5 photo: Nazar Leskiw Erwin Building Kischova Prague House Erwin, which filled an empty corner site, is reviving the corner and makes it more attractive The House accepts the height of surrounding buildings and highlights the corner by shaping its volume The facade is divided into horizontal strips filled with window openings and façade cladding panels The underground floor is designed under the whole area of the courtyard and its roof is made as a green chill out area Thus provides the view from flats to calm greenery The facade is made up of titanium-zinc panels and horizontal strips The window openings on the facade are alternating with the plastered fillings and titanium-zinc panels Project is public! 2012 QARTA Architektura Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 5

11 photo: Nazar Leskiw Keystone Office Building Pobrezni Prague This office building stands at a kind of gateway situation at a prominent situation in Karlín, a district of Prague that is undergoing rapid change, at the corner of Pobrezni Street and Saldova Street The ground floor, taller than the other levels, contains shops and showrooms while the upper floors are occupied by office space The external appearance of the building takes up geometrical themes found in Czech Cubism at the start of the 20th century The volumetric concept of the façade creates an ambivalently legible network of forms oriented in different directions The double-layered façade not only produces a sculptural outer skin, but also improves the performance of the windows in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation Through the contrast to the exterior the impressive entrance hall establishes a certain formal tension Here high-quality materials and expensive surfaces are used The hall is clad half with chrome steel and half with terrazzo and stucco lustro 2010 Supplier EM2N Alucobond Europe AdrianEwig 11

13 Cornlofts Saldova Saldova Prague An old 19th century oil factory in Prague's Karlin district was a determining factor in the re-arrangement of the urban space As Bertolt Brecht would have said, the building represents the "footprint in the snow" of the ideas developed by Baumschlager Eberle The non-specific use of the extensive spaces is evident even on the old plans, highlighting the resource-sparing durability of such architecture The objective is not to protect a historic building at any price, but to maintain the quality of the preserved structure as a sound basis for the enlargement of the area by means of a new residential building The external envelope of the factory provides the material and conceptual basis for an intervention aimed at producing multi-storey apartments Baumschlager Eberle succeed in reflecting Le Corbusier's sophisticated spatial organisation of the unitées d'habitation in the old building 2009 baumschlager & eberle AdrianEwig 13

14 Apartmenthouse with a Gym Lodecka Prague The overall design concept was based on the box-of-bricks principle consisting of spatial units The position of the vertical staircase dictated by the hall?s presence defines the layout type featuring an open horizontal corridor There are sandwiched volumes between the layers of floor slabs, by their size corresponding with apartment units There where the mass volume must be made less dense conforming it to the neighbouring buildings, where more natural light and air must be let in, where an untraditional open space must be created allowing contact between people, the bricks are left out As the flats on the top level are maisonettes, the body of the unit expands two storeys up crowning the whole composition The flats are mostly of minimum size allowing lateral ventilation; due to their orientation to the south and generous glazing the flats enjoy plenty of natural light and sun 2007 DaM AdrianEwig 14

21 Rohan Rohanske nabrezi Prague The expression of this building is shaped by the order and the rhythmisation of the windows, the portals and the colonnade The building has 8 upper floors of which two are recessed Towards the street Rohanske nabrezi there is the characteristic colonnade that rises to the height of two floors and is publicly accessible The building is segmented into three bays These give the building plasticity and let the entrances stand out, highlighted by portals from black granite The appearance of the building oscillates between modernism and classicism - between white plaster and a base from light stone cladding and a rhytmised facade The architect looked for inspration in Vienna and Prague's Vinohrady district to create a building that - concerning fashion - lasts a bit longer than its fancy neighbours 2012 Architekti Hrusa AdrianEwig 21

34 photo: Piotr Krajewski Footbridge on riverbank Rohanske Rohanské nábre Prague Construction of footbridge is a part of administrative and business centre River City Prague The footbridge brings there communication and architectonic element which becomes a gateway to this new area It creates distinctive signal which catches visitor's attention by arrival from both sides - Karlín (part of city) and riverbank Rohanské The footbridge is horizontally and vertically spatially curved arc That is the reason why it looks very interesting, especially from the Karlín's view The shape anomaly is even more emphasized by contrast between smooth bottom edge and gradual upper side of the arc which follows the shape of stairway and bridge floor The entire composition is made of three in color harmony materials These are - grinding stainless steel of handrail and stair edges, grey-black matt steel structure of the footbridge and sand hue of flooring (text from architects website) Project is public! 2002 Client FACT RCP ISC, sro pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 34

35 photo: afarch photo: afarch Office Building Na Vítezné Pláni Na Vítezné pláni Prague While designing this building the architects recognized the unique position of this place within the Prague relief and spatial relations The relief edge starting at the site ends by the Vysehrad (castle) creating a skyline for Vinohrady (quarter) across the valley Despite the robust character of the Nuselský most (bridge) and nearby buildings resting on this edge, they tried to follow the fine features of the dominant Karlov (church) and Vysehrad; they wanted to adhere to the accents whose scale does not oust them from the urban environment, but make it its natural component So, the building designed in close vicinity of the Police Headquarters establishes a transition between the XL scale of the front of the Nuselský bridge and surrounding blocks of flats Floor area/size m² Client Aulik Fiser s SKANSKA Property, sro OndraT photo: afarch 35

38 photo: 4A architekti photo: 4A architekti Sacre Coeur Svédská Prague The building's site slopes 15 m and basically sits on top of the Strahov tunnel roof structure and an adjacent civil protection bunkerin accordance with all site restrictions and our vision of an urban apartment block, we designed a compact building volume whose roof line reflects the slope of the surrounding streets and so allows for the creation of a terraced roofscape This simple principle reflects the main potential of the site and offers mostly all apartments panoramic views to the city and surrounding parks The leading visual impact is seen from the southern crossroads junction in the form of an "inverse" building corner with a free parterre (left open) Views through this open point allows visual contact with the green inner yard and also accommodates the diagonal steel structure which transmits loads between the orthogonal reinforced concrete grid of the residential block and the foundation piles, respecting the diagonal body of the tunnel photo: 4A architekti Floor area/size m², Interior architect Client 4A architekti 4A_architekti SATPO 38

40 photo: Ester Havlová photo: Ester Havlová Bilka Barn Bílka Bilka The barn consists of 60 cm thick stone walls and lacks foundations The desire to leave the appearance mostly untouched, combined with the necessity to insulate (external insulation would have changed the appearance entirely, internal insulation is problematic with damp walls) led to the idea to build a new building inside the old building (house inside a house) The old stone building becomes a rain cover and a new internal timber structure serves as wind proof insulation A non-heated space forms in between old and new and extends the residential spaces Grand frameless openings are blurring the borders of the timber building and connect the Inside, the Outside and the In-between Two large barn doors - north and south - form an organic connection with the surrounding nature The result is a house of changing views and perspectives: in, out and through Floor area/size m² A2F s filipnosek photo: Ester Havlová Near Borislav on the E55 between Dresden and Prague 40
