5 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Dirk Verwoerd Tarra Tower Busplein KV Almere A combination of companies in the Real Estate Sector wanted a tower in the centre of Almere that expresses the characteristics of the sector: a combination of introverted solidity and flamboyant communication The majority of the activities demand an enclosed and intimate environment The nine floors are kept empty, maximizing usage being a chief concern of the sector, and are surrounded by a concrete façade with small windows that allow for light and privacy and avoid the need for air conditioning It is an economic solution (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! m² MVRDV Maarten_Scheurwater photo: Dirk Verwoerd 5

6 photo: Bjorn Utpott Silverline Hengelostraat Almere Built on the edge of the Weerwater lake, the artificial lake at the heart of this sprawling, polynuclear polder town (translated: again-water - since Almere is built on reclaimed land and after that, a new lake was planned), it contains 58 apartments, just outside Almere s town centre, which, two decades after its construction, is undergoing a major transformation orchestrated by Rem Koolhaas s Office for Metropolitan ure The façade is made with aluminum cladding, like a tight skin -hence the name The meander form reinforces the logo-like singularity of this building while at the same time catering to market practical demands: there are plenty of takers for the top and bottom levels, far fewer for the middle The middle has therefore been reduced to a minimum and the top and foot maximized An equally rigid logic informs the distribution of windows, which is a direct reflection of the rooms they serve Each window is positioned symmetrically in the central axis of a room Project is not public! m² Contractor Structural engineer Claus en Kaan en Moes Bouwgroep Pieters Bouwtechniek Eurowoningen Bjorn_Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott 6

9 photo: Dan Bagnall De Citadel Bordes 1 NL-1020 Almere The beginning idea of the plan of OMA for the Almere centre, 1994, was based on the superposition of uses, with an emphasis on pedestrians and the buildings This block, which is home to the main commercial centre is paradigmatic regarding its variety of uses, from the car park and the underground infrastructures up to the inhabited green covering Portzamparc's development of the Master Plan guidelines has a few changes and the deck is, after all, not a public space, but a bonus for the residents of the terraced houses and the tower The plan's proposal to recreate the density of a medieval city with regard to population and combination of uses has not quite been materialised In the first images of the project there were cows grazing on the deck and the slab of dwelling floated over the commercial streets It is, however, an example of how the uses of urban centres can be combined in many different ways photo: Luuk Kramer Project is public! m², Urban planner Structural engineer Christian de Portzamparc Boele & van Eesteren Eurowoningen aplust 9

10 photo: Allard van der Hoek photo: Allard van der Hoek House M Ludenbos EL Almere House M is a contemporary response to a changing cultural environment in the which is characterized by a growing demand for monumentality, solidity and enclosure as dominant aesthetic values to be expressed in the architecture of the private house In response to this, we positioned the house as it were a wall between front and back garden, separating the introverted street facade from an extroverted garden facade The kitchen, dining room, living room and office space are located on the ground floor in a continuous space which opens-up towards the sunny back garden On the street side, the house appears rather closed and monolithic Two volumes reach out from this mass in an expressive way, providing the entrance and the garage space, defining the sculptural monumental image of the house as seen from the street, creating an interesting visual dialogue with the neighbouring houses built in neo-classical style photo: Allard van der Hoek Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Contractor Marc Koehler s Brouwer en Kok Goldewijk Marian van Leeuwen Marc_Koehler 10

11 photo: Allard van der Hoek photo: Allard van der Hoek Playroom Ludenbos EL Almere Playroom is a multipurpose garden pavilion used as guest house, artist-studio, carport and storage space The building is incorporated in the landscape by sinking it into the ground, by a huge roof-cantilever and by connecting its only wall in form and color scheme to the natural hedge on the gardens perimeter During the project, we got inspired by materials and details found in the so-called `case study houses in Los Angeles built in the 1950s Due to this construction elements have been used in a non-conventional manner By making the roof extra thick, the space underneath appears extra transparent The zig-zagging columns are also over-dimensioned creating a robust image appropriate in the open, windy landscape of the polder photo: Allard van der Hoek Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Contractor Marc Koehler s Brouwer en Kok Goldewijk Marion van Leeuwen Marc_Koehler 11

12 photo: René van Zuuk photo: Christian Richters Project X De Fantasie HZ Almere Behind the somewhat mysterious name Project X, hides the design of René van Zuuk and his family s residence The villa with a small office space is located right next to the architect s former residence Psyche in Almere s The Fantasy district, an area for experimental housing Because the old house serves as his office since 2004, it occurred that the 2 plots could be consolidated into one garden The garden area is optimized by leaving only the width of a parking space between Project X and its neighbouring house From an urban point of view 3 major considerations were important: the box-shaped appearance of all the Fantasy dwellings, the fixed building line and the pattern of alternating building heights Placing the lower storey half below ground level resulted in House X being lower than the adjacent dwellings, thus fitting in the height sequence The distance to the water is reduced, creating a sense of living along the waterfront despite the rather modest size of the canal photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! m² René van Zuuk Architekten Rene van Zuuk en Marjo Korner Rene_van_Zuuk 12

13 photo: Jan Bitter photo: Jan Bitter The Angle Citadel Almere The Angle, Almere the is a four storey mixed use housing and retail project containing 54 dwellings and 3900 m2 of retail space completed in 2007 In 1996, Office of Metropolitan s (OMA) began developing a masterplan for Almere that would provide 1000 new housing units and a host of other cultural facilities such as shops, a museum, library and theatre S333 worked alongside internationally renowned architects including Rem Koolhaas, Kazuyo Sejima, Gigon and Geyer, MVRDV, UN Studio, SeArch, Christian Portzamparc, William Alsop and David Chipperfield The Angle (block 7 + 9) is the final project in OMA s masterplan to complete and it signifies the completed construction of Almere s brand new city centre that is expected to reach up to 250,000 inhabitants by 2010 photo: Jan Bitter Project is not public! 2007 Technical engineer S333 Pieters Bouwtechniek Almere Hart CV: Bouwfonds MAB, Euro Woningen S

14 photo: Iwan Baan photo: Iwan Baan Villa Overgooi Echobos EG Almere Villa Overgooi is a special residential building At first glance, it looks like a single villa but there are actually five! It was commissioned by 5 private clients who had 5 homes designed on this plot of land measuring 5,000m2, with the caveat that they should look like a single villa This led to a series of spatial transformations that merged 5 unique homes into a single compact building The design also made the best possible use of the surrounding natural landscape Each floor was rotated 90 degrees from the floor above/below it, giving the houses two different orientations The first floor runs from east to west, connecting the view between the street and the garden The second floor runs from north to south, optimizing the views out and the amount of sun the houses receive Each building was then elevated to give the second floor of each home a view out over the Gooimeer lake dike Villa Overgooi was nominated for the Dutch AM NAi in 2018 and the Golden Pyramid awards in 2008 photo: Iwan Baan Project is not public! m² NEXT architects Villa van Vijven next-architects 14

15 photo: Pieter Kers photo: Pieter Kers Almeerse Hockey Club Tuinkruidenpad JW Almere The Almeerse Hockey Club is one of the fastest growing sports clubs in the new town of Almere Ten years after realizing its first pavilion (now demolished), this building has been realized with a clear vision on future development The club competes with older 'classical' hockey clubs in the Gooi region The building is designed to be extended in the future and incorporate a stand when the club reaches first division Now it is a transparent building, well protected by a steel clad base The pavilion has three floor levels in before coming to the first floor thus keeping the spectators in contact with the fields and each other All used materials are free of maintenance so volunteers can concentrate on sports photo: Pieter Kers Project is not public! m², Interior architect Borren Staalenhoef en yep Almeerse Hockey Club 15

16 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Fernando Miguel García Martín Blok 5 Flevostraat 1315 CC Almere Due to economic fluctuations, the components of Blok 5's original programme have been frequently changed, switched or moved In this final scheme, a high rise block is located on the banks of the Weerwater, the lake beside which the new town centre is located This tower consists of a rectilinear planned apartment block placed above a trapezium-shaped base that contains a Grand Café These two contrasting volumes are morphed together to form one continuous building At the other end of the site, a shopping 'warehouse' bridges over a new internal street The main shopping thoroughfare of the Diagonaal links the two While the long stretch of this street is subdivided into individual units, the flowing shop fronts and torqued surfaces of the elevations unite the long façade (text from architect's website) Project is public! 2008 search Almere Hart cv fotosvoladoras photo: Dirk Verwoerd 16

17 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Irene van Hooff Villa Kroos Ludenbos EL Almere This villa is located in a new district called Almere Overgooi, characterized by large parcels and luxury villas, showing a rich mixture of architecture styles Contrary to common building rules in the, the municipality of Almere decided to not prescribe a particular architecture for this district's development plan It's astounding however that with so much freedom, a majority chooses for catalogue housing But not for this project! The clients were determined to build their modern dream-house on a plot of no less than 3000 sqm The concept is based on a zigzag plan turned 15 deg on its location, which arises from the orientation of the sun, direction of the wind and views from inside and when arriving at the villa The volume is split up in a higher block at the north and lower block at the south The living area for cooking, dining and relaxing forms the heart of the villa in one large open space, which stands in direct contact with the rest of the house and garden photo: Mieke Vullings Project is not public! m² Contractor Project manager Mieke Vullings Bouw2000 Vidazz private Mieke 17

23 photo: Martino Zegwaard photo: Martino Zegwaard Public Library Almere Stadhuisplein XC Almere The wedge-shaped of Almere s new public library site occupies a prominent position next to the town hall, with its apex on Town Hall Square The block accommodates several different functions The Diagonaal frontage is lined by retail spaces, on Wandellaan there are 30 apartments, while the southwest corner contains a strategic reserve of over 2000 m² for the library The principal element of the block is the public library Although the welcoming main entrance lies on the square, the library is emphatically present on all sides of the block The library is succession of spaces which together form a route some 400 metres in length An escalator near the entrance carries visitors up to the first of a series of ascending terrace floors which bring them to the second floor On the second floor the route continues via an escalator to the study centre on the fourth floor or to the auditorium photo: Martino Zegwaard Project is public! m² MVSA s City of Almere Martino 23

24 photo: Martino photo: Martino Apollo Hotel Almere Koetsierbaan SE Almere The Urban Entertainment Centre in Almere comprises of 16,000sqm of new buildings containing shopping, pop concert hall, disco, hotel, bicycle park and associated leisure, cafe and restaurant facilities These elements are grouped together beside a new sunken square and form an edge to the southern limit of the existing town centre The hotel is a 120 room 4-star hotel clad in cedar boarding The hotel has a raised sleeping block approximately 4,000sqm, that is lifted eight metres above street level Below the ground plain is the car park with a direct connection to the lobby photo: Martino Project is public! m², Urban planner Will Alsop Martino 24
