2 photo: Tschuggen Spa photo: Tschuggen Spa Tschuggen Bergoase Sonnenbergstrasse Arosa "A spa is very much like a sacred space," says Botta The Tschuggen Bergoase Spa is carved into a mountain 1,800 m above sea level and runs over 4 floors The interior walls are clad in Arosa granite The building is topped by a series of 9 eye-catching "light trees" sail-like structures that capture natural light "At night, they are magnificently illuminated and shine like beacons They expose spaces to light that would not otherwise be illuminated And although the Spa is carved into a mountain, overall it is not a grotto in that it is defined by open spaces with smooth walls The concept is that of a sanctuary a place to escape" The Bergoase Spa is next to the five-star Tschuggen Grand Hotel, close to the ski slopes Hotel and spa are linked by a glass bridge that carries guests into the building through a second-floor reception area The architecture mixes an open-plan design where you can see down onto all 4 floors from the uppermost level and private treatment spaces photo: Tschuggen Spa Project is public! 4 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Church San Benedetg Caplutta Sogn Benedetg Sumvitg This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the building on a steep slope The church has a wooden construction and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips, similar to the locally build houses The building is very carefully detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind the concrete stairs of the entrance) The setting is wonderful Project is public! 1988 Client Peter Zumthor City of Sumvitg Marloes_Faber photo: Marloes Faber You can visit the church daily apart from Sunday Take the car to Sumvitg in the canton of Graubünden In this village is one road up to San Benedigt (different ways to write) It's about a km tough climbing for the car In San Benedigt it is easy to find your way to the church 4

6 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Paspels School Alte Domleschgergasse Paspels Paspels school is a reinforced concrete monolith The architect did not use right angles for the outside, so although at first glance the exterior geometry seems simple, closer study reveals a chain-like reaction of slight distortions that shroud the building in an air of strangeness Inside, however each classroom on the first and second floors has two right-angled sides that make up the walls of cruciform access corridors In sum, the school can be interpreted as an exercise in the phenomenology of perception photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 7 photo: Ralph Feiner photo: Ralph Feiner Vineyard Estate Gantenbein Im Feld CH-7306 Fläsch This exclusive wine estate is a family run business, situated at the edge of gently sloping vineyards The extension to the vineyard exists out of 3 simple buildings that form a small courtyard 2 existing single storey buildings have been completed by a new structure The basement has 8 mushroom-columns, and forms an extension to the fermentation cellar, which is half sunk in the ground At courtyard level is a hall where the grapes are pressed, and at the top are the rooms for tasting wines It's a pragmatic, yet aesthetically pleasing building The concrete skeleton frame is filled in with bricks which are turned and have open vertical joints Together with the ETH Zurich these wall elements were assembled by industrial robots The open-jointed brickwork gives the facade an image of stacked grapes It provides sun shading and ensured an almost constant temperature for an optimal fermentation process Transparent polycarbonate sheeting provides protection against wind and moisture photo: Ralph Feiner Project is public! 2007 Client Bearth & Deplazes Martha and Daniel Gantenbein Naomi 7

10 Das Gelbe Haus Via Nova Flims Shortly before his death, architect Rudolf Olgiati donated his collection of cultural assets to the municipality of Flims on the condition that 'Das Gelbe Haus' (The Yellow House) in the heart of Flims was rebuilt according to his liking Before all, it had to be "painted white from top to bottom" In 1997, his son, Valerio Olgiati, was comissioned by the municipality to redesign the house into a museum (text from website museum) Project is public! 1999 Valerio Olgiati JKA photo: Jiran Kohout Architekti Tuesday - Sunday:

13 photo: Alessandro Conti photo: Alessandro Conti School Churwalden Witiwäg Churwalden Very early work by Peter Zumthor, this addition to a school complex consist of two new classrooms buildings and a gymnasium, built out of concrete bricks The classrooms develop in two levels: entrance on a main corridor with a first working-space, individual staircase leading to the upper floor, that is the main teaching space, opening on a garden in the back From the outside, the gym looks as a 3-naves church; the interior reveals that the roof of the shape is given by the structure, running longitudinal to the gym photo: Alessandro Conti Project is not public! 1982 Peter Zumthor alekf By appointment 13

16 photo: Iwan Baan photo: Iwan Baan Villa Vals Poststrasse Vals Villa Vals is designed by Bjarne Mastenbroek and Christian Müller, respectively of the architectural offices SeARCH and CMA Their design plan was to completely integrate the villa into the landscape to avoid disturbing the unspoiled nature That is why access to the villa is only possible via the nearby wooden Graubünder shed, through an underground tunnel which runs straight through the mountainside The façade of the house is slightly slanted, adding to the view of the mountain scenery across the valley opposite of the house The house, which was completed in 2009, was built and furnished in cooperation with a large number of Dutch designers and companies that produce Dutch design Their willful designs fit well in the spacious, industrial architecture of the villa Pieces and objects of, amongst others, Hella Jongerius, Demakersvan, Scholten & Baijings, Marcel Wanders, Claudy Jongstra, Royal Tichelaar Makkum and Vitra Nederland were used (text from official website) photo: Roderick Trompert Project is not public!
