Archbishp Tutu, wh received the Nble Peace Prize in 1984, was chsen by President Nelsn Mandela in 1995 t chair Suth Africa's Truth and Recnciliatin Cmmissin. He als serves as chancellr f the University f the Western Cape. In his UMSL address, entitled "Frgiveness is the Way Frward," Archbishp Tutu spke f the prcess f recnciliatin in Suth Africa after the end f Apartheid and challenged the audience t recgnize and cnfrnt unreslved issues f race in America. Tutu spke befre a full huse in the J.C. Penney Cnference Center auditrium and was given a standing vatin at the cnclusin f his speech. Previus recipiencts f the Glbal Citizen Award include Nbel Peace Prize winners Jhn Hume and Lech Walesa. Excerpts frm Archbishp Tutu's remarks: "[Retributin and reprisal] is ne way f dealing with a wrng inflicted n ne r ne's cmmunity. It is t set ff an inexrable spiral f revenge and retributin. This way f dealing with wrng leads t disaster. It leads t a devastating cul-de-sac. "Others have thught that the best way f dealing with having been wrnged by anther is by trying t ignre it, by claiming that bygnes wuld be bygnes. Frget the past, they say. Try t live fr the present and the future. Sadly, this way ut is nt an effective way f dealing with an ffense, with a wrng, by merely papering ver the cracks. It des nt wrk. This secnd way f

2 trying t ignre what has happened in the past is as unviable as the first way, fr it des nt bring peace and stability anything but. "And s in Suth Africa, we tried a third way, lking the beast in the eye. Many have thught that when a black-led gvernment was in pwer, as sn as that happened, Suth Africa wuld experience the bld-letting f an rgy f retributin and revenge by blacks seeking t get their wn back after centuries f injustice, ppressin and explitatin. "Instead the wrld was awed as it watched the quite extrardinary prcess f the Truth and Recnciliatin Cmmissin, where peple culd get amnesty, even fr the mst gruesme atrcities, in exchange fr the truth. We chse the hard way f cnfessin, frgiveness, and recnciliatin. "We were very frtunate. The wrld supprted us, the wrld prayed fr us, the wrld cared fr us, ver a very lng perid f time. Our victry ver Apartheid wuld never have happened had it nt been fr the supprt that we did get frm the internatinal cmmunity, frm yurselves, frm students and thers wh were part f the anti-apartheid mvement. "We asked fr yur help, yu gave us yur help, and lk at us tday. With yur help we are free, we are demcratic, we are trying t be nnracial, we are trying t be nnsexist..." Bard f Curatrs President Stephensn Presents Reslutin Hnring UWC's 40th Anniversary At the Glbal Citizen Award ceremny, UM Bard f Curatrs President Hugh E. Stephensn, Jr., acting n behalf f the Bard f Curatrs, presented t UWC Rectr Cecil Abrahams a reslutin cngratulating UWC n the 40th Anniversary f its funding. The reslutin reads, in part: Whereas, the Bard f Curatrs apprved a precedent-setting academic linkage between the University f Missuri System and the University f the Western Cape in 1986; and Whereas, this histric link has been recgnized as a mdel internatinal academic exchange prgram; and Whereas, the University f the Western Cape has played a unique leadership rle in Suth Africa's transfrmatin, and Whereas, the University f the Western Cape is celebrating the 40th anniversary f its funding: Nw, therefre, be it reslved that the Bard f Curatrs, n behalf f the students, faculty, staff and alumni f the University f Missuri System, des hereby cngratulate the University f the Western Cape n its 40th anniversary and recgnize its significant and nging cntributins t the future f Suth Africa. 3 "We are prud that [in 1986 the University f the Western Cape] signed an agreement with the United States and with this university in particular. This was the first such agreement. It was at a time when sanctins had been applied, particularly by the liberatin mvement, but this agreement was accepted because the University f Missuri was very serius abut the cntributin they wanted t make t the educatin f thse wh had been ppressed fr s lng. The University f Missuri has truly std by us and been a member f ur family fr the last 15 years. "What the University f Missuri did by cming with us, and jurneying with us, thrugh the Apartheid days, t the pint where transfrmatin has taken place, and where nw we can rebuild a cuntry that was shattered by a vicius past: the University f Missuri has in fact shwn that it is curageus, it is prepared t jin us. We are indeed very prud t have this cnnectin. "We have grwn int a large cmprehensive university nw ffering degrees in seven faculties up t the Ph.D. level. The University f Missuri, in sending ver 150 prfessrs and increasingly mre students t spend sme time n ur campus...has indeed helped us t shape and t establish ur academic prgram and indeed t get t a level where we are a university nt nly recgnized within ur wn cuntry as f imprtance, but a university that is recgnized internatinally fr the rle it played in transfrming Suth Africa and the further rle it is ging t play in advancing Suth Africa t be the kind f demcracy where all her peple can truly have a better life..." Academic Sympsium Cmmemrates UWC's 40th Anniversary Als n May 18, the UM Suth African Educatin Prgram Cmmittee hsted an academic sympsium t celebrate UWC's 40th anniversary and the 15th year f the UM-UWC linkage. In the sympsium, Dr. Harld Herman, prfessr f Educatin at UWC spke n "Glbalism and Internatinalizatin f Educatin: The Western Cape-University f Missuri Experience ver the Past Fifteen Years," and Dr. Geta LeSeur, assciate prfessr f English and Wmen Studies at UM-Clumbia, described her experiences as a faculty exchange participant in Suth Africa in a presentatin entitled, "What is a Wman Like Yu Ding in a Place Like This? Lessns Learned frm the UM/UWC Encunter." Fllwing thse presentatins, a panel cmpsed f Dr. Herman and ne faculty member frm each UM campus discussed the tpic, "Fifteen Years f Faculty Exchanges between the University f Missuri and the University f the Western Cape." UM panel participants included Dr. Nick Perff, assciate prfessr f Business & Public Administratin, UMKC; Dr. Jenice Prather-Kinsey, assciate prfessr f Accuntancy, UMC; Dr. Richard Hagni, Curatrs' Prfessr f Gelgy & Gephysics, UMR; and Dr. Gerge McCall, prfessr f Scilgy & Public Plicy Administratin, UMSL. Prf. Herman participated in the UM-UWC faculty exchange in 1990 and is again participating in He is als UWC team leader fr a prject n "Schl culture and rganizatinal change" under the TELP linkage grant. Prf. LeSeur participated in the faculty exchange in 1993 and 1997.

Perff was a faculty exchange participant in 1991 and 1994 and currently serves as UM team leader fr a TELP prject n "Achieving excellence in academic and institutinal utcmes thrugh cllabratin, replicatin, and disseminatin f best practices in Ecnmic and Management Sciences." Prf. Prather-Kinsey cnducted research in Suth Africa in 1999 with funding frm the UMSAEP Suth African Partnerships Prgram. Prf. Hagni was a faculty exchange participant in 1992 and Prf. McCall participated in the faculty exchange in 1991 and 1999, received a Partnerships Prgram award in 1997, and leads a TELP prject team in a cllabrative prject n "Cnflict, vilence, and health: Health and wellness curriculum and staff develpment." Prfessr Cecil Abrahams, rectr and vice chancellr f UWC, President Manuel Pachec f the UM, and UM Curatr Paul Steele attended the sympsium. In remarks made at a special meeting f the UMSAEP Cmmittee n May 19, Rectr Abrahams nted that the UM academic sympsium was the nly celebratin f UWC's 40th anniversary utside f Suth Africa.
