2 Course Objective and Main Contents Architecture is a prime visual element in shaping our urban fabric. It is essentially an important domain for every citizen to have a basic knowledge of it, and to learn about how the city is transformed and developed, to a micro-scale of appreciating architecture through the understanding of forms and functions down to each articulation. This course provides a general outline to architecture. The aim is to introduce architecture as a cultural phenomenon. The course will increase the student s awareness of the built environment as it exists all around. It examines a variety of spatial experiences encountered in exemplary places and buildings. The lessons are based upon a sandwich module i.e. alternate class lectures and visits to areas of designated interest, with emphasis on a range of topics, including the historical, symbolic aesthetic, functional, cultural and green aspects of architecture. It is specially designed with guided experience for students which are offered opportunities for real life interaction with architecture of local context, and to have direct dialogue with the designers who have created it. The students are encouraged to exchange views with relevant expertise in the field, hence to inspire ideas for their compilation of a report as a course assignment. This wide intellectual horizon is ideal for fulfilling some of the objectives of the University s General Education curriculum. For the sake of stimulating students interest, a quiz would be conducted based on a slide show of renowned architecture, as to assess students understanding upon the subject. In parallel, students are also taught to hand-sketching selected works, by which they would be able to comprehend the building geometry, compositions and basic artistic techniques. Course Syllabus The course introduces a number of topics related to the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of architecture. Among the topics introduced would be: (1) Introduction to Architectural Vocabulary (2) Appreciation of Hong Kong Architecture (3) Architectural styles through the Ages (4) Architecture and Culture (5) Architecture and Heritage (6) Sustainable Architecture (7) Architecture and Planning (8) Design Process and Architectural Practice (9) China New Architecture

3 To keep abreast of current affairs, this course is designed to have some content variations in order to address latest issues, guest speakers will be invited to speak on the subject or students be arranged for on-site experience and group discussions. Assignment and Assessment There will be 3 assignments for this module. 1. A Short Test to be injected during the first half of the program. 2. A Term Report - students are required to apply what they have learned, especially from site visits and interaction with expertise, and to have it complied into a report on the study of a subject chosen from the given list. This will be presented in the form of site photos or hand sketches and of not less than 2000 words in English. At least 10 A4 pages in electronic format shall be submitted. 3. A Group Presentation & Group Discussions presentation and discussion in groups shall be conducted in the tutorials and is an experience sharing exercise amongst the classmates. Each group shall be formed with 3-5 students to present on specific subject. Assessment shall be based upon group collaboration, time management and individual presentation skill, the latter refers to graphical and oral presentation. The short test (10%), the term-report (40%), two discussion sessions (5%+5%) and the group presentation (40%) shall be accountable for 100% of the final marks, while absence will have marks deducted, based on 1 point for each lesson.
