Bographcal Sketch: Henry Norman Bethune ( ) was born n Gravenhurst, Ontaro. Bethune was a medcal student at the Unversty of Toronto n 1914 when WW began and he went to France as a stretcher bearer n1915. Resumng hs studes after a shrapnel shell blast wounded hs left leg, Bethune graduated wth an MB from the Unversty of Toronto n n 1917, Bethune returned to Europe as a surgeon sub-leutenant n the Royal Naval Canadan Volunteer Reserve and later the Royal Navy. n the years after the war, Bethune completed post-graduate studes at West London Hosptal and at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ednburgh. Bethune s grandfather (who was also called Norman) was the founder of Toronto s thrd medcal school, the Upper Canada School of Medcne, and was a major nfluence on Bethune as he started out n medcne. n 1926, Bethune entered a dark perod of hs lfe dagnosed wth tuberculoss (TB) and estranged from hs wfe Frances Penney. t was hs recovery from TB that nspred hs nterest n thoracc medcne. After hs convalescence at the Trudeau Sanatorum n Saranac Lake, New York, he moved to Montreal and began workng as an assstant to Dr. Edward Archbald of the Royal Vctora Hosptal a leadng authorty on tuberculoss. Over the next few years, Bethune became famous for hs treatment of TB patents at both the Royal Vctora Hosptal and the Hôptal du Sacré-Coeur. From , Bethune perfected hs sklls n thoracc surgery, and also nvented and redesgned more than a dozen surgcal nstruments ncludng rb shears and a pneumothorax devce. ncreasngly dsllusoned wth the general state of medcal practce, Bethune advocated for change n the health care system. n 1936, he volunteered to help the Loyalsts n the Spansh Cvl War, where he organzed the frst moble blood-transfuson unt. Two years later, Bethune traveled to Chna where he provded ad to the Chnese communst Red Army by formng the frst moble medcal unt. n 1939, whle statoned wth the Communst Party of Chna s Eghth Route Army durng the Second Sno-Japanese War, Bethune njured hs fnger whle operatng on a solder and ded of blood posonng.
