14 14 AFL Architects Peter Mokaba Stadium, World Cup South Africa AFL designed this bespoke Stadium and associated support facilities as one of the host venues for the Football World Cup in The form of the largely concrete structure is inspired by the locally iconic Baobab tree, with the steel structure supporting the roof plane gathered together at each corner of the Stadium. The site has been arranged to offer convenient access, parking and circulation for supporters attending both Football and Rugby fixtures as well as for Groups gathering for concerts and rallies.

18 18 AFL Architects Football Club Gabala Stadium and Training Facility - Azerbaijan From the project s inception, the aspiration of both the Club and AFL has been to create a truly world-class football destination and training venue, which also reflects the unique character and culture of the Gabala Region. Accommodation within the stadium includes hotel and conferencing facilities, as well as retail and corporate hospitality space, and a dramatic viewing deck at the top of the entrance tower. The 9000 m2 training facility incorporates both First and Youth Team facilities, with separate rest, recreation and training suites, and a shared gym, swimming pool and indoor sports hall, in addition to eight external practice pitches.

19 AFL Architects 19 Everton Football Club Academy & Finch Farm Training Ground The design philosophy for the training ground was to develop a state of the art facility based on several principles. The new pavilion and any hard landscaping was located in a similar position to that of the existing farm buildings and associated hardstandings. Any other buildings were limited to that of a groundsmens store enclosure and security lodge. The perceived building heights were kept as low as possible by emphasising a horizontal aesthetic and avoiding steep pitched roofs.

20 20 AFL Architects Chelsea Football Club - Training Facility Cobham AFL Architects have developed the concept of a building in harmony with its setting: meeting the demands of a challenging brief whilst integratinwg the landscape of this sensitive site. The green roof makes reference to the existing ground plane, raised to create volumes below which are enclosed by glazed facades. The facades are then shielded where required, against solar gain by solid shards formed using metal panels designed to naturally weather over time, and variably aligned to add texture.

22 22 AFL Architects FC Kuban Stadium - Krasnodar, Russia AFL secured the design of the new 45,000 capacity stadium for FC Kuban via competition. The state of the art stadium is designed to UEFA, FIFA and Russian Football Federation standards, and also for the hosting of concerts and other events or sports.

24 24 AFL Architects Salford City Stadium The home of Salford Reds Rugby Football Club and Sale Sharks Rugby Union Football Club. The stadium has been designed in three phases, providing an initial capacity of 12,000 and allowing expansion to 15,000 and 20,000 by providing upper tiers. The initial phase of 12,000 includes a Paviliion Stand accommodating the community, club functions and conference and banqueting for 750 people.

25 AFL Architects 25 Baghdad Olympic Stadium The stadium has been designed to host the Olympic Games and also provide a destination venue for a variety of national and international events. The design requirements ensure the design and construction quality meets the Olympic, Paralympic Games and FIFA specifications while providing value for money, maximizing efficiencies and highlighting health and safety throughout.

26 26 AFL Architects Rio 2016 Olympic Park - Brazil AFL Architects in collaboration with BDP have designed this submission for the Olympic Park master plan competition for one of Rio de Janeiro s main sites for the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games. The use of layered access routes and a central pedestrian Park create a car free environment for the public while allowing excellent vehicle and accredited access to the back of house areas. The whole site has been designed with legacy use as a thriving residential, business and sports district central to the whole scheme making maximum use of the extensive lakeside water front.

27 AFL Architects 27 Edgbaston Cricket Ground Warwickshire The redevelopment at Edgbaston International Cricket Ground involved the demolition of 4 existing stands to create space for the new facility which comprises 8195 spectator seats, player, media & visitor facilities, museum, club shop, offices, conference & banquet suite and exhibition hall for 1800 person which formed the base of a large concourse designed to double up as an exhibition hall linked to the large banqueting facilities on the floor above.

28 28 AFL Architects New Mental Health Complex Leigh Infirmary Working together with 5 Borough Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, following our successful Design Competition win. We were challenged to provide a landmark Mental Health building that will be a world leader in providing world class Mental Health, learning disability & community services, with a reputation for quality, innovation and excellence. The Clients aim is to provide a 40 bed low secure unit (LSU), a low bed PICU facility, as well as accommodation for all the community teams and support service, this would include a flexible community social space to help the service users care pathway throughout their recovery. 30 30 AFL Architects Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool The new 17M state-of-the-art, purpose built facility will offer cancer patients living north of the River Mersey improved access to treatment. The centre will be staffed and operated by Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology s own specialist radiographers and doctors delivering radiotherapy treatments as well as expert cancer rehabilitation and support services.

31 AFL Architects 31 Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Private Patients Unit This private patients unit was delivered as a joint venture between the Trust and Dublin based Healthcare patients The Mater. Exceptionally high quality finishes and furniture help to improve the patients experience.

32 32 AFL Architects The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Patient Treatment Centre At the gateway to this well established site, this striking addition to the estate reflects both the aspirations of the client to produce an iconic building and the highly functional content requested. This centralisation of The Christie Chemotherapy services for both public and private patients incorporates a Clinical Trials Unit which will lead the UK in the trialling of new cancer treatments. Designed to BREEAM excellent.

34 34 AFL Architects Womens Hospital, Concept New Women s Hospital this concept design for a new birth unit and maternity services was designed as a flagship new development on the hospital site.

35 AFL Architects 35 Arrowe Park Hospital Main Entrance The Wirral AFL has completed work re-developing the main entrance at Arrowe Park Hospital for Wirral University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. A complete refurbishment and redevelopment with improved wayfinding and facilities has dramatically improved the patient, visitor and staff experience.

36 36 AFL Architects Stratford Hospital This new hospital facility is designed to act as a catalyst to help the Trust deliver its vision for the future of healthcare provision in Stratford-upon- Avon with strong vernacular influences delivered with a contemporary interpretation, the design helps to give the intended visual statement for such a flagship new development.

37 AFL Architects 37 Integrated Resource Centre Frodsham Integrated Resource Centre situated in the heart of Frodsham. New primary healthcare facility, the formation of a new public square and the enhancement of the adjacent public realm. A new covered street has been included both to satisfy the linkages with the existing leisure centre, which is to be refurbished, and to improve connectivity across the site when approaching from both the North and South.

38 38 AFL Architects Adamson House Head Office For Morsons International Salford Sited on a prominent site between Centenary Way and the Manchester Ship Canal, the client required a bold and high quality design with a strong identity which was both efficient and cost-effective. The building provides circa 55,000 sq ft of flexible office space over four general levels above basement parking. A micro gym and single residential unit have also been incorporated into the design. The massing of the building has been carefully considered to have the desired presence on Centenary Way, whilst allowing ample room for parking, landscaping and future development on adjacent sites.

40 40 AFL Architects HQ - Offices Boutique Hotel & Apartments Chester AFL s role was to develop an existing concept, creating significant added value, whilst working with the client and contractor to deliver through to completion this sensitive scheme. This is a key development inside the historic City Wall of Chester. It is a prestigious site in a key location adjacent to the Castle, Chester Racecourse, City Gate (Chester has 4 city gates) and the River Dean.

41 AFL Architects 41 Building 12 Princes Dock Liverpool Princes Dock Development Company required a quality building to continue their ongoing strategy redeveloping the waterfront at Princes Dock. AFL were commissioned following a design competition to produce a striking piece of architecture within demanding budget and timescale constraints. This speculative development has been delivered to the satisfaction of the Client. The building has many admirers and blue chip tenants. The building comprises of 5 stories of office space with a central atrium and a restaurant unit at ground floor.

42 42 AFL Architects Prince s Half Tide Dock Liverpool Situated within a conservation area on the historic Prince s Half Tide Dock, this scheme was developed in close consultation with the local planning authority, as it was important to compliment and relate to the existing Waterloo Warehouse. The block features a strongly expressed cornice line which sits below the level of the existing cornice of the adjacent Waterloo Warehouse. In addition, the scale of the articulation of the façade at ground/first floor level mirrors that of the Waterloo Warehouse plinth. The proposal also endeavours to minimise impact upon the setting of the wall by preserving views through the turreted gateway, to the water and river beyond.

44 44 AFL Architects City Lofts Phase1, Princes Dock Liverpool This important site at the entrance to the Princes Dock redevelopment required a residential structure of significant height. The design addressed this sensitive issue by adopting an appropriate but asymmetrical massing, allowing the creation of a higher 20 storey element adjacent to the site entrance, twinned with a lower 10 storey block further along the eastern edge of the dock via a seven storey link. The development offers a consistent language to all elevations. With clear expression of the structural grid via the confident use of concrete panels, they frame generously proportioned glazed bays offering panoramic views of the surrounding areas from within the apartments.

45 AFL Architects 45 Shanghai Tower Concept The shanghi tower is a competition entry for a mixed-use to storey 1,000,000 sq ft tower. Incorporating office, hotel and residential uses, the tower stands on an island in the centre of Half Tide Dock, on Liverpool s historic waterfront. Taking inspiration from the rich cultural and historical context of Liverpool, it s docks, and it s strong fading links with Shanghai, we generated a unique and dramatic design which would form a 21st century landmark for Liverpool s waterfront.

46 46 AFL Architects Alexandra Tower Princes Dock Liverpool This site provided an opportunity to create a landmark building marking the entrance to Princes Dock from the River Mersey and forming a visual link to the dock redevelopment area from Liverpool City Centre and Wirral Peninsular. The building responds to this opportunity with its significant height, dynamic design and contemporary use of materials. The tower is a cluster of vertical elements. Vertical glass shafts extend at each end of the building contrasting with a singular massing element in the centre. The east and west elevations are wrapped by two continuously glazed full facades offering extraordinary views over the river and city.

48 48 AFL Architects Ashgate & Crossacres Schools Manchester City Council The project involves the refurbishment of an existing school building, together with some new build accommodation to facilitate the co-location of Crossacres Primary School and Ashgate SEN school. The new build facility provides a new entrance and shared foundation unit to link the two schools whilst creating a new civic presence and public entrance zone.

50 50 AFL Architects Allerton Building Salford University The aim of the design was to dramatically improve the internal space of the entrance and ground floor. There was a need not only to maintain the existing entrance, but to introduce another entrance that receives pedestrian traffic from the new faculty building. The once dark and un-inviting space will be transformed into a bright, airy and welcoming area that will provide a focal point for all students and visitors. Using natural and robust materials with clean uncomplicated lines.

51 AFL Architects 51 Liverpool Football Club Boot Room Ellesmere Port Further to AFL s successful involvement in a Boot Room themed restaurant at Anfield stadium in 2010, the Practice were invited to design and project manage a second venue in Cheshire Oaks. Working within an existing unit, the design had to both follow the concept of the original restaurant, further strengthening the brand, and the landlord s requirements and restrictions. Opening in December 2011, the restaurant has proved successful, providing a high class dining environment, besides subtle branding towards football and the club.

52 52 AFL Architects National Football Museum Manchester AFL was appointed as technical design advisor and lead consultant for the design team of the base build package for the National Football Museum Relocation. The existing museum was relocated from its current home at Preston North End Football Club into the existing Urbis building in Manchester city centre. The works involved the installation of new staircases and escalators to facilitate a new circulation strategy, together with the creation of new gallery spaces to facilitate the environmental requirements by the exhibits.

54 54 AFL Architects Under The Bridge Chelsea Football Club Stamford Bridge Stadium A truly unique music and entertainment venue, offering an unforgettable experience and paying homage to the influence of British popular music over the last 50 years. Working in close conjunction with US Architect Jim Cafarelli, the designer of the famous House Of Blues chain, the concept was to create an industrial feel reminiscent of old bridge undercrofts and old warehouses, evoking the type of raw spaces in which many of the UK s greatest bands performed in their earliest days. Designed and built with the highest attention to detail, and featuring state of the art architectural, audio-visual and lighting specifications, this intimate London venue was competed Christmas 2010.
