter of many of our events. Gary is not a look at me type of person in any way. He has embraced his Director s position and has quietly led by example with his commitment. Gary is a very knowledgeable masonry product representative. Gary is always available to answer questions and give advice. For many years he has been one of the best at his job in our community. He s very committed to assisting architects and engineers with Basalite s wide range of products. He is always prompt with technical information, samples and ideas. There is a great deal of concrete masonry construction in our area and Gary makes it easy for us to succeed. I know all the architects appreciate Gary s professionalism and friendship very much. Gary is not one to seek out recognition. He is one of the most genuine people I know. He is involved because he feels he can improve our profession, our buildings and our communities. His involvement in AIA and his work with Basalite are something we appreciate very much. Gary is very deserving of the AIA Nevada Allied Member Award. Our chapter wouldn t be the same without him. 8 October 9, 2015 AIA Nevada Distinguished Service Award Distinguished Jury, On behalf of Gary Indiano I am pleased to offer this letter of support for the AIA Nevada Allied member of the year award. I have known Gary for over 25 years from our mutual association in the masonry design industry. He has been the wealth of knowledge assisting with the masonry component of numerous architectural projects I have undertaken over this time span. My more recent association with Gary has been with the AIA Northern Nevada Board. As I worked my way up the AIA ladder to become President of AIANN in 2014, Gary has been on the board as Allied Board member. He has assisted with numerous projects, manning a phone tree to recruit new members, assisting at the registration desk for events, attending the various AIANN functions, attending all our board meeting, and providing the monetary sponsorships when our chapter so desperately needed support during hard economic times. He has been the friend I could bounce various ideas off of as we moved our AIANN component in new directions. He has been the AIANN board member every leader is glad to have.
