16 C LIENT SHOWCASE FIRST FLIGHT CENTENNIAL FOUNDATION THE CHALLENGE In preparation for the 100 th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight, the Foundation s mission was to raise funds to make improvements to Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, NC; increase public awareness about the Wright Brothers and their accomplishments; and to support the events of the Centennial in In addition to sponsorships, a licensed merchandise program was commenced to achieve additional revenues and to create commemoratives for the Centennial event. Additional challenges included meeting the educational content requirements of the National Park Service ( NPS ) for the products to be sold on site at the Memorial through Eastern National (the park s concessionaire), creating distribution channels outside of the immediate Outer Banks, NC region, and providing products at all price points to allow consumers of all income brackets to join the celebration. THE SOLUTION Since October 2001, BC Connections has been working with the Foundation to strategically grow the licensing program from a limited fledgling licensing program into a healthy and productive program with a comprehensive range of products. The agency quickly grasped the international scope of the centennial organizations and became acquainted with the many people and groups associated with it. It identified lifestyle categories in which the brand could touch consumers in a meaningful way: apparel and accessories, gifts, home furnishings, jewelry, stationery, model aircraft, toys, private label wine and other collectible commemoratives. BC Connections developed a strategic approach that enabled the Foundation to market its brand throughout the aerospace industry, the U.S. and through it s online store. THE RESULTS The agency inherited six licensees and proceeded to recruit thirty-nine additional licensees. Total guaranteed royalties to be received by the Foundation through 2005 exceeded $1 million. Retailers throughout the Outer Banks and the U.S. carried the products including Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Belk s, Walgreen s, various local souvenir shops, aerospace and science museums, and the First Flight Pavilion Gift Shop on site at the Memorial. The First Flight Centennial online store was also developed and managed by BC Connections. In addition, various companies in the aerospcae industry purchased First Flight Centennial products to celebrate the Centennial with their staff and clients. Retail sales through 2006 have exceeded $5,000,000 including $1,000,000 in sales on site at the Memorial during the 6 day Centennial Celebration. In addition to the funding for improvements received by NPS from the Foundation, NPS also receives a large portion of the retail sale revenues from Eastern National. The Foundation has modified its logos and trademarks to First Flight to continue its licensing program to create ongoing revenues. 23 D a v i d L e n k W h e e l i n g A r t i s a n C e n t e r Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation The Wheeling Artisan Center is a 4,500 square foot blend of interpretive exhibits with a retail crafts gallery. The exhibits invite the visitor to explore Wheeling s 19 th century manufacturing heritage through the serialized lives of personalities involved with each of its key industries. These exhibits employ a wide range of large and industrial artifacts and products from Wheeling s past in contrast with quality modern-day craft items. David Lenk developed the foundational interactive concept of this experience and worked closely with WNHAC through the research and artifact selection phases. He further refined the final design based on what industries and representative personalities were chosen as topics. Explus Incorporated fabricated and installed the exhibits. P r o f i l e

24 D a v i d L e n k D r e s s e s f o r H u m a n i t y The People s Princess Charitable Foundation Dresses for Humanity was a traveling exhibit featuring fourteen gowns that were once worn by the late Princess of Wales. David Lenk was responsible for developing the concept and the final design for this high profile project. 27 D a v i d L e n k E x h i b i t P r o p o s a l Independence Hall Foundation Wheeling, West Virginia Wheeling s Independence Hall Museum was chosen as the permanent venue for an important collection of conserved regimental banners and standards from the Civil War. David Lenk was asked by the Foundation to propose for both a method to display these flags and series of supporting interpretive exhibits. These digital renderings by Kevin Brookes illustrate David s design and interpretive concept and formed a key part of his final proposal. P r o f i l e

28 D a v i d L e n k T i t a n i c Nauticus Norfolk, Virginia Nauticus was the venue for the first exhibit of artifacts recovered from the RMS Titanic in the United States. The entire 6000 square foot exhibit was conceived, developed and installed by Explus in ten weeks. This effort required concurrent development of content with case work; the case housing the starboard stern telegraph contained two tons of aqueous solution along with the artifact itself. David Lenk developed the concept, graphics and lighting, designed the modular exhibit furniture, selected images and negotiated use rights, directed the writing of the script and created a storyboard for an A/V presentation. 35 James Madison: Secretar y of State in an Age of Expansion and Exploration James Madison s Montpelier As part of the national commemoration of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, James Madison s Montpelier presented this year-long exhibit. The exhibit presented sufficient information for the most scholarly visitor, and also featured information at a kid s-eye level and Fun Facts to engage and enlighten younger visitors as well. Design 3 designed the components, managed the fabrication, and installed the exhibit, including the Madison River with its headwaters behind the primary panels and its termination at the background mural with a canoe that provided a photo opportunity for visitors.

36 A d m i n i s t r a t i v e H e a d q u a r t e r s Portsmouth Naval Hospital The Portsmouth Naval Hospital predates the Civil War. The original building underwent a complete restoration and adaptive reuse in 2002, and is now the administrative headquarters for the sprawling hospital complex. Design 3 produced and installed the artwork package for the building, reproducing nearly 300 historical photos and illustrations, antique postcards, and original floor plans relating to the history of the building and the city of Portsmouth. The Command Floor features images of the Battle of Hampton Roads, which took place within sight of the building.

37 W a t e r f r o n t A t h l e t i c C o m p l e x Norfolk Naval Station This state-of-the-art facility is located directly across the street from the Naval Station s primary piers. In addition to a fully equipped athletic facility, the complex features a theater, quiet lounge, internet rooms, gamestation rooms, and music recording facilities offering a retreat for the enlisted sailors stationed on the docked ships. Design 3 was commissioned to develop a series of Pop Art images from standard naval operations photos as the artwork package for the facility. The color palette was chosen to complement the colors used in the contemporary architecture and on the furniture throughout the building. Design 3 managed the production, framing and installation of the project.

38 B u i l d i n g n D i s p l a y G r a p h i c s Norfolk Naval Station Building N-26 is the headquarters building for the Norfolk Naval Station. Working with the exhibits staff of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, Design 3 produced and installed a 10 x 25 photomural in the main lobby, and designed and produced twenty 24 x 30 panels depicting the history of the Naval Station. Design 3 also reproduced, mounted and installed a variety of historic images for display throughout the public spaces of the building.

39 This sketch illustrates how a camp s layout mirrored the organization of a military unit. The soldiers who made up a company camped in a line, six to a hut, making a company street, with the company commander at the head of the street. The three larger tents shown at the bottom are for the higher-ranking regimental officers. Archaeologists removed more than a century and a half of accumulated topsoil to reveal the undisturbed site of two huts, outlined in red. The rock mounds are the remains of the chimney base with the hearth appearing as a red patch of clay, scorched by the months of fires. The pits outside the huts were excavated by soldiers to obtain clay for daubing the chimney and timber walls of their huts. The pits were then used for the disposal of ash and other trash. Emancipation brought little improvement to the material lives of African Americans. Many left slavery owning nothing more than the furniture brought from their slave cabins, the clothes on their back, and a few household utensils. Two decades after emancipation, African- Americans economic status had slowly improved, but was far below that of local whites. The average value of farms owned by African Americans in Orange County in the 1880s was one-tenth the average value of farms owned by whites. The great majority of freedmen in Orange County were farm laborers. A comparison of the occupations of African Americans and whites, based on the 1880 census, shows a majority of blacks making their living as laborers while most whites were farmers. Farmers owned land, determined their own production and were able to grow much of the food needed for their families. By contrast, laborers worked as farmhands and were dependent on the farm economy for jobs and income. Stream Latrines Enlisted Soldiers Walking Trail Approximately 500 soldiers were camped in these woods. The orderly layout of the camp follows the military plan, with the company streets extending down the hill in front of you. Keeping the men organized by company in camp strengthened the bonds between the men, helping to build the cohesion needed in battle. The camp layout also made quick deployment possible McGowan s soldiers assembled for the march to Wilderness with only 30 minutes of preparation. Soon after the Civil War, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution were ratified, abolishing slavery, defining citizenship to encompass emancipated slaves, and extending voting rights to emancipated slaves. The promise of citizenship, however, was curtailed with the end of Reconstruction, and would not be realized for well over a century. 0ft You Are Here Ngrid 1"=200' 2ft. contours Company Officers Regimental Officers 100ft As one of the few food-storage items recovered, this jug documents the sparse diet of the soldiers in this camp. The absence of food containers indicates that McGowan s troops probably did not have access to condiments, preserves, liquor, or pickled foods. In addition, only a small amount of animal bone has been found, suggesting that the diet of the troops consisted mainly of rations of corn meal, bacon, and hardtack. Soldiers were provided only the barest of essentials to construct their huts (their issue tents and about two dozen nails). They obtained the remainder of the materials including timbers, clay and stone from the woods and surrounding area. The huts measured 12 feet square and served as a shelter for five to six soldiers. Most newly emancipated slaves stayed in their locality, and worked to create new lives for themselves by establishing homes, earning wages, and reuniting their families. One such freedman was Allan Jackson, pictured above, who settled to the west of Montpelier. By the 1880s, his home had become the center of a thriving community known as Jacksontown, which consisted of as many as 15 households, a store, a school, and a cemetery. For freedmen, one of the most meaningful opportunities offered by emancipation was owning land. Land enabled a family to build their own home and have their own land, giving them some self-sufficiency and security. In western Orange County, within two decades of emancipation, nearly 30 percent of African-American households owned or leased the land on which they had built their homes. Excavations have uncovered the remains of huts built by the soldiers during the winter of 1863 and The layout of the camps and the material evidence found during excavations provides a picture of the soldier s daily lives as they struggled through the harsh winter conditions. The camps, almost untouched since being abandoned in May 1864, contain a wealth of information concerning the Confederate Army during the last years of the American Civil War. E n ma nc nc st-em ipat a Post-Emancipation With emancipation, African Americans found themselves in a complex situation. By law, slavery was abolished, promising freedom and citizenship, but few owned land or had resources to support themselves, and prejudice against them was widespread. Yet, many newly emancipated slaves stayed in the area and took advantage of economic and social ties developed prior to emancipation to obtain a livelihood. This sign is located at the edge of the 16-acre Gilmore Farm. The Gilmore property ran from this sign to present-day Route 20. The acquisition of land brought African Americans independence and self-sufficiency, confirming their status as new citizens of the American nation. In the summer of 2004, Shirley instituted an archaeology program to uncover even more of the site s valuable stories. Design 3 designed and oversaw the fabrication of the exhibit case below to display artifacts found on the plantation.

41 B i k e Tr a i l s K i o s k Town of Remington The Town of Remington received a TEA-21 grant to develop a series of cycling trails through the surrounding historic countryside and to build a kiosk with a map of trails to attract cyclists to the community as day tourists.
