History Tonkin House was built in 1830 by John Tonkin, a prosperous Methodist businessman from St. Ives who started the brickworks in Wedmore. He built the large emporium next door in addition to this dwelling house using "Tonkin" bricks and "Vish-tail" tiles especially designed and made in his brickworks.

7 Description Tonkin House is in the heart of the village with easy access to all the amenities. It dates from the late Georgian period and retains many original details including ornate cornices and ceiling roses, working window shutters, marble and cast iron Vireplaces, and a particularly Vine staircase and balustrade above the galleried dining hall. These features are complemented by works in recent years which have included re-wiring, replumbing and the installation of oak Vlooring in various rooms plus a new kitchen and bathrooms. Whilst the house retains its charm and character it is nonetheless an extremely comfortable and liveable family home with gas central heating with period style radiators. The front door opens into a wide reception hall with doors to the drawing room and sitting room. Both of these Vine rooms have large bay windows (with shutters) and each has a marble Vireplace. The reception hall continues through into a large dining room which has a magnivicent Vlying staircase and gallery with an ornate balustrade. Next to the dining room is the 23'5'' kitchen & breakfast room being light and airy benevitting from a dual aspect and French doors to the garden.
