2 photo: Tamas Bujnovszky photo: Tamas Bujnovszky Paris Department Store Restoration Andrássy út Budapest The refurbished Paris Department Store, one of the most important buildings in Budapest's shopping tradition, reopened at the end of 2009 The store was built in on the site of a former neo-renaissance Casino building In the 1960s, the building underwent a major refurbishment that affected the style and use of the building It operated as a famous department store typical of the socialist era until 1991 when it was vacated The aim of the youngest refurbishment by TIBA Stúdió was to restore the original space concept of the building, to bring back the original values as much as possible considering both monumental aspects and the needs of the future users, whilst adding contemporary elements that correspond with the historical style of the building, providing it freshness and boldness The steel-glass, crystal-like shell structure on the top floor has extended the usable areas of the building The refurbished roof terrace offers superb views over the city photo: Tamas Bujnovszky m² TIBA s Studio ORCO Property Group TIBA 2

3 photo: Tamás Bujnovszky photo: Civertan Hungarian Autoklub Berda József Budapest The architects won the commission for this project on a competition for a new iconic headquarter of the Hungarian Autoklub The main gesture of the building is a ribbon that wraps around the office spaces on seven floors, while articulating a letter 'a' As the site is located near the Danube bridge, local politicians appreciated to have a building that works as a point of orientation for drivers that arrive to district Ujpest The main hall and service functions are found on the ground floor, while on the very top, under the arc is a rooftop terrace for representative meetings The looping strip is about 1,0 meter thick, it has a changing width and deforms as it articulates the loop The two component of the building comes back also in the material usage, the strip without openings with metal cladding, and the glass curtain wall of the wrapped building volume photo: Tamás Bujnovszky m² Vikar & Lukacs Hungarian Autoklub lukvik Monday to Friday :

5 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Fovam Station Fövám tér Budapest M4 is the new metro line in Budapest, that opened in march 2014 It's first section is completed, with 10 stations and a lenght of 7,4 km It connects South-Buda with the city center The line has been noted for its high costs and inordinate delays, 17 in total during construction "Fövám tér" station is a twin station of the Szent Gellért tér, similarily with a complex structure composed of a cut-and-cover box and tunnels The complexity of the structure is even greater, since here a new tunnel for the tramline and a new pedestrian subway had to be constructed, as well Having the new underground station, Fövám tér will become a new gateway of the historic downtown of Pest Only a complex structural system could fulfil the requirements emerging from the proximity of the Danube and the given construction site On that reason, the station is constructed of a cut-and-cover box and for tunnels The station is divided into two main stuctural parts as well as two building methods m² Spora s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 5

7 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Deák Palace Deák Ferenc u Budapest Deák Palace is a former apartment building located on a pedestrian street in the city centre of Budapest The commission was to transform the building into a flexible contemporary office building with retail on the ground and first floors Together with reconstructing the destroyed street facade using period photographs, the design respects the existing 19th century Neo-Baroque building whilst also creating a new transparent and open appearance The building allows various office layouts around a glazed central atrium space, maximizing the space available on five existing and two new floors as well as a roof terrace at the attic level The glazed atrium extends the entire height of the building, creating a focus for the office spaces and bringing in daylight down to the first floor The new floors are executed predominantly in clear glass, both to maximise the open character of the building and to create endless reflection on the glass screens of the atrium photo: Christian Richters m² Designed by Erick van Egeraat Designed_by_Erick_van_Egeraat Monday - Saturday: h 7

8 Graphisoft Park, BUILDING D Záhony Budapest In designing this two-structure project, a key consideration was to create a transition between the high-tech office park and the century-old buildings of the old Gas Works The architect achieved this by incorporating signature elements of both styles The facades and interiors feature wood and glass elements, but brick and stone surfaces are also visible The entrance lobby is cylindrical, an echo of the Gas Works clock towers nearby Parking is available both underground and in an open-air area at one side m² Technical engineer Structural engineer TEN Ottó Pfenningberger PLAN 31 Graphisoft Park Zo-Li 8

9 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd The Whale (The Bálna) Fövám tér Budapest The Danube was a very important transportation route in the 19th century: the main portion of wheat produced in was transported on ship To serve this water traffic, four public warehouses were built in the Pest side of the river between 1874 and 1881 By the beginning of the 21st century the buildings were in bad shape, on the road to dilapidation A project was launched to refurbish and use the warehouses in ways that meet the requirements of a 21st century, modern capital city The Dutch architect, Kas Oosterhuis, was commissioned to design a multifunctional complex from the four buildings preserving some of the original architectural elements The Whale - formerly known as the CET building became a project that not only rejuvenates impressive historic buildings, but it uses the architecture and innovative technology to create a mixed-use living space and improve urban spaces for the public photo: Dirk Verwoerd m², Artist Project manager ONL Oosterhuis Lénárd Marthijn Pool Porto Investment, Budapest dirkverwoerd Daily: h, Friday & Saturday: h Tram 2 or just walk along the river 9

10 Graphisoft Park Záhony Budapest This complex functions as both a restaurant and conference center, and thus contains no offices: only the ground-floor restaurant and the meeting rooms Compared to the Park?s earlier buildings, this one is notable for its regular geometric form: a cylindrical prism placed inside a square base, whose duality is emphasized by the materials The combination of visible concrete, wood, and dark-colored brick presents a break from the unified line of the riverbank structures? a distinct departure from the villa-like office buildings m², Interior architect Technical engineer Structural engineer TEN Zo-Li Ottó Pfenningberger PLAN 31 Graphisoft Park Kft 10

11 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters ING Head office Budapest Dózsa György út 84c 1068 Budapest The new ING Head Office is situated on Dózsa György Street facing Városliget Park in Budapest The brief called for a high quality office building with an internal layout that meets commercial market standards The formal concept is derived from the urban context Designed to be a 21st century transition between the orthogonal volume of the modernist Liget Center of 1949 on one side, and the late 19th century eclectic style villas typical of the area on the other, the massing is expressed as three volumes linked by glazed atrium spaces and bound together by stainless steel lines In succession to the Liget Center, the façade is free from the traditional placement of openings The façade design reflects the richness and complexity of historic façade treatments found throughout the city The building successfully marries the commercial requirements of the client to the architectural historic context of Budapest and contributes to a sensitive metamorphosis of the contemporary city photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! m² Designed by Erick van Egeraat ING Real Estate Development, Budapest Designed_by_Erick_van_Egeraat Take the subway to Hosok tere (Dózsa György út), and walk a bit 11
