The National Museum of Western Art is the premier public art gallery in Japan specializing in art from the Western tradition The Museum is located in the museum and zoo complex in Ueno Park in Taito, central Tokyo The museum is square in plan with the main body of the galleries raised on piloti to first floor level The layout is influenced by Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra museum in Ahmedabad which was being designed at the same time Entrance for visitors is at ground floor level via the 19th Century Hall This double height space is lit from above with a north glazed pyramidal skylight intersected with reinforced concrete beams and a column On the opposite side of the hall from the entrance, the ascent to the paintings gallery is via a promenade ramp which affords better views of Rodin's sculptures photo: Nazar Leskiw Le Corbusier Nazar 6

9 photo: Nazar Leskiw Jiyu Gakuen Girls' School Nishiikebukuro Tokyo Japan Jiyu Gakuen Girls' School is the original building complex of Jiyu Gakuen, designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright Impressed by the couple's self-reliant, Christian-oriented educational philosophy, Wright accepted to undertake the design of their new school Built of economical 2 x 4 wood and plaster, Jiyu Gakuen featured a central section with double-height volume and soaring windows facing south onto an open courtyard, with symmetrical wings on the east and west It was built to child scale, with an architectural richness belying its budget Myonichikan is also given a Japanese touch by Wright's extensive use of gray-green Oya stone for pavements, columns and the lanterns standing in the corridors The Myonichikan consists of four buildings; the main, the east, and the west buildings and the auditorium The main building stands with the two classroom buildings to the west and the east forming a U-shape photo: Nazar Leskiw 1921 Frank Lloyd Wright Nazar 9

13 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Novocomum Viale Giuseppe Sinigaglia Como Italy From 1927 to 1929 Giuseppe Terragni designed the Novocomum, a modern apartment complex He presented a proposal with very traditional sides to the municipality, which they approved The scaffolding was placed and construction was started However, the construction drawings which were presented to the municipality have never been received by the builders, which he gave a new proposal Nobody could see what was developing behind the scaffolding At the moment of presenting the finished building, it was a big shock An awful building had risen up, according to the municipality There was even a moment they considered demolishing it, until they realized that the avant-gardists loved the building and it made Como an even more popular destination Terragni was looking for a good combination between surrounding landscape and the building This Rationalist thinking ended up in a well-designed apartment complex photo: Marloes Faber Project is not public! 1929 Giuseppe Terragni Marloes_Faber You can easily park the car in the street and walk around the building 13

17 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Casa Bianchi Via Fomeggie 6 Riva San Vitale This single-family house is located at the foot of the San Giorgio mountain, on the banks of Lake Lugano The house establishes a dialectic play with the environment, emphasized by its minimal occupation of the site and by the thin metal bridge that establishes the physical relationship between the house and the mountain The 'tower', virtually defined by four corner piers and carved with geometric cuts through which the light penetrates, is organized along the vertical axis in a succession of different architectural situations and rhythms The spatial interpenetration between interior and exterior thus gives shape to a 'filter zone', terraces within the perimeter in its functional organization: the upper part holds the entrance atrium, a study, and the stairs leading to the lower floors, where the parents' room is located These levels are partially open and in communication with the living and dining area below, while the services are placed in the basement Project is not public! 22 Disentis Cloister Stable Block Via Lucmagn Disentis Following the destruction of the old stable blocks by fire, Gion A Caminada has been commissioned by the Cloister of Disentis to build new farming facilities The project is scheduled for completion in 2010, with an educational facility and farm-shop for passing visitors The highlight of the development is the long deck which allows visitors to walk above the cow shed In the future, a cheese making building is also proposed on the site Project is not public! 2010 Client Gion A Caminada Cloister of Disentis jrhartley The stable block will be open to the public when it's finished in 2010 In the meantime, you can contact the Cloister at Disentis if you would like to be shown the project 22

23 Disentis Cloister Girls Dormitory Via Sursilvana Disentis This project is adjacent to the Benedictine Cloister in Disentis and is home to the girls who board at the school Having the lowest cost proposal, Gion A Caminada won the project after a competition The project is particularly interesting as every floor within the five-storey building has direct outdoor access By integrating the design so well into the terrain, Caminada eliminated the need for a secondary means of escape Consequently, there is one central spine containing the stairs, services and a lift for disabled access The stairs make a quarter turn between levels, so each floor plan is twisted 90' compared to the floor below Within this sculptural core are 'snuggle corners' heated copper plates for the girls to curl up in and chat The girls move from the ground floor towards the top level with seniority, as they move "from caterpillars, to pupae, to full butterflies" Project is not public! 2004 Client Gion A Caminada Cloister of Disentis jrhartley The project is located in the heart of Disentis You may be able to get a tour with one of the monastery's brothers during the school holidays through prior arrangement 23

24 Duvin Primary School Casutt Duvin This primary school is at the heart of the village of Duvin in the Grisons As with the majority of Caminada's buildings from this time, it is built using the Strickbau, or laced wood beam construction The challenge with such a construction method is the limit that is placed on the size of openings that can be achieved Caminada worked with engineer Jurg Conzett to overcome this problem by involving composite wood and concrete floors to provide extra stability Project is not public! 1995 Structural engineer Gion A Caminada Jurg Conzett jrhartley In the centre of Duvin, next to the post office 24

27 photo: Ferdinand Hauser Thusis Home for the Elderly Compognastrasse Thusis The design of this building is defined by four conceptual decisions Firstly, the 'backyard' as a spacious and sheltering green: the existing small park is considered a valuable place for shelter and leisure Secondly, the main entrance as a formulated village plaza: a small square has been created in front of the retirement home, debarking the entrance and creating a welcoming atmosphere, while at the same time establishing a spatial reference to the village life Thirdly, transitions and connections are implemented in the design: the design of the floor plans offers a continuous transition between the public space outside to the common room next to the entrance area and the meeting area in front of the apartments and privacy inside Lastly, the private apartment as a retreat with privacy: to correspond to individual needs, different kinds of apartments are offered to create the largest possible amount of options to choose from photo: Ferdinand Hauser Public access unknown!
