1 Bia + Torbágy DEPARTMENTAL PROJECT 3 FALL 2017 DEPARTMENT FOR INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL BUILDING DESIGN COURSE DESCRIPTION The project site for Departmental Project 3 of the autumn semester 2017 is Biatorbágy, or rather Bia + Torbágy. Biatorbágy is a conurbation town with a population round (in 2015). It seems to be characteristic of the suburbs around the capital to have a number of jewels the majority of which are in a rather neglected condition waiting for a better fate. Likewise in Biatorbágy you can find a used-to-be anti-aircraft base, a neoclassical wine-press house or a mill under counted historic monument waiting for rediscovery. In these settlements while undergoing sometimes dramatic changes, attention was paid mainly on the new living areas. Old village or town centres were pushed into the background. Maybe the proportion of migration from and to the capital is now equilibrated and the originated smaller-bigger towns can start a quality development after the contradictory quantitative one. To emphasize quality developments based on autonomous values, characteristics. Bia and Torbágy were unified in 1966, however, the railway line separated the two villages until The adhesion happened quickly, the previous villages centres are still existing next to each other. Thus the once independent villages can be examined separately. Torbágy having gone through a stronger conversion is in a more difficult situation. Infrastructural interventions have partly disarranged even the street net, there are further disadvantages of the close town centre. It is Torbágy mainly affected by the noise pollution of the traffic of the motorway, railway and industrial park. On the other hand public transport is better, all basic service and institution are in walking distance. Bia lying a bit further from Budapest was less altered, could rather keep its original village character. The majority of the town s historic monuments are here as well, the historical surrounding around the castles covers the majority of the quarter. This duality is also reflected in the design sites. The plot next to the railway station is only 15 minutes from Kelenföld, the terminal of metro line no. 4. It is just perfect for hosting a firm s headquarters, or any other office functions. The used-to-be Ébner-mill in Bia is a protected historical monument, however, not the whole ensemble. Getting rid of the later extensions thus finding the original, it offers a number of possibilities together with the building site and parking place of the close polyclinic. In the almost totally built Tópart street there are still unbuilt sites. This quiet area can fit very well functions benefitting from the beautiful panorama, and less disturbing the residential area like the boarding house or the restorers workshop. The list of the functions takes into consideration the local needs and existing facilities. Nevertheless, design programs can be altered, combined, functions may be added with the consultant s agreement. According the contour lines there are big level differences in the area. The existing regulation plan attached is only a guideline, it is not compulsory, but changes should be supported by good arguments. In case of the mill plot a common layout may be prepared in team-work of 2-3 students), but the design task is mainly individual work. To understand the existing complex situation, to analyse the urban context and to define the degree of utilization are the most important part of this semester work.

Health centre + family aid and youth centre: The health centre is an institution run by independent entrepreneurs in buildings, facilities hired from the town. There is no need for extra common spaces, like reception etc. A covered open area for storing prams and bicycles with possible visual connection from the waiting rooms should be provided. For the health staff (both for men and women) social facilities (changing rooms, restrooms) and a kitchenette should be provided. a) family doctor s reception rooms (2) waiting rooms (with airlock and isolation of the infectious patients): 2x30 m2 reception room (for 1 doctor and 1 assistant each): min 15 m2 examining room (1 for each reception room): min 20 m2 laying room: 10 m2 patients changing room: 2x5 m2 room for taking blood sample: 15 m2 room for taking urinary sample: 15 m2 block of toilets: ~2x15 m2 (for patients) storage for cleaning materials: 5 m2 b) paediatrician s reception room (1) waiting rooms (with airlock and isolation of the infectious patients): 2x20 m2 reception room (for 1 doctor and 1 assistant): min 15 m2 examining room: m2 toilet with a baby dresser: 5 m2 (for patients) storage: 20 m2 c) health visitor s service (1) health visitor s room: 15 m2 examining room: min. 20 m2 nurslings changing room: 5 m2 suckling room: 5 m2 storage for cleaning materials: 5 m2

4 room for installation: as required Internal connection is required between the paediatrician s reception room and the health visitor s service. The waiting rooms of the paediatrician s reception room and the health visitor s service can have a common airlock, but should be separate rooms! Parking places should be provided within the plot: 50% of OTÉK (Hungarian Building Code). You can find historical maps on the site: and the publication about the town Biatorbágy város on the site: x The colony of artists may be designed for different plots and alternatives. However, in all cases it somehow should be connected to Hantai Simon born in Bia, becoming a world famous painter in France. xx The plot next to the station can be eventually divided for accommodating more smaller office buildings. Alternative possibilities can be: incubator house for start-up companies, headquarters of an engineering company, rentable office building. CONTENT AND FORMAL REQUIREMENTS Concept design (projected presentation): - layout 1:1000 (the mill plot a common layout may be prepared in team-work of 2-3 students) - presentation, documentation of one building of similar character as example (3-4 A4 pages) - elaboration of the design program, presentation of function - scale-model, presentation of the basic design ideas (master plan, scheme function min. 1:500) Preliminary design I. (projected presentation): This planning phase is focusing on the development of the architectural form, of the relation between space and mass, of the relation with the surrounding, and of the interior functional system. - site plan M=1:500, plans of the different levels, sections, elevations M=1:200 - perspective views, sketches, scale-model with surroundings

5 Preliminary design II.: The same as Preliminary design I., but only in case of unsuccessful presentation, or upon request. Final project (projected presentation + A3 form documentation): At the end of the semester detailed 1:100 documentation has to be prepared. (simplified program design ): - site plan at a scale of M=1:200, 500 with surroundings (buildings, garden, streets, walking ways, entrances, delivery entrances, flooring) - plans of all different levels with the name of the rooms marked 1:100 (1:200) - at least 2 different sections showing the structural solutions, dimensions 1:100 (1:200) - all facades with the used materials and 1:100 (1:200) - perspective view with the surrounding, street view, photomontage - technical description (main ideas, functional system, used materials) cca. 1 A4 page - Model min. scale M= 1:333 (paper, wood, plexi) Formal requirements: All drawings can be traditional hand- or CAD drawings or any other optional official scaled printed technique. Size: lying A3 form. The clear and correct technical presentation is important. A stable cover due to the plans dimensions with index is necessary. Models have to be submitted in boxes.
