To accomplish our missions, we must work together. Human beings are now at a critical juncture of history. Over-depletion of natural resources, degradation of natural environment, loss of bio-diversity, global warming, weakening of cultural heritage and identity, degradation of urban environment, social disparity and poverty, lack of opportunities for young people, etc., are all imminent problems in front of us now due to the unsustainable mode of development in the past century. Fortunately, there is a growing awareness among HK people that changes are necessary. We must look for new and sustainable development strategies. As urban development and building construction consume a high percentage of the natural resources and energy used globally, we can only succeed with the active participation of architects. Fully aware of the problems, HKIA members have been taking leading roles in past years in the areas of green building, sustainable urban design, heritage conservation, preservation of natural habitat and bio-diversity, societal and environmental aspects of city development, etc. Our efforts and achievements are well recognized by the public. To create a sustainable and livable city, we cannot over-look any of these aspects. Fortunately, architect is trained with the skill in integration of the various facets of architectural and urban design seamlessly into a blue print for the future. Yet, it is not an easy task, and we architects must continue to work hard together. Practicing architects in the private sector and Government departments, academic in universities, and HKIA members performing other roles in the society must join force towards this ultimate goal. We need to educate the public the importance of our work, and promote the image of our profession and architectural excellence. With our joint efforts, we can contribute in the building of a sustainable and livable city that is full of opportunities for our young people.

As a collective force of architectural professionals, we are making a significant impact to our people, the city and the environment. When we are united together for a Vision and a Mission, the Power of this force cannot be under estimated. Personally, I have witnessed the changes of the Institute in these years, as always, for the betterment and well-being of the members and our society. The Institute has been in the past years, breaking new grounds, making an un-biased stand and voice in society, arousing awareness and understanding of the community to Architecture, Living Environment, and our City. These works have been of prime importance and should be continued. The council also needs a composition of members from different sectors. This balance of voices and a together genuine commitment to work together collectively as a contribution to our members and our society is of immense importance. As a small practice Architect, with interest in Architecture as Culture and connection of our Practice to the Community, I wish my joining into the council can extend a wider representation of our members and can be an added value to our Institute. 6 Candidate s Personal Statement: It is my observation and concern that with the progress of Hong Kong, the architect s role in Hong Kong has become increasing complex and demanding while the significance of the architect s contribution to the society is often under-recognized as compared to other professionals. I hope that through involvement in HKIA as a council member, I shall be able to contribute towards greater recognition of the architect s contribution to Hong Kong. While the members of HKIA are significantly less as compared to other building professionals such as engineers and surveyors, the architect s contribution to the building industry as well as the society of Hong Kong is extremely important as architects often take the role as the team leader of building projects. Our design and our tremendous effort in details and construction administration, supervision help to create the space and environment which affects people s life and well-being every day. I hope to participate in HKIA s council s work which will allow me to connect to and jointly work with other fellow HKIA members to work towards this goal. I also hope to engage wider member participation for the promotion of the architect s work and contribution to the building industry as well as to the society of Hong Kong through exhibition, publication, public education, community engagement, collaboration and dialogue with other institutes, organizations as well as government bodies.

It have been continuously a meaningful journey to exchange ideas and to raise the minds, including foreign and PRC collaborators, through Architecture. Our Institute is also active in not only enhancing design and construction by individuals but also policies-marking process in Governments regarding professional practices. We ve been bringing positive influence to architectural practices and quality of built environment not only in HK but also outside HK including Mainland China. It s my mission to work with Members and Our Institute to
