5 About Roslyn Roslyn is an affluent Nassau County suburb in the Town of North Hempstead (TONH). Renowned for its many restored 17 th and 18 th century historic homes; the pre-colonial Harbor Village is located on the tidal mudflats at the head of Hempstead Harbor. Roslyn maintains its small-town look and feel offset by upscale restaurants, boutiques, banks, post office, local businesses, Village government offices and commercial properties. The Roslyn School district is top-rated and is a compelling reason families are drawn to the area in addition to proximity to the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway, Long Island Railroad, Beaches, Golf and Clubs. Roslyn Village Waterfront Development As modes of transportation changed in the 20 th century and the population increased the decline of Roslyn s waterfront left large tracts of underutilized land, spurring a series of development proposals Lumber Road and the Roslyn Landing (condo development) are two waterfront projects poised to move forward. Both developers will create waterfront public promenades that tie into the Waterfront Enhancement Strategy for the Village which focuses on natural resource enhancement, recreation and links to existing neighborhoods and the village center. As part of the plan, Roslyn Village will also construct an estimated 2-acre waterfront public park. The Waterfront Development plan creates a framework for the Village that prioritizes the value of the historic Main Street and public connection to the waterfront (see Map). 5

6 Roslyn Today The Village is currently in a stage of revitalization with several high-profile public and privately funded projects scheduled. In addition to the waterfront strategy outlined above, the 16-acre Gerry Park (right) will undergo an estimated $9,000,000 overhaul. Last October, the Roslyn Landmark Society and the Town of North Hempstead unveiled the restored 100 year-old Mackay Horse Statue in the Park adding a new historic icon to the Village landscape. The Roslyn Landmark Society is now in preliminary planning to restore the Robeson- Williams Grist Mill (circa 1736), an icon of the Roslyn streetscape. The Grist Mill can be seen from Lumber Road; its renovation will add to the visual scope, further enhance the town s historic appeal as a destination spot. A proposed traffic turnaround will allow for better traffic flow (projected completion 3-5 yrs). While many local businesses thrive, increased rents coupled with traffic and parking has forced tenants to vacate the area. Construction on the Roslyn Viaduct is projected to be complete by years end. The vital east-west connection over Hempstead Harbor will provide more efficient traffic flow in and around the Village.
