1 UPPER NORTH REGION NEWSLETTER MARCH 2016 WANT MORE INFORMATION ON U3A? Upper North is holding an information stand at St Ives Village Shopping Centre on 14 March. 166 Mona Vale Road, St Ives. Visit the friendly team at the information table (located on Level 1 between Maggie T and St Ives Jewellers) to learn what courses are available in the area. Whatever your interest, there s a course for you. SHOWCASE SUCCESS It was standing room only at Upper North s recent Showcase and Welcome to New Members held at the Turramurra Uniting Church. Around 90 people attended to hear speakers from various disciplines talk about their courses in After the talks, the audience mingled with Upper North committee members and group leaders and enjoyed refreshments. We are happy to announce we signed up over a dozen new members. The audience heard from Punchi Dassanayake who outlined the lectures planned for this term s Science and Technology course at St Ives. Margot Taverne gave us an insight into philosophy and read a couple of poems she has written about the joys of U3A membership. Phil Pryor outlined what history courses are on offer this semester and gave a very informative and amusing account of the importance of history
2 in the modern world. Shirley Beck and Michael Hummel spoke about their respective language courses and gave an insight into how learning a new language can improve mental capacity in seniors. Rock and Roll with Howard Among the lecturers was Howard Ferrer who gave an entertaining preview of his course The History of Rock and Roll (pictured wearing his John Lennon T-shirt). Apparently, Howard has a different rock t-shirt for every lecture. A big thank you goes out to all the committee members, course leaders and helpers who made the event such a success.
