2 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: ING Real Estate Nationale Nederlanden Rašínovo Nábreží Prague The body language of the two towers nicknamed it dancing building and "Fred and Ginger Prominently located along the River Vltava in a historic district, it is one of Pragues most controversial buildings The site was originally occupied by a Neo-renaissance house from the end of the 19th century, destroyed during bombing in 1945, its remains finally removed in 1960 The neighboring house (with a small globe on the roof) was co-owned by Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel, who lived there from his childhood until the mid-1990s He ordered Vlado Milunic to make the first architectural study Afterwards the Dutch bank ING agreed to build a house there, and asked Milunic to invite a world-renowned architect Milunic first asked Jean Nouvel, he rejected the invitation because of the small size of the site (491 square meters); he then asked Frank Gehry, and he accepted the challenge Gehry had an almost unlimited budget, because ING wanted to create an icon in Prague photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 3 photo: Wojciech Krynski photo: Wojciech Krynski Apartment Polska Olomouc The conversion of a grain silo by C+HO_aR and Tomas Pejpek is an unusual, if not unique project The structure, dating back to the interwar years, stands just outside the historical part of Olomouc and blends seamlessly with the neighbouring buildings The abandoned silo and the adjacent facility building were bought by a local businessman, who decided to convert it into a villa for his family 24 meters above the ground, the kitchen and living room have been incorporated into the recreated shape of the original structure Above is a lookout level, a separate structure when viewed from outside, but in fact integrated with the living room Finished in grey plaster, it folds around the glass façade A steel cuboid structure finished in white plaster perches somewhat gingerly on top of the building 10 meters above the ground, a garden suspended on an openwork structure is being created This idea of having a garden invisible from below was inspired by Rem Koolhaas' 'Delirious New York' Project is not public! 2007 Client C+HO ar Private Hubert_Trammer photo: Wojciech Krynski 3

4 photo: Petr Parolek photo: Petr Parolek Brno Airport Terminal Letiste Brno-Turany Brno The new terminal building at Brno airport brings to mind all sorts of things Looking at the skylights one is put in mind a streamlined shark, while the skin itself, in a pattern of hexagonal titanium-zinc plates that covers both roof and façades, is more reminiscent of a snake With its accentuated entrance, its also presents itself as a symbolic arch, marking the arrival or departure of visitors In fact, what fascinated young local architect Petr Parolek most when designing this building, were the logistics of travel, people's movements and the speed and aerodynamics of airplanes Its sculptural shape stands in sharp contrast to the functionalist, box-like buildings typical of Brno's architectural style, and forms a new landmark for the town Although the dark monolith looks quite imperforate from the outside, it opens up from the inside through its transparent, high-tech steel structure and rooflights, whose curves emulate those of the outer shell photo: Petr Parolek 2006 Cooperating designer Structural engineer Structural engineer Client Petr Parolek FA Parolli Foboz 97 OKF design Southern Moravian Region Kirsten_Hannema Getting to the aerodrome by car is very simple, as the aerodrome is located still within the town territory, next to the D1 Brno-Olomouc motorway Driving in the direction from Prague, at km 201 there is a motorway exit marked "Slatina" and the off-turn to the aerodrome is distinctly marked The aerodrome is 2 km from the motorway exit 4

5 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Zizkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady Prague The Zizkov Television Tower is a uniquely-designed tower built in Prague between 1985 and 1992 It stands high above the city's traditional skyline from its position on top of a hill in the district of Zizkov, from which it takes its namethe structure of the tower is unconventional; it consists of three concrete pillars that carry cabinets for the transmitters, a restaurant and cafe, and three observation rooms From afar, the tower resembles a rocket launchpad The tower is 216 metres (709 feet) high, with the observation decks at 100 metres (328 feet) and the tower restaurant and cafe situated at 63 metres (207 feet) in the lower 'pods' Elevators, equipped with speedometers, transport passengers to the different levels at a rate of 4m/s The tower weighs tons and is also used as meteorological observatory It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers 1992 Main designer, Vaclav Aulicky Alex Bem Jiri Kozak pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski Everyday 10:00-23:30 5

6 photo: Helen Postawka photo: Helen Postawka Villa Tugendhat Cernopolní Brno Villa Tugendhat in Brno,, was built for Fritz and Gerta Tugendhat, an entrepreneuring couple in the textile industry Employing Mies van der Rohe, Mr Tugendhat stressed that he was "utterly horrified by rooms full of figurines and blankets" The villa, built between , consists of three floors On the first one (the basement floor), utility areas for maintenance and technical operations of the house are located The second, the main floor, contains a representative living room, a library, a winter garden and a dining room On the third floor are bedrooms and a bathroom The building is constructed with a steel frame, which permits to create a spatial and bright interior The whole interior of the house was also designed especially for the Tugendhats, with the use of sophisticated materials like travertine, milk glass, chrome-coated metal, stainless steel, honey-yellow onyx and exotic wood photo: Helen Postawka 1930 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe helenita Wednesday - Sunday: / There are only guided tours, which are provided every hour / Last admission: 1700 Tram connection: 3, 5, 11 / Get off at the Children's Hospital 6

7 Deer Moat Pathway U Prasného mostu Prague The pathway through the Deer Moat to Prague Castle, designed by Josef Pleskot AP Atelier in 2002, is a truly wonderful experience The entrance is somewhat hidden from the tourist traffic and is a perfect retreat from the crowd The tunnel is composed primarily of arching brick patterns, alternating in length to create a smooth and simple appearance This is coupled with the accent lights that wash only one side of the tube The result is a beautiful and solemn experience that greatly contrasts with the bright airy feeling of the exterior on both ends (text from website GOA The Cultural Exchange) photo: Piotr Krajewski 2002 Josef Pleskot pkrajewski_pl It is quite hard to find the tunnel You have to go down from U Prasného mostu (bridge) to Deer Moat Park and then try to find the pathway under the 'bridge', between the two sides of the park 7

9 photo: Adrian Ewig Mariansky Bridge Decinska Usti nad Labem The shape of the bridge was influenced by different parameters: On the left riverbanks, below the Marianska skala (rock), there is a highly frequented and narrow corridor of railway service and automobile traffic In addition to this, due to the strong bend of the river before the bridge, the Danube is much deeper along the left river bank and therefore on this side used for shipping traffic So it was clear that the pylon had to stand next to the right-hand riverbank Yet, it stands still in the water, otherwise the bridge would need to be much higher photo: Adrian Ewig 1998 Roman Koucky AdrianEwig 9
