3 photo: Bjorn Utpott Silverline Hengelostraat Almere Built on the edge of the Weerwater lake, the artificial lake at the heart of this sprawling, polynuclear polder town (translated: again-water - since Almere is built on reclaimed land and after that, a new lake was planned), it contains 58 apartments, just outside Almere s town centre, which, two decades after its construction, is undergoing a major transformation orchestrated by Rem Koolhaas s Office for Metropolitan ure The façade is made with aluminum cladding, like a tight skin -hence the name The meander form reinforces the logo-like singularity of this building while at the same time catering to market practical demands: there are plenty of takers for the top and bottom levels, far fewer for the middle The middle has therefore been reduced to a minimum and the top and foot maximized An equally rigid logic informs the distribution of windows, which is a direct reflection of the rooms they serve Each window is positioned symmetrically in the central axis of a room Project is not public! 4 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Block 16 Koetsierbaan Almere Block 16 is part of the masterplan designed by OMA for a new prestigious city centre in Almere The autonomous expressive block reacts on two conditions: the billowing end marks as a kind of gatekeeper and the building fits in with the right angled grid of the adjacent glass high-rise housing blocks The clock is sited on a basement car park (design OMA) serving as a pedestal The elevated deck level is half occupied by the common entrance and the storerooms The other part is a gym which continued on the parking level below where it ends in the fitness-café, an autonomous pavilion The design of Block 16 is largely based on an analysis of tunnel formwork constructions Implementation of this mode of construction is financially attractive in developing major housing projects Variation in the length of adjacent tunnels breaks the monotonous structure The result is a wavy facade surface providing the block with a dynamic quality (Maarten Willems for René van Zuuk Architekten) Project is not public! 5 photo: Fernando Miguel García Martín Blok 5 Flevostraat 1315 CC Almere Due to economic fluctuations, the components of Blok 5's original programme have been frequently changed, switched or moved In this final scheme, a high rise block is located on the banks of the Weerwater, the lake beside which the new town centre is located This tower consists of a rectilinear planned apartment block placed above a trapezium-shaped base that contains a Grand Café These two contrasting volumes are morphed together to form one continuous building At the other end of the site, a shopping 'warehouse' bridges over a new internal street The main shopping thoroughfare of the Diagonaal links the two While the long stretch of this street is subdivided into individual units, the flowing shop fronts and torqued surfaces of the elevations unite the long façade (text from architect's website) Project is public! 2008 search Almere Hart cv fotosvoladoras 5
6 Side by Side Koetsierbaan 1315 Almere Located on the border between the city centre and the Weerwater this two residential towers take a key position in the urban landscape of Almere center To strengthen this 'sign-character' there is deliberately chosen for a very abstract materialization of the facades in industrial glass Closer, the mosaic of frames shows the wealth of more than 20 different housing types The plinth is a wide range of community facilities, including a wintergarden, a sauna and fitness facilities Side by Side is a development with a close collaboration between client, architect and Blitta For this work a complete prefabricated facade was developed in a separate profile system In addition to this, for the first time glass construction boards were factorymade and processed Because of the non-repetitive nature of the façade, the façade was carried out in various widths Project is public! 7 Bridge Almere Hengelostraat / Koetsierbaan 1324 Almere This bridge knits together its surroundings by connecting two large housing blocks The idea was to create a continuous element bteween the two buildings; The Silverline and Block 16 The bridge spans the waterway that connects Weerwater and a harbour for motorized boats There was a headroom of only 28 metres, therefore, in an effort to revive the martime character of the harbour, the architect used a cable-stayed mast structure to refer to the capricious image of sailing boat masts Observed from the water the bridge appears symmetric, static and neutral However if one adjourns to the direction of the traffic for a more dynamic image emerges because of the transversely leaning masts The bridge provides the large-scale and ambitious city centre the necessary lightness Project is public! 8 Tourmaline Felinilaan VN Almere From a distance, the residential tower presents varied faces: steel sheet and wood, horizontal and vertical accents Views and daylighting are superb The ground plan, with three prismatic shapes interlocking, was the source of the the name of the tower, with its suggestions of gleaming semi-precious tourmaline crystals According to the architect: "Near the Weerwater recreational lake in Almere, at a junction of sight lines, an apartment building stands as an urban accent on the skyline From a distance, seen from the city and its access roads, the building continually reveals an ever-changing appearance Its northeast and northwest facades are steel clad A warm veil of wood, drapes its silver mass, profiled in such a way to capture the rays of the morning and evening flood light The south facades have a strong horizontal character The apartments are optimally orientated to benefit from views and sunlight" Project is not public! 2001 Rudy Uytenhaak Hopman Projectrealisatie archimere 8
