3 Faculty of ure Thakurova Prague The new building of the Czech Technical University in Prague (CVUT) filled the last empty plot of the university campus designed in the regulatory plan by prof Engel in 1924 The new building is oriented towards the entrance axes of the CVUT campus It is turned in the direction of the entrance by an open courtyard, delimited only by two facades and a pillar The building content is concentrated around this entry space in a V-shape The new building is conceived as an 8-floor building with a firm shape and a relatively heavy façade The entire structure is comprised of bricks and only the entrance part exposes the concrete construction of the structure The house is cut by three covered atria Large auditoriums rise from the volume in the North- East direction as add-on, covered with sheet metal masses photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is public! 2011 Alena Sramkova AdrianEwig 3

6 photo: Nazar Leskiw Kolbenova Metro Station Kolbenova Prague The aim of the brief was to design this metro station vestibule into an existing brutal concrete structure built as a pedestal for an eight-floor building The site is placed in an former industrial outskirt of Prague, freestanding factory and solitaire warehouse urban area, settled in the beginning of 20th century The intention of careful recycling the former structure led to the decision not to touch the existing concrete construction at all The architects wrapped it in a light artificial skin, consisting partly of glass, partly of ethernite boards and steel mesh - like a porous skin the façade opens wherever the function needs Strictly used lightweight partitions avoid any confrontation with the mass of the concrete The design also prepared all infrastructure and facilities for future extension The public space of the entrance vestibule detaches from the service background with a reflective metal wall with stainless steel strips surface that mirrors the street traffic photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is public! 2003 DUM Architekti Nazar 6

8 photo: Viktor Tonner photo: Viktor Tonner Prague National Technical Library Technická Prague photo: Viktor Tonner In 2000 Projektil Architekti won the competition for the National Technical Library on the Czech Technical University's Dejvicka campus The library features six floors above grade and three floors below The latter houses parking, storage and other non-daylight functions, and the former's mass sits behind a pleasing double-wall glass façade, softened by the doughnut-shaped building's rounded corners Approaching the stand-alone building from the surrounding campus, the library veils its content behind the finely proportioned glazing A prominent horizontal band and matching vertical marks break up an otherwise homogenous façade Access from any of the four sides is via recessed portals that give way to a central atrium It is this space that is the heart of the project, a colourful space not anticipated by the exterior's formal treatment or lack of colour (text from wwwarchidoseorg) Project is public! 10 photo: Nazar Leskiw Keystone Office Building Pobrezni Prague This office building stands at a kind of gateway situation at a prominent situation in Karlín, a district of Prague that is undergoing rapid change, at the corner of Pobrezni Street and Saldova Street The ground floor, taller than the other levels, contains shops and showrooms while the upper floors are occupied by office space The external appearance of the building takes up geometrical themes found in Czech Cubism at the start of the 20th century The volumetric concept of the façade creates an ambivalently legible network of forms oriented in different directions The double-layered façade not only produces a sculptural outer skin, but also improves the performance of the windows in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation Through the contrast to the exterior the impressive entrance hall establishes a certain formal tension Here high-quality materials and expensive surfaces are used The hall is clad half with chrome steel and half with terrazzo and stucco lustro Project is not public! 2010 Supplier EM2N Alucobond Europe AdrianEwig 10

11 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Corso I Krizikova 36a Prague As occurs in many european cities, former industrial buildings have lost their original purpose and must be transformed to accommodate other uses This is the case of corso, an office block that forms part of an ambitious development plan for the entire Karlin district We wanted to modernize a quarter without depriving it of its historical roots: Corso is an example of a former industrial building which has been transformed into a modern, efficient work center The original building has been preserved and its base renovated The new roof is of glass, and red stucco arcades highlight the composition of the existing ground floor The aim here is to maintain a dialogue between light and shadow, solidity and transparency; between the language of classical architecture and modern materials Project is not public! 19 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Kavci Hory Residence K sídlisti Prague The ADNS architectural studio has completed its design of a set of two buildings The twelve-storey "A Building" in particular, thanks to its unique opening, evokes a smooth continuation of the adjoining natural park into the green area of the prestigious residential district as it slopes down to the Vltava River This relieving element is one of the features that gives the Kavcí Hory Residence a dimension of generous light and space solutions, which is reflected in the entire project's architectural design To a large extent, the project exploits the combination of luxurious and state-of-the-art materials in the interiors, using natural stone on the facade, glass and an exotic wood feature on its terraces The flats have been designed in such a way as to provide a unique view of the Vltava River, the historical part of Prague and the Central Park, as a foreground to the newly developed commercial and residential quarter photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is public! 2010 ADNS Nazar 19

23 Deer Moat Pathway U Prasného mostu Prague The pathway through the Deer Moat to Prague Castle, designed by Josef Pleskot AP Atelier in 2002, is a truly wonderful experience The entrance is somewhat hidden from the tourist traffic and is a perfect retreat from the crowd The tunnel is composed primarily of arching brick patterns, alternating in length to create a smooth and simple appearance This is coupled with the accent lights that wash only one side of the tube The result is a beautiful and solemn experience that greatly contrasts with the bright airy feeling of the exterior on both ends (text from website GOA The Cultural Exchange) photo: Piotr Krajewski Project is public! 2002 Josef Pleskot pkrajewski_pl It is quite hard to find the tunnel You have to go down from U Prasného mostu (bridge) to Deer Moat Park and then try to find the pathway under the 'bridge', between the two sides of the park 23

24 photo: Jeroen Apers Metropol Hotel Národní Prague Metropol Hotel Prague is a new 4-star design hotel in the centre of the Czech capital Prague Its nine-storey building with an all-glass façade was completed in 2007 The hotel is located on Narodni Street in a place where the romantically winding lanes of the Old Town meet Prague's boulevards pulsating with life From the rooftop sun deck, with the picturesque cityscape of the centuries-old town spreading before you, you will understand why Prague is called the 'City of a Hundred Spires' (text from website Metropol Hotel) Project is public! 25 photo: Ester Havlová photo: Ester Havlová Eucon Building Ulice Chlumova 204/ Prague This mixed-use building in Prague, comprising six residential aboveground storeys, two ground-floor shops, a two-level basement car park and an office block, was built after the demolition of four old housing blocks In architectural heritage areas like Zizkov, new developments are subjected to strict conditions, so the building had to adhere to the neighbouring street and cornice line as well as articulating the front face of the building to reflect its original four-part composition Since no conditions were imposed on the design of the residential courtyard, the architects seized the opportunity to create a richer world here: the different apartment sizes are reflected in the colours of their entrance doors and the owner's maisonette flat is raised on pillars on the roof of the office section The roof lights suggest prefabricated sewerage shafts while the maisonette recalls old Zizkov workshops, showing how well the architects have studied the history of the place Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Client Fránek s Klara Caskova Eucon Ltd Aleksandr_Skalicky photo: Ester Havlová Zizkov is a neighbourhood of Prague, also known as Prague 3 Zizkov 25

30 photo: Jan Kudej photo: Community center Za Brumlovkou Prague While looking for an architectural form the architects have faced a task that a simple and unpretending building reflecting its purpose would look appropriately in the neighbourhood of office buildings of an absolutely different scale Even the so far smallest Brumlovka fitness building was much bigger We found a generous format of a single 'window' into the 'pronaos', an exterior covered open vestibule in front of the entrance, as the means of balancing the surrounding buildings' scale Its horizontal proportion is directly derived from the elementary prism of the whole building, also horizontal one and of the same dimension The window is the key motive of the façade and the whole building; figures of people passing behind or standing here are partly hidden from the busy street life behind a screen of bamboo trees photo: Jan Kudej Client Aulik Fiser s Maranatha os OndraT 30

33 photo: 4A architekti photo: 4A architekti Sacre Coeur Svédská Prague The building's site slopes 15 m and basically sits on top of the Strahov tunnel roof structure and an adjacent civil protection bunkerin accordance with all site restrictions and our vision of an urban apartment block, we designed a compact building volume whose roof line reflects the slope of the surrounding streets and so allows for the creation of a terraced roofscape This simple principle reflects the main potential of the site and offers mostly all apartments panoramic views to the city and surrounding parks The leading visual impact is seen from the southern crossroads junction in the form of an "inverse" building corner with a free parterre (left open) Views through this open point allows visual contact with the green inner yard and also accommodates the diagonal steel structure which transmits loads between the orthogonal reinforced concrete grid of the residential block and the foundation piles, respecting the diagonal body of the tunnel photo: 4A architekti Project is not public! 34 photo: Filip Flapal photo: Filip Flapal Born again Na Cerné hore 1685/ Prague A careful restoration returned the original spirit of the 1930s to this house situated in Prague's Hanspaulka The functionalist building was in very poor shape when the investor bought it Several extensions had completely disfigured the exterior, while the interior had suffered from some insensitive changes by previous owners The architects Kyzlink helped to fulfill the investor's determined vision to return the distinctive features to the 30's architecture to the house The architect cleared the building of all the superfluous extensions and re-integrated the rooms that had recently been divided by walls Original furniture replicas as well as traditional first-class materials have been used in the course of the restoration - natural stone and solid wood date back to the architectural standard from the time between the two world wars The restored house offers the owners both comfort and privacy and well representative space for their social life Project is not public! 2012 Kyzlink KYZLINK photo: Filip Flapal 34
