3 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: ING Real Estate Nationale Nederlanden Rašínovo Nábreží Prague The body language of the two towers nicknamed it dancing building and "Fred and Ginger Prominently located along the River Vltava in a historic district, it is one of Pragues most controversial buildings The site was originally occupied by a Neo-renaissance house from the end of the 19th century, destroyed during bombing in 1945, its remains finally removed in 1960 The neighboring house (with a small globe on the roof) was co-owned by Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel, who lived there from his childhood until the mid-1990s He ordered Vlado Milunic to make the first architectural study Afterwards the Dutch bank ING agreed to build a house there, and asked Milunic to invite a world-renowned architect Milunic first asked Jean Nouvel, he rejected the invitation because of the small size of the site (491 square meters); he then asked Frank Gehry, and he accepted the challenge Gehry had an almost unlimited budget, because ING wanted to create an icon in Prague photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 4 photo: Ester Havlová photo: Ester Havlová Eucon Building Ulice Chlumova 204/ Prague This mixed-use building in Prague, comprising six residential aboveground storeys, two ground-floor shops, a two-level basement car park and an office block, was built after the demolition of four old housing blocks In architectural heritage areas like Zizkov, new developments are subjected to strict conditions, so the building had to adhere to the neighbouring street and cornice line as well as articulating the front face of the building to reflect its original four-part composition Since no conditions were imposed on the design of the residential courtyard, the architects seized the opportunity to create a richer world here: the different apartment sizes are reflected in the colours of their entrance doors and the owner's maisonette flat is raised on pillars on the roof of the office section The roof lights suggest prefabricated sewerage shafts while the maisonette recalls old Zizkov workshops, showing how well the architects have studied the history of the place Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Fránek s Klara Caskova Eucon Ltd Aleksandr_Skalicky photo: Ester Havlová Zizkov is a neighbourhood of Prague, also known as Prague 3 Zizkov 4

7 Residential Building Kavci Hory 1 Nad cementárnou Prague This housing complex consist out of 12 high-class compartments divided into two different masses It's located in a spectacular area in Prague 4 with unique view over the Prague-city scape The design explores new ways of lush living It is inspired by residential buildings from the thirties The building acts as a connecting link between the nearby tv building mega structure and the so-called villa-houses Project is not public! 9 Zizkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady Prague The Zizkov Television Tower is a uniquely-designed tower built in Prague between 1985 and 1992 It stands high above the city's traditional skyline from its position on top of a hill in the district of Zizkov, from which it takes its namethe structure of the tower is unconventional; it consists of three concrete pillars that carry cabinets for the transmitters, a restaurant and cafe, and three observation rooms From afar, the tower resembles a rocket launchpad The tower is 216 metres (709 feet) high, with the observation decks at 100 metres (328 feet) and the tower restaurant and cafe situated at 63 metres (207 feet) in the lower 'pods' Elevators, equipped with speedometers, transport passengers to the different levels at a rate of 4m/s The tower weighs tons and is also used as meteorological observatory It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers 1992 Main designer, Vaclav Aulicky Alex Bem Jiri Kozak pkrajewski_pl Everyday 10:00-23:30 9

11 Footbridge on riverbank Rohanske Rohanské nábre Prague Construction of footbridge is a part of administrative and business centre River City Prague The footbridge brings there communication and architectonic element which becomes a gateway to this new area It creates distinctive signal which catches visitor's attention by arrival from both sides - Karlín (part of city) and riverbank Rohanské The footbridge is horizontally and vertically spatially curved arc That is the reason why it looks very interesting, especially from the Karlín's view The shape anomaly is even more emphasized by contrast between smooth bottom edge and gradual upper side of the arc which follows the shape of stairway and bridge floor The entire composition is made of three in color harmony materials These are - grinding stainless steel of handrail and stair edges, grey-black matt steel structure of the footbridge and sand hue of flooring (text from architects website) 2002 FACT RCP ISC, sro pkrajewski_pl 11

12 Nile House Rohanské nábre Prague This is a multifunctional building with a predominantly administrative function with seven floors above ground and three below ground On the ground floor there is an entrance hall, shops, services and offices On the other floors (1st to 6th floor) there are rentable office spaces The first and second underground floors serve as the parking and equipment areas of the building On the third level there are induction pipes of the ventilation system and ventilation pant rooms urally the most remarkable part of the building is the atrium, where corkscrew stairs dominate the space The atrium area is planted with full-grown trees The bearing structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete Natural stone (green granite) is used for the external cladding of the building The office space façades oriented to the atrium are glass fronted A system of steel columns and girders is used for the bearing structure of the atrium Public access unknown! 13 River Diamond Apartments Rohanské nábr Prague The building is composed of two wings perpendicular to the river and a southern wing placed along Rohanské Nábre street The south wing is designed as a simple solid volume with flat façades whose task is to be a 'partner' to large and monumental office buildings of the River City complex It is clad in sandstone Its façade is an abstract composition of glazed planes of varying size, horizontal fragments of cornices, large shopfront of ground floor showroom and showroom entry canopy placed on the central axis of this façade The southern façade is perceived by developers and architects as crucial in terms of presentation of the building to the city Whilst the south wing is a piece of monumental city architecture, the two other wings are more residential in nature The two wings perpendicular to the river are richer in form and articulation 2005 Safer Hajek and Associates Riverbank Development sro pkrajewski_pl 13

20 Deer Moat Pathway U Prasného mostu Prague The pathway through the Deer Moat to Prague Castle, designed by Josef Pleskot AP Atelier in 2002, is a truly wonderful experience The entrance is somewhat hidden from the tourist traffic and is a perfect retreat from the crowd The tunnel is composed primarily of arching brick patterns, alternating in length to create a smooth and simple appearance This is coupled with the accent lights that wash only one side of the tube The result is a beautiful and solemn experience that greatly contrasts with the bright airy feeling of the exterior on both ends (text from website GOA The Cultural Exchange) 2002 Josef Pleskot pkrajewski_pl It is quite hard to find the tunnel You have to go down from U Prasného mostu (bridge) to Deer Moat Park and then try to find the pathway under the 'bridge', between the two sides of the park 20

21 EURO Palace Václavské námestí Prague The transparent glass wall, which has an 'aerodynamically-curved' shape, defines the immaterial corner volume - its delicacy is possible due to the double-glass façade with ventilated airspace By contrast, a second part of the project presents the corner as a cubical, austere body, which is formed by a layer of adjustable golden screens The screens regulate the interior's luminous comfort In the most exposed spot of the building, the inner cube breaks through the calm horizontal body and creates a dominant tower - its height equivalent to the nearby Koruna Palace The light glass coat, which 'calms down' the general effect of the building, hides the administrative mass in relation to its neighbouring, historical buildings (text from architects' website) 2002 DaM LBB Reality sro pkrajewski_pl 21

22 Residential Complex Na Krutci Na krutci Prague The lot of land designated for this new residential complex is situated on the boundary between the civic housing area and the open countryside The concept of the solution emerges exactly from this fact The upper, only slightly-sloping southern part of the area, connects with its designed orthogonal structure to the street pattern of the neighbouring residential suburb Residential houses, terraced family houses and the entrance building are situated in this area The eastern part of the urban plan comprises the sports hall with outdoor tennis courts, playgrounds for other ball games and a leisure-time grassland with a children's playground The row of four residential houses, situated on the edge where the area starts to slope steeply northwards, forms a dividing line in the character of the buildings (text from Project is not public! 2008 Kuba & Pilar Architekti pkrajewski_pl 22

23 Block of Flats Gymnastická Gymnastická 2418/ Prague This block of flats, designed at the crossing point of Gymnastická and Za Strahovem streets in Prague 6, was initiated under the working title 'A block on the ground zero' The specific lot, located in a very attractive area, has significantly influenced the architectonical, construction and static solutions of the building (text from archiweb) Project is not public! 2007 Atelier ANTA pkrajewski_pl 23

24 Restaurant Praha Expo 58 Letenské sady Prague The restaurant Expo 58 was built together with an exhibition pavilion, in order to represent former Czechoslovakia at the World Expo in Brussels in 1958 After the huge success at the exhibition, the building was dismantled and transfered back to Prague The building was then used for its original purpose The restaurant was sold in 1991 to a private owner and further changes of owners, problematic managment and vandalism almost led to its destruction In 2001, the building was restored On the one hand, the restaurant was saved, but its purpose was changed as well Also, the interior of the newly reconstructed building has nothing to do with the original one Currently, the Expo restaurant is the domicile of an advertising agency (text from Public access unknown! 1960 Main designer, Frantisek Cubr Josef Hruby Zdenek Pokorný pkrajewski_pl 24

25 Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia Wilsonova Prague The building of the Federal Parliament of Czechoslovakia was built in 1973/74 by architect Karel Prager After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, it was used by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty until November 2008 Today, it is property of the National Museum and will be reconstructed for museum expositions and connected to the historical building of the National Museum, adjacent to the right (text from Wikimapia) Public access unknown! 1974 Karel Prager pkrajewski_pl 25

34 photo: afarch photo: afarch Office Building Na Vítezné Pláni Na Vítezné pláni Prague While designing this building the architects recognized the unique position of this place within the Prague relief and spatial relations The relief edge starting at the site ends by the Vysehrad (castle) creating a skyline for Vinohrady (quarter) across the valley Despite the robust character of the Nuselský most (bridge) and nearby buildings resting on this edge, they tried to follow the fine features of the dominant Karlov (church) and Vysehrad; they wanted to adhere to the accents whose scale does not oust them from the urban environment, but make it its natural component So, the building designed in close vicinity of the Police Headquarters establishes a transition between the XL scale of the front of the Nuselský bridge and surrounding blocks of flats Project is not public! 35 photo: Jan Kudej photo: Community center Za Brumlovkou Prague While looking for an architectural form the architects have faced a task that a simple and unpretending building reflecting its purpose would look appropriately in the neighbourhood of office buildings of an absolutely different scale Even the so far smallest Brumlovka fitness building was much bigger We found a generous format of a single 'window' into the 'pronaos', an exterior covered open vestibule in front of the entrance, as the means of balancing the surrounding buildings' scale Its horizontal proportion is directly derived from the elementary prism of the whole building, also horizontal one and of the same dimension The window is the key motive of the façade and the whole building; figures of people passing behind or standing here are partly hidden from the busy street life behind a screen of bamboo trees photo: Jan Kudej Aulik Fiser s Maranatha os OndraT 35

36 photo: Andrea Thiel Lhotakova photo: Andrea Thiel Lhotakova Family house in Kunratice Na Lhotech Prague This plot's main value that influenced the concept of this two-storied house with a cellar below a part of it is its direct link to Kunratický les (forest) The main living quarters, the viewing centreline passing through the entire ground floor and the two-storied vertical space are opened towards the forest The house was designed as a relatively small one respecting the overall suitability, for one part of glazing transforms into a roof here Yet it is sufficient enough to see the selected strip of the garden, forest and sky as a whole, in one vertical format photo: Andrea Thiel Lhotakova Project is not public! 37 photo: Aulik Fiser s photo: Aulik Fiser s Office building Alpha Vyskocilova Prague The concept is strongly affected by the close main road 5 kvetna with a slip ramp is of a straight-line highway character It establishes a residual area, which is a typical feature of civil structures outside a city defined by the sharp intersection with Vykocilova (street) and two different levels of both roads It was the need to define the building in terms of the highway, against its lines determining the building's outline the highway never had reckoned with, that was so important in course of searching for the form of the building The turf on the highway's slope hiding a part of the building establishes a reducing element between the town and out-of-town environment photo: Aulik Fiser s Project is not public! 2003 Aulik Fiser s BBC Building Alpha as, developer Passerinvest OndraT 37
