2 EMERGENCY PREPARATION INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS OF PBCA Please note that a more details are located on our website Most geographic areas are prone to some form of naturally occurring severe weather conditions. for the coastal areas of Florida, our greatest natural threat is the tropical storm. This compilation of emergency preparedness information is geared toward preparing for this type of storm. Evacuation orders are given by the local and/or county municipal emergency management agencies for specific areas depending on the strength and landfall projection of a threatening storm. They are either voluntary or mandatory. Failure to obey a mandatory evacuation order is a violation of the law. IN GENERAL Know your insurance policies. Create a plan for yourself and your family in the event of a major storm requiring evacuation. Pick a friend or relative outside of the area that family members can call if separated. Advise your friends or neighbors of your evacuation plans. For information on making emergency arrangements for your pets, you may wish to call the SPCA at If you evacuate your pets to a pet shelter, take plenty of pet food and other provisions with you. Make a list of items to be gathered together in the event of an evacuation including personal hygiene items, prescription medicines and important papers and valuables: social security cards birth certificates drivers license marriage and death records wills insurance policies deeds stocks, bonds passports immunization records important phone numbers jewelry and small valvables an inventory of your personal belongings Residents who leave their homes unattended during the hurricane season (June 1 st through November 30 th ) should prepare their Units before leaving. Remove all items from your balcony/patio areas. Appliances should be disconnected from their electric source, circuit breakers (other than that controlling the air conditioning system or dehumidifier) shut off, and the water valve located over your hot water heater closed off. Each resident should compile an inventory list of furnishings, personal property, etc. contained in their home, copy of which should go to their homeowners insurance policy agent. A videotaped inventory is ideal. When a hurricane watch is announced, it means hurricane conditions are a real possibility and may threaten a region within 36 hours. Getting ready: Fill your car s gas tank and check oil, coolant, and tire pressure levels. Check that you have a working flashlight and radio with extra batteries. Listen for weather updates. Buy or bottle drinking water. ( Continued )

5 ( Continued from page 2 ) Refill prescriptions and check that you have an adequate supply of over- the- counter medications (aspirins, antiseptic, etc.). Get cash and/or traveler s checks from the bank. You must be ready to leave immediately if a mandatory evacuation order is issued, even if the weather does not appear threatening at the time. If a warning is issued for a major category 5 storm, such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992, early evacuation is essential for anyone intending to leave the vulnerable regions of Pinellas County. PREPARATION STEPS DURING A HURRICANE WATCH In case a hurricane watch is issued for our area, residents should minimally: Remove all plants, furniture, and other items from your balcony/patio areas and place them inside your home or in your home s storage area. Do not think that you can adequately secure your patio furniture by tying them to the balcony railings or using bungee cords on them! Check your preparation lists. Any items missing from the lists should be procured as quickly as possible. It is always best to keep an inventory of those items you may need in an emergency situation, as stores become extremely crowded and sell out of essentials abruptly when a serious storm watch is imminent. Suggested items to include on preparation lists are provided in this information packet. Refill prescriptions. Get some extra cash (if phone lines are down, you will not be able to use your credit cards). Have prior arrangements made for family members with special medical needs or who require oxygen or respirators. If you do have special needs, register now with the Pinellas County Emergency Management Office, or the City of St. Pete. FL Emergency Management Coordinator. PREPARATION STEPS DURING A HURRICANE WARNING/EVACUATION Steps we suggest residents take in the event of a hurricane warning and evacuation order are as follows: Relocate furnishings away from windows and sliding glass doors. If you installed shutters on your sliding glass doors, close them. There is no need to use tape on your laminated glass windows. Have your emergency supplies ready, as well as all your important documents. Proof of ownership/residency of your home and identification are essential. If you are ordered to evacuate, emergency services may not readmit you to the area unless you can prove you belong there. Shut off all circuit breakers prior to leaving, and close off the master water valve to your Home. Close all windows and doors securely and lock them. Remember that during storm conditions, there will probably be no electricity. Listen to the news for last minute changes in emergency shelter operations and traffic advisories. Follow instructions of local emergency management officials. Have protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Take your emergency evacuation kit and emergency car kit.
