1 PRESS RELEASE Carlo Moretti Award: a recognition to three young researchers of the University Iuav in Venice for an in-depth on Carlo Moretti, one of the highprofile contemporary glass designers On December 11 th 2009, at the seat of the Carlo Moretti company in Murano, three awards for a research work on the glass designer Carlo Moretti, who passed away in 2008, have been assigned. Supported by the family but on initiative of the staff, a collaboration with the University Iuav of Venice has been promoted with the aim of activating a tender of research on Carlo Moretti s role within the international panorama of glass design. During several months, participants focussed on different aspects of Carlo Moretti s work, developed within his company over the last 50 years, from 1958 to The University Iuav jury composed also by Giovanni Moretti, Carlo s brother and owner of the company selected and awarded Rosa Chiesa, doctorate in Design Sciences, Silvia Bianco and Elisa Davi, students in Industrial Design). The Carlo Moretti Prize is part of a articulated collaboration among the company and the University Iuav (Venice). In fact, it has also been approved a Scholarship, promoted by the Veneto Region and supported by the European Commission, having the Carlo Moretti company as partner for the living archive project.

2 The project aims to creating new professionals able to capitalize the historical heritage of a company as driving force for innovation. The recovery of our past as source of inspiration is particularly important in periods of crisis. It has to be also underlined the value of the relationship between entrepreneurship and research, between university and production, which is certainly a main factor that could help the stuck situation of Murano nowadays. Investing in university research is for the Carlo Moretti a great opportunity of reciprocal enrichment in both ways, sharing the know-how and opening up at the new generation of designers. And this is even more important for Murano, island inside an island, which is particularly suffering from isolation.

3 Carlo Moretti s biography Carlo Moretti (Venice, ) is one of the main protagonists of a prosperous season for Murano glass, evolving shapes and styles of the traditional local production to a more modern taste, made of simple and essential lines, mostly inspired by international design. Innovator and master of elegance, Carlo Moretti leaves behind a rich heritage of creativity and style, capable to place its objects and realisations as the Calici da collezione, the Cartoccio vase, or the more recent i Diversi glasses and i Piccoli vases, to be recognized, over 50 years of activity, with several awards and internationals prizes. Carlo Moretti gathered together, at the same time, different roles: entrepreneur but also designer of the Carlo Moretti firm, founded in 1958 together with his younger brother Giovanni. During the 80s he animated the creation of a number of consortiums on the island of Murano and, in particular, the establishment of the island s new museum of contemporary glass.

4 An artisan factory Established in 1958 by Carlo and Giovanni Moretti, the artisan factory Carlo Moretti s trademark represents a unique occurrence on the island of glass, mingling entrepreneurship and authorship in the works of art created in their furnace with the close collaboration of glass masters. For over 50 years, the firm founded by the Moretti brothers has drawn the attention of the international market due to its distinctive formula, which merges the centennial craftsmanship of the island s glass masters (handed down from father to son) with contemporary Italian design. When talking about glass, Carlo and Giovanni Moretti use a completely new language. Perhaps because they had to step up to the challenge when they were still very young, provided with that peculiar technical background which only a century-long family tradition and the artistic fertility of a place like Murano can hand down. Starting from the beginning of the 70s, the production of the Carlo Moretti took a distance from the historic practice of working glass, confronting itself with a much broader horizon in which the expressive value of form is newly acknowledged. Thus the quest for new shapes, clean and essential, and the research in technical innovation, with an experimental approach both in the use of components to obtain a highly transparent top quality glass and in the contrivance of the most appropriate working tools. 5 The culture of the beautiful and the essential, found in the Moretti glass production, stems from the great curiosity and attention dedicated to what lies beyond the island s limited confines. The sources of inspiration are countless, from the colors of the lagoon to the most highly advanced human inventions. New creations thus come to life, tangible proofs of the magical duality inherent to the substance used, which harbours two contradictory souls, a solid and a liquid one. Cult commodities for the table and the home, vases, chalices and glasses having the power to influence habits and tastes. Created in Murano Crystal glass in limited number, mouth-blown, finished off by hand in the air, then signed one by one and provided with a certificate of authenticity. More and more dedicated to a public of art collectors, these objects have found their collocation in the most important world museums, from Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museo Do Design del Centro Culturale of Bélem in Lisboa, to the MOMA in New York, to the Musée de Arts Décoratifs in Paris and to the Israel Museum of Jerusalem. Carlo Moretti is therefore an artisan factory one of the few left in Murano where creativity and strategic choices coincide in a personal and unmistakable trademark. Year after year, new contemporary classics become part of the permanent collection of some of the most prestigious museums in the world,
